JDT FAIL TO ADVANCE IN AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 5 July – Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) kissed goodbye to their hopes in the AFC Champions League when they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Japanese club Nagoya Grampus at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Sunday.
The Southern Tigers needed to win the match against Nagoya to stay in the hunt from Group G.
However, the Johor outfit fell behind as early as the fourth minute when Adam Nor Azlin fell Mateus Castro in the box.
For the record, JDT conceded three penalties in their 4-1 defeat to Pohang Steelers of Korea in their last match.
Mateus picked himself up and gave goalkeeper Haziq Nazli, playing his first match in the competition, no chance at all from his spot-kick.
It was a bad start for Benjamin Mora and his team who played without Shane Lowry, Afiq Fazail, Aiman Arif Hanapi and Matthew Davies because of suspension.
Nagoya looked like running away with an easy win when Hiroyuki Abe made it 2-0 on 28 minutes. Abe curled in a beautiful left footer into the right corner of the net after getting the better of his marker Corbin Ong.
However, the Southern Tigers were tightened their game after this and fought back into the picture with some neat buildups and off one of their forays upfront managed to reduce the deficit in the 42nd minute.
Corbin Ong’s long range attempt was parried away by Nagoya goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak into the path of Ramadhan Saifullah, who gleefully guided the ball back into the net. It was the first goal conceded by Nagoya in five matches.
With the win, Nagoya maintained their place at the top with 15 points after winning all five matches.
Pohang Steelers is second with 10 points from the same number of matches followed by JDT in third spot with three points and Thailand’s Ratchaburi FC fourth with one point.
JDT will face Ratchaburi in their final match in the group on Wednesday.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 – Former Honorary Secretary, Kamaruzaman Kedah is back in the fold with Tennis Association of Malaysia ( Tennis Malaysia) after incumbent Datuk Sayed Alfeizal Sayed Ahmad resigned from the post recently due to his busy and hectic business commitments. Sayed Alfeizal was on the job for only six months.

Kamaruzaman, who quit earlier due to personal and family commitments has been recalled by Tennis Malaysia President, Mirzan Tun Mahathir and the former has agreed to make a comeback.
Tennis Malaysia will also have a new honorary treasurer and he is Hang Kok Long from Penang.
Kok Long who is also an Exco member of the national tennis body, was unanimously elected to the post vacated by Nor Asri Mohd Norman after he accepted the nomination via a Zoom meeting. Nor Asri who held the post for two years, quit due to personal commitments as his reasons.
According to Johnson Koh, a vice-president of Tennis Malaysia, the appointment of the honorary secretary is the prerogative Tennis Malaysia President, Mirzan Tun Mahathir.
”The president recalled Kamaruzaman due to his vast experience in the job and is the right person to carry out the objectives of the national association,” said Johnson Koh who is also the President of Sabah Tennis.
Ón his return to Tennis Malaysia, Kamaruzaman said:  “I am happy to be part of the national association again and continue with the objectives and the work that needs to be done.
”I am looking forward to working with the state associations to develop grass root tennis. We need their cooperation to make the national association tick and work well on the matter.”
Meanwhile Kok Long said his job as treasurer will be a heavy responsibilities.
”I will do my best to guard the finances of Tennis Malaysia and continue the good work already laid out by my predecessor.”

JDT’S MISERABLE RUN IN AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CONTINUES

0
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 – Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) was hit again at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok – suffering a 2-0 defeat to Pohang Steelers in a second-round Group G match on the AFC Champions League on Thursday.
The defeat to the Korean club came in the wake of a 4-1 thrashing in a first-round match at the same venue on Monday.
It was a pathetic show by the Southern Tigers who were expected to be front runners in the AFC Champions League this year after pulling out of the competition last year due to the covid pandemic.
The back-to-back second defeat to Pohang Steelers has not only put a dent in the Malaysian football kingpins but has also seriously affected their hopes of advancing to the last 16.
JDT has two more matches to go in the second round – against Nagoya Grampus (Japan) and Ratchaburi FC of Thailand.
International Safawi Rasid, whose form has taken a dip of late, struck the left upright after 16 minutes from a freekick from outside the box. That was about the only spark from JDT as they fizzled out as the match progressed.
Pohang Steelers could have scored a bigger win but were stopped by some poor finishing or by JDT goalkeeper Farizal Marlias. Still, he could not stop Pohang Steelers from a win with Lee Seung-mo (33rd) and Kang Sang-woo (37th) scoring the two goals.

