BRONZE MEDAL SAVES BADMINTON FROM EMBARRASSMENT IN TOKYO

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 – Malaysia celebrated their first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and it came from badminton when Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik came from a game down to defeat Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan-Mohammad Ahsan 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 for the bronze medal in the men’s doubles.
While the bronze medal achieved in a 52-minute encounter did not come easy, it certainly saved Malaysian badminton the blushes from returning home without a medal after an all-time high of three silver medals in the Rio Olympics five years ago.
Malaysia won the silver medal in Rio in the men’s singles (Datuk Lee Chong Wei), Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles) and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the mixed doubles.
If we are to take the bronze medal effort by Aaron-Wooi Yik in account, it simply means that Malaysian badminton is on a slide.
Malaysian badminton is losing its grip in the shuttle sport while other nations have improved by leaps and bounds.
The tears shed by Aaron and Wooi Yik after the bronze medal spoke of their feelings they endured in Tokyo. They were hailed as gold medal prospects after their stunning 21-14, 21-17 over Indonesia’s top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
However, failed to ride on their momentum in the semi-finals and lost 22-24, 13-21 to China’s former world champions Li Jun Hui-Liu Yu Chen.
The bronze medal playoff was a tremendous effort by the Malaysians who had lost 16-21, 19-21 to Hendra Setiawan-Mohammad Ahsan in a Group D match.
It could be tears of joy or tears of frustration. Joy for winning the bronze medal and frustration for not being able to make the final.
It was a case of so near yet so far – that summed up their topsy turvy run in Tokyo. Still the bronze medal counts in many ways for the game and the nation.
Kudos to the pair for saving Malaysian badminton from embarrassment in Tokyo. Badminton was a gold medal target after Lee Zii Jia won this year’s All-England in March.
Much hope was pinned on the 23-year-old Kedah-born Zii Jia but he failed to make the quarter-finals following a 8-21, 21-19, 21-5 defeat to reigning Olympic champion Chen Long of China.

BADMINTON GOLD REMAINS A DREAM FOR MALAYSIA AS AARON-WOOI YIK EXIT

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 – The elusive Olympics gold remains a distant dream for Malaysian badminton when top men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik fell in the semifinals – straight games 24-22, 21-13 to China’s former world champions Li Jun Hui-Liu Yu Chen.
It was a heartbreak defeat for the Malaysians who had stunned world No 1 and hot favorites Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the quarterfinals with a 21-14, 21-17 win – their first ever over the Indonesians in seven meetings.
Hopes of  Aaron-Wooi Yik winning the gold soared after the impressive victory over the Indonesian top seeds but it turned out to be a false alarm. Against the Chinese the Malaysians were lost in a match held at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.
One wonders if the win over Gideon and Sukamuljo had made them over confident?
The best Aaron-Wooi Yik can bring home is a bronze but for that they have to clear another Indonesian hurdle – second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan.
The veteran Indonesian pair will take a psychological advantage of beating the Malaysians 21-16, 21-18 in the group match.
Ahsan-Setiawan were also a pale shadow in their semifinals match against the unseeded pair of Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei who crushed their Indonesian opponents with a 21-11, 21-10 win. Their current form makes them the favorites for the gold medal.
Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin also defeated the Indonesian pair at the BWF World Tour finals in Bangkok last year 21-17, 23-21 in the final.
At the Rio Olympics five years ago Malaysian won the silver in the men’s doubles through Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.

