PETALING JAYA, May 6 – The Premier League opening second-round match between Sarawak United and Kelantan United has been moved to neighboring Terengganu, and it will be played at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Friday.
Sarawak United, serious contenders for the Premier League title this year with Negeri Sembilan, welcomed the neutral venue. Due to the fasting month, the match will be played at 10 pm.
According to Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan, the change of venue is because the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bharu has not been approved by the Malaysian Football League due to poor lighting.
The Golden Hornbills, as the East Malaysian outfit is called, goes into the match against Kelantan United, lying in second place in the 12-team league with 20 points – one point behind leaders Negeri Sembilan who have played a match more.
Kelantan United is in fourth place with 16 points from 10 matches – separated by goal difference from third-placed Terengganu 2.
On the same day, Negeri Sembilan plays JDT II at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Baharu. JDT II is the feeder squad of seven-time Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim. Some of the first team players feature for JDT II on and off for match time.
Elavarasan wants his team to keep the winning momentum after the hard-fought 1-0 win over JDT II and go into the second round campaign on a winning note.
International Norshahrul Idlan Talaha scored the winner for the Golden Hornbills.
“Once again, I will decide on the team hours before the match. Some players will be given a late fitness test due to injuries,” said Elavarasan on his arrival with the team on Thursday.