CHENG HOE LEAVES FOR HOME AFTER QUARANTINE

0
KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 – After being holed up in a hotel to serve a two-week quarantine after returning from Dubai on June 17,  national football head coach, Tan Cheng Hoe is back home with his family in Penang on Tuesday.
It was an emotional day for Cheng Hoe, as he will finally get to pay his respects to his late father Tan Chooi Siak who passed away due to old age in his hometown Alor Setar when he was on national duty with Harimau Malaya for the World Cup 2022/Asia Cup 2023 qualifiers in Group G.
The 95-year-old Chooi Siak died on June 11, the day Malaysia played Vietnam and was cremated on June 15, the day Malaysia took on Thailand. Cheng Hoe decided to stay with the team in Dubai with the blessings of his family.
From Penang, Cheng Hoe will travel to Alor Setar with his immediate members and will be in time for his father’s prayers. His physical presence for the prayers will allow him to mourn with his loved ones.
Cheng Hoe and the family have been vegetarians since his father’s passing.
”It is an emotional day for me to return home. Frankly, I have yet to come to terms with the loss of my beloved father,” said Cheng Hoe from the Subang Airport while waiting for his flight.
”To mourn with my beloved family members will give me solace and make up my absence during the passing of my father. I still feel the void left by my father’s death and it will never be filled. He was an inspiration to me.”
The two-week quarantine in Petaling Jaya was an experience itself – all alone in the room where he passed his time by listening to music. He also watched the live telecast of the Euro 2020 matches, apart from speaking to his family via video calls.
Putting his personal tragedy aside, Cheng Hoe did a remarkable job in Dubai to guide Malaysia to the Asia Cup third round after defeating Thailand 1-0 in the final second-round match in Dubai.
Malaysia finished third in the group with 12 points from eight matches. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) took the top spot on 18 points. Vietnam finished second with 17 points and Thailand ended up in the fourth spot with nine points. Indonesia was at the bottom with only one point.

JDT BURIED IN AN AVALANCHE OF PENALTIES

0
KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 – It rained at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok that left the pitch soggy but the story of the night belonged to South Korean club Pohang Steelers who scored from three penalties for a massive 4-1 win in a Group G match of the AFC Champions League on Monday night.
The defeat was a painful one for the Southern Tigers, Malaysia’s lone flag bearer in the AFC Champions League.
JDT ended the first-round matches with only one win and will play Pohang Steelers in the return match at the same venue on Thursday.
It was another miserable night for JDT’s Brazilian hitman Bergson Da Silva, who once again muffed chances.
Argentine striker Leandro Velazquez gave JDT a 17th-minute lead when his attempt deflected off a Pohang defender and rolled into the net to give JDT a 1-0 lead.
However, JDT failed to ride on the momentum and 10 minutes later Velazquez went zero when he gave away a penalty.
Velazquez fouled Goh Young-Joon and Ukraine striker Boris Tashchy made no mistake from the spot to put Pohang back into the picture.
It was just what the Korean club needed and went into the break with a 2-1 lead after Mauricio conceded another penalty after 35 minutes. Skipper Kang Sang Woo converted a twice-taken penalty.
JDT was still very much into the game in the second half but conceded two late goals and it was game over.
Pohang scored through Kwon Gi-Pyo (82nd) and Im San-yeob, who hit home from another penalty in the first minute of added time for a 4-1 win to make up for their 3-0 defeat to group leaders Nagoya Grampus.
It was also a night when five JDT players – Matthew Davies, Afiq Fazail, Shane Lowry, Azril Nasrulhaq Badrul Hisham and Mauricio – picked up bookings.
“This is a great result from an important match after the defeat to Nagoya,” said Pohang head coach Kim Gi-Dong said after the match.
His counterpart Benjamin Mora had this to say: “We had the chances to score but we didn’t. The most important point is the effort of the players…they continued fighting.”