LEE HUP WEI LEFT IN TEARS AFTER FLOPPING IN THE QUALIFYING ROUND

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 – The Tokyo Olympic Stadium will be remembered by Malaysian high jumper Lee Hup Wei for the tears he shed after failing to clear 2.17m in the qualifying round when the athletics program got underway in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday.
The Kajang-born athlete was bubbling with confidence when he won the ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and even predicted that making the high jump finals is within his reach.
However the 34-year-old was lost for words and could only shake his head in utter disappointment when he was in the mixed zone where the media was waiting for him for an interview.
Hup Wei was overwhelmed with emotions – probably asking himself what went wrong on his three failed attempts to clear 2.17m set as the qualifying mark. For the record the Malaysian has a personal best of 2.29m.
Only 12 high jumpers qualified for the finals from a field of 33 from around the world .
This is Hup Wei’s third Olympics. His first was the Beijing Olympics (2008) and four years later at the London Olympics in 2012.
At the Rio Olympics five years ago, Malaysia was represented by Nauraj Singh Randhawa. Nauraj is now settled down in Germany and failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
Earlier, wild card entry Azreen Nabila Alias clocked a personal best of 11.76s in the women’s 100m qualifying round – beating her previous best of 11.92s. The Terengganu-born Azreen came second in Heat Two which was won by Iran’s Farzaneh Fasihi.
The top three in each heat qualified for the first round.

IT’S A LONG JOURNEY FOR ME – ZII JIA

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 – Reigning All-England champion Lee Zii Jia suffered a painful three-game 8-21, 21-19, 21-5 defeat to reigning Olympic champion Chen Long of China in Round of 16 match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Thursday.
It is a defeat that showed experience cannot be bought but at 23 age is on his side. There was no stopping the veteran Chinese ace, a two-time world champion, once he found his rhythm in the 70 minute encounter at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.
The 33-year-old Chen Long defeated former Malaysian legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei  21-18, 21-18 in the gold medal match in Rio four years ago.
The former world No 1 also won the silver at the Beijing Olympics (2008) and London Olympics (2012). Chong Wei has since retired from competitive badminton due to ill-health.
”After winning the All-England many hailed me as a medal prospect at the Tokyo Olympics. The fact is that I have a long way to go in my badminton career,” said the Alor Setar-born Zii Jia who is also the SEA Games champion.
“It’s a long journey and I will use the experience gained in my first Olympics to further improve my game and take it to a higher level.”
“The pressure of playing in the Olympics is totally different. It’s a mega event where only the best make it. It’s an unforgettable experience and to have qualified to the knockout stage is an achievement for me.
”For me, I am more confident in my game. The match against Chen Long, however, did not go my way after I won the first game. In the second game I gave away easy points and by the time I fought back it was too late.”
Depending on the coronavirus pandemic, Zii Jia is hoping to play in some of the big tournaments this year.

JDT HAND SELANGOR ANOTHER BEATING, MELAKA UPSET TERENGGANU

0
PETALING JAYA, July 29 – Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) tightened their grip at the top with a 3-1 win over Selangor FC at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Wednesday on a night when second-placed Terengganu was embarrassed 2-0 by Melaka United at the Hang Jebat Sadium.
The defeat of the Turtles came in the wake of their 5-0 win over Perak FC at home over the weekend. The East Coast hopefuls remained second in the league with 30 points from 15 matches – six ahead of third placed Kedah on 26 points with two games in hand.
The Southern Tigers topped the league standings with 36 points and their convincing win over Selangor are strong signals that the league title is within grasp for a record eighth successive season.
Brazilian hitman Bergson da Silva hammered his 13th goal for the Southern Tigers – one behind Selangor’s Nigerian striker Ifedayo Olusegun who scored his team’s consolation goal on Wednesday.
Bergson struck in added time before the halftime break and Olusegun scored for the Red Giants on 62 minutes. JDT, however, was never in danger of losing points when international Matthew Davies added the second in the 79th minute.
Naturalised Malaysian international Mohamadou Sumareh hammered the final nail into the Selangor coffin when he found the net for JDT’s third goal deep into injury.
Melaka United scored a goal in each half through Haitian striker Sony Norde and new Brazilian signing Adriano Narcizo in the 36th and 77th minutes respectively for the shock win over Terengganu.
At the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, two goals in injury time saw Sabah FC share points with Sri Pahang.
Sabah’s Croatian striker Josip Ivancic scored a brace for with his second coming just before the final whistle after Pahang looked like taking all three points when Abdul Malik scored in the 93rd minute.
Ivancic had opened scoring for Sabah after 58 minutes but Pahang wiped out the deficit through Baqiuddin Shamsudin 10 minutes. Added time provided all the drama with two late goals and share of points.
Penang is fourth in the league standings with 25 points from 14 matches after a 1-0 win over UiTM FC at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam. Sheriddin Boboev got Penang’s winner in the 81st minute.

