ZII JIA IN YONEX SWISS OPEN SEMI-FINALS

KUALA LUMPUR, Mc 5 – Mixed doubles top seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying are out of the Yonex Swiss Open after a shock defeat in the quarter-finals to Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje in three games 14-21, 21-19, 21-15 on Friday.
Also biting the dust in Basel were fellow professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie who also went out in similar fashion – losing in three games after winning the first 21-14 but lost the next two 21-14, 21-19 in an hour-long match against Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France.
However, fifth-seeded Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing lifted the gloom to advance to the semi-finals after knocking out India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa 21-17, 16-21, 21-18 in a 70-minute thriller.
Kian Meng-Pei Jing will (pic below) get the chance to exact revenge on Thom-Delphine when they meet each other in Saturday’s semi-finals in the Super 300 event that offers USD140,000 in prize money in the Olympics qualifier.
In the men’s singles Malaysian No 1 Lee Zii Jia, seeded second, stayed on course when he gunned down India’s B. Sai Praneeth. The Malaysian defeated the fifth-seeded Praneeth 21-14, 21-17 in 45 minutes.
For a place in Sunday’s final Zii Jia will next meet Thailand’s three-time world junior champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn who ousted another India Ajay Jayaram 21-9, 21-6.