DIFFICULT DIVE BUT JUN HOONG QUALIFIES ON MERIT FOR TOKYO OLYMPICS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 – The degree of difficulty got more and more difficult but the figures favored Malaysia’s former world champion, Cheong Jun Hoong who has earned her ticket to the Tokyo Olympics on merit.
The 31-year-old Ipoh-born who underwent a week of uncertainty, will be on the plane to Tokyo after FINA – the world aquatics governing body changed the figure – 18 qualifying to the Olympic instead of the earlier 15.
FINA and the International Olympic Council (IOC) reversed the earlier decision following an appeal filed by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
Jun Hoong who won the silver with Pandelela Rinong in the 10m synchronized platform at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will be the fifth Malaysian diver competing at the mega event in Tokyo from July 23-Aug 8.
The others are Pandelela (10m platform individual and 10m platform synchronized); Nur Dhabitah Sabri (3m springboard individual); Wendy Ng Yan Yee (3m springboard individual) and Leong Mun Yee (10m platform synchronized).
Coached by Yang Zhuliang, Jun Hoong has a rich history in Malaysian swimming and won the gold medal (10m platform) at the World Championships in Budapest in 2017.
She also won the bronze at the same meet with Pandelela in the 10m platform synchronized.
Jun Hoong was Malaysia’s flag bearer at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.
OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria was delighted with the latest developments, thanked FINA and IOC for the decision, and said it is a big boost for Malaysian divers who are expected to be on the podium.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican had this to say to Jun Hoong: “Work hard and do your best in Tokyo.”

JDT BACK ON TRACK IN AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

0
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 – Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) ruled but in the end could only manage a 1-0 win over Thai club Ratchaburi FC at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Friday.
It was a much-needed win and the three points for the Johor club after their 1-0 defeat to Nagoya Grampus at the same venue on Tuesday.
The Southern Tigers moved into the second spot in Group G with three points while Nagoya leads with six points after defeating Pohang Steelers 3-0.
JDT was the dominating side against Ratchaburi but simply could bury their opponents from the opportunities that came their way or created on a night when much-acclaimed Brazilian hitman Bergson Da Silva could not tuck the ball into the net.

The new signing even missed a penalty after 28 minutes when his spot-kick was well-read and well saved by Ratchaburi goalkeeper Kampol Pathom-Attakul.
Earlier Bergson muffed several chances including hitting the bar in the 19th minute.
Former international Safiq Rahim started the match and had a good game, adding bite to the JDT engine room.
Safiq too had chances but Kampol was in top form until he was finally beaten in the 47th minute.
Safiq set up Leandro Velazquez and the Argentine scored with his left-footer that left Kampol rooted as the ball sailed into the right corner of his net. Safiq had done enough on the pitch until he was replaced on 73 minutes.
Young Arif Aiman Hanapi showed maturity in his game. The 19-year-old, playing in his first AFC Champions League, was a thorn in the Thai side with his good reading of the game and penetrating runs although he was booked in the 65t minute. Arif was substituted after 73 minutes.
JDT stayed away from the tournament last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the Malaysian Super League champions aim to make the knockout stage this time.
Their next match is a real test when they play Pohang Steelers.

ALL PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHES POSTPONED

0
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 – With the daily Covid-19 positive cases hovering around more than 4,000 cases per day, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) has decided to postpone the Premier League matches indefinitely on the instructions of the Youth and Sports Ministry.
MFL chief executive officer Dato’ Ab Ghani Hassan, in a circular to the M-League teams said the new fixtures will be announced at a later date.
Also postponed to a later date are the two postponed first-round matches – Perak 2 versus Kelantan FC and the Selangor 2 versus Sarawak United – which was rescheduled for June 29 and June 30 respectively.
The M-League took a break in mid-May for the national team to compete in an international tournament – the World Cup 2022/Asia Cup 2023 qualifiers in Group G (second-round matches in Dubai) with 13 matches completed in the Super League and the Premier League.
In an earlier release, the Premier League matches were scheduled to begin on July 3 and the Super League was scheduled to resume on July 24.
The national players are still undergoing quarantine in a hotel in Petaling Jaya on their return from Dubai while those from JDT are playing in the AFC Champions League in Bangkok.
”MFL will keep the teams informed on the new fixtures but much will depend on the announcements and green light for clearance by the National Security Council (NSC) on the pandemic situation in the country,” said Ab Ghani.
Meanwhile, according to Ab Ghani, the teams are allowed to continue with Quarantine Camp-based Training) and training matches are allowed under strict SOPs behind closed doors.
Sarawak United FC had officially requested their postponed first-round match against Selangor 2 (June 30) to be played at a later date.
The match at the Selayang Stadium on April 7 was postponed because of bad weather.
Head coach E. Elavarasan said with the latest developments his team will have a longer time to train.
Sarawak United’s national player Norshahrul Idlan Talaha is still under quarantine after returning from Dubai on April 17.
Sarawak United is currently perched on the top of the league with 23 points from 10 matches and has a match in hand over second-placed Negeri Sembilan on 22 points.
Elavarasan is aware that it ”will be much tougher” in the coming matches as many teams have beefed up their squad during the recent second transfer window.