JDT ROAR TO A 3-1 WIN OVER UiTM FC

0
JOHOR BAHRU, July 25 – Seven-time Malaysian Super League champions, Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) woke up in the second-half for a convincing 3-1 win over bottom placed UiTM FC in a second round match played at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru on Sunday.
The Johor outfit tightened their grip at the top with 33 points after 14 matches. Terengganu FC, after their 5-0 win over Perak FC at home on Saturday is second on 30 points.
However, it was 42nd minute jolt that the Southern Tigers woke up from their slumber after UiTM FC took the lead against the run of play with new Brazilian signing Joel Vinicus found the net when he slotted home into an empty net off an assist from another new addition Kwon Yong-hyun of South Korea.
Once the Southern Tigers got into rhythm after the time break there was no stopping Benjamin Mora’s team.
Gonzalo Cabrera struck on 50 minutes for the equaliser to swing the tide in his team’s favor and JDT struck again in the 72nd minute with international Safawi Rasid on target.
Brazilian hitman, who had a poor outing in the recent AFC Champions League in Bangkok, scored his 12th goal in the league in the 88th minute.
At the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan, Sri Pahang scored in the first minute through new signing Manuel Hidalgo against Melaka United. The 22-year-old Argentine has breathed new life into the Elephants but Pahang failed to capitalize on the early lead.
Melaka, however, broke the hearts of Sri Pahang when 30-year-old Wan Zaharulnizam netted deep into seven minutes of added time.
With the stalemate Pahang remained in ninth place and Melaka United a rung below on 13 and 12 points respectively.

GOAL FEAST IN TERENGGANU

0
PETALING JAYA, July 24 – Terengganu FC rode on two penalties and an own goal as the Turtles resumed their Super League campaign with a 5-0 whitewash of a new-look Perak FC in a second-round match played at the Sultan Zainal Mizan Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu on Saturday.
It was a nightmare for Perak’s former national goalkeeper Hafizul Hakim and coach Chong Yee Fatt as Terengganu roared to the big win and kept pace at the top with seven-time Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim who will play UiTM FC in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru, tonight.
Perak underwent a massive revamp after several of their big names left the team during the second transfer window in May due to salary issues. Among those who have moved are Shahrul Saad, J. Parthiban, Guilherme de Paula, Shakir Hamzah and Kenny Pallraj.
Terengganu raced to a 3–0 lead before the half-time break with goals by Faisal Halim (19th minute), David Da Silva (20th, penalty) and an own-goal by Perak defender Charles Machell (42nd).
Hakimi Abdullah made it 4-0 after 71 minutes before Nik Arif Syahiran converted another spot deep into injury time. The Turtles have 30 points from 14 matches while JDT remained on top on goal difference with a game in hand.
At the KLFA Stadium in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur City shared the spoils with Selangor FC in the Battle of the Valley. KL City led 1-0 after 40 minutes with their Brazilian skipper netting his eighth goal. However, the Red Giants made it all square in the 43rd minute through Oliver Buff.
Petaling Jaya City snatched a late goal for a 1-0 win over Sabah FC at the Petaling Jaya Stadium. Sunil Chandran netted just before the final whistle for full points.

