PETAING JAYA, Aug 16 – East Malaysian Premier League hopefuls Sarawak United roared to the top of the league standings after a 4-1 win over Perak FC II on Sunday.
Head coach E. Elavarasan, however, was quick to fire an early warning that “consistency” will be the key to the title which comes with a promotion to the elite Super League.
“It is a good win…a win which will serve as a morale booster for the team. The journey is for us to complete and we cannot let any skids along the way,” said Elavarasan, who admires the way the players have kept their professionalism despite some hiccups here and there.
“Consistency is a key factor and the players have shown that. They have also shown character to fightback when the odds are against them. Hopefully, we can maintain the consistency in the coming matches.”
The Golden Hornbills conceded an early goal to Perak FC II at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on Sunday when Royizzat Daud whipped in an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Sharbinee Alwee in the fifth minute.
Sarawak United did not allow that early setback get the better of them. Instead, the Golden Hornbills pushed up a gear and were on level terms after 35 minutes with international Norshahrul Idlan Talaha making it 1-1 with a clinical finish.
Perak FC II were under pressure after the break and buckled when midfielder Syafiq Khairul Mustaffa netted an own goal in the 53rd minute to put Sarawak United 2-1 ahead. It was just what Sarawak United needed to pile up the pressure.
Nigerian hitman Uche Agba made it 3-1 for Sarawak United in the 67th minute with his 12th goal league goal before Abdul Rahim Razak (88th) hammered in the fourth. It is Rahim’s fourth goal for the team in the league.