DREAM LIVES ON FOR PENG SOON-LIU YING IN TOKYO

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 – Rio Olympics mixed doubles silver medal winners Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying failed to clear their first hurdle at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with three-game defeat to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet 18-21, 21-10, 21-16.
It was a roller-coaster ride for the Malaysian professionals who won silver in Rio in 2016 after a 14-21, 16-21 defeat to Indonesians Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir in the gold medal match.
Liu Ying, who was one of the two Malaysian flag bearer at the opening ceremony in Tokyo, and Peng Soon, their dream of winning a medal in the land of the rising sun, however, will have to shed their self-made mistakes to keep their hopes alive in Group D.
They must beat Germans Mark Lamfuss-Isabel Herttrich on Sunday and group favorites and World No 2 Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China on Monday. Only the top two in the group will advance to the knockout stage.
”We gave away soft points through our mistakes. This cost us dearly,” said Peng Soon on the defeat to the Hong Kong pair who have a 6-1 lead over the Malaysian opponents.
It was also a defeat for Malaysia in the women’s doubles when Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean crashed to a 21-14, 21-17 defeat to Indonesians Greysia Polii-Rahayu Apriyani – a defeat that has seriously dented their quarter-finals hopes from Group A.
The Malaysian number one pair, ranked 11, next play top seeds and current world No 1 Sayaka Hirota- Yuki Fukushima before facing Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith of Great Britain.
There was some cheer in the Malaysian camp when top men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik registered a straight game win over World No 7 Choi Solgyu-Seo Seungjae of South Korea.
The number nine ranked Malaysians, however, had a tough first game in their 24-22, 21-15 win over the Koreans. The reigning Sea Games champions, need extra spark in their game to overcome second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in their next match.

SARAWAK UNITED IS COMING HOME

0
PETALING JAYA, July 22 – With the state government coming to the rescue to settle salary arrears for players and officials – Premier League leaders Sarawak United are all fired up for their ”home coming” this Sunday’s match against Perak 2 at the State Stadium in Kuching.
It is the first home match for the Golden Hornbills this year and head coach E. Elavarasan and Sarawak United technical director B. Satiananthan, are “delighted and excited” with that.
Sarawak United is returning home after having made the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka as their temporary home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The match against Perak 2 would not have come at a better time for Sarawak United, who are still reeling from the shared points with Selangor 2 at the Manjung Stadium in Perak last Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Referee Mohamad Faizzuddin Ismail made a mess of the outcome when he awarded Selangor 2 a penalty for hands when the ball is clearly seen hitting Sarawak defender Zahril Azri Zabri’s face in the 50th minutes after Uche Agba had given the Sarawak outfit the lead in added time before the interval.
Selangor’s Ghanaian import George Attram scored the equaliser in the late afternoon match which was postponed from April 7 due to bad weather at the Selayang Stadium.
Elavarasan, is still seething with the poor decision by the match official, but hopes the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will take note of the incident.
The title chase could develop into a two-horse race between the Golden Hornbills and second-placed Negeri Sembilan, who are on 24 and 22 points respectively.
The focus is now on the match against Perak FC – a match that has developed into ”high profile”.
A win for the Golden Hornbills will be a perfect present from the team to the people of Sarawak who celebrated Independence Day on Thursday (22nd July 2021).
Sarawak United has a big fan base, not only in the state but also in the peninsula.
”The players are in the right mood and fully focused. We thank the state government for settling the salary arrears and it has given the team a big morale boost,” said Elavarasan who in the same breath, praised his players for their patience in coping with off the field woes.
Satiananthan, whose work has also been hampered by the pandemic and lack of funds, hopes it will be the beginning of new things to come. The former national coach was also a victim of salary arrears.
“Thanks to the state government, we hope to see light at the end of the tunnel in our bid to develop the game in Sarawak. The state government’s needs to be lauded for its efforts but those in the FA set up also need to play their part.
“There is only so much the (state) government can do. Hope the president and his team  can bring more sponsors and funds for the team and development of Sarawak football,” said Satiananthan a former national coach who is also the president of the Football Coaches Association of Malaysia.
The president of Sarawak United FC is Dato Posa Majais, who was recently elected as one of FAM’s vice-presidents.

0
Reezal Merican
