JDT SERVE A STUNNER AGAINST ULSAN HYUNDAI IN AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

0
JOHOR BAHRU, Apr 19 – Johor Darul Takzim roared to a 2-1 win over South Korean giants Ulsan Hyundai to remain unbeaten in Group I in the AFC Champions League match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puetri, Johor Bahru on Monday.
The eight-time Malaysian Super League champions fell short in many disciplines but fought tooth and nail against the 2020 ACL champions to register a morale boosting win in the first round. In the first match the Malaysian flag bearers whipped Guangzhou FC 5-0.
“It was not an easy win but we did what we needed to do against Ulsan. Self-confidence nd self-belief played a part in our win. I am proud of my players for their guts and determination to plug the gaps and win the match,” said JDT’s long-serving Mexican coach Benjamin Mora on the victory.
His counterpart Hong Myungbo blamed ”defensive lapses” on is team’s defeat.
Once again Bergson Da Silva was too hot to handle and he struck the winner 10 minutes before regulation time – firing home a left footed drive into the keeper’s right corner.
JDT got off to a perfect start – taking the lead as early as the third minute while the Korean were still settling into the game.
New signing Fernando Forestieri left Ulsan in the forest when he fired home an unstoppable right footer past goalkeeper Jo Hyeonwoo rooted with the out of the blue strike. On the bench Ulsan coach was left dazed. The blank look on his face summed it up all.
Hyeongwoo was beaten again in the 79th minute. This time Bergson, with his adrenalin flowing after a hattrick against Guangzhou, struck and the rest is history as JDT is making its presence felt at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.
Earlier, Um Wonsang netted the equalizer for Ulsan in the 52nd minute off an assist from substitute Seol Youngwoo. It, however, failed to rattle the Southern Tigers who grew in confidence as Ulsan threw everything at them with the hope of at least salvaging a draw.
The match also saw JDT lose goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli midway in the second-half through a shoulder injury and was replaced by Izham Tarmizi. JDT has already lost first choice and national No 1 Farizal Marlias through head injury sustained in a Malaysian Super League match.
Putting that aside, JDT, with two wins in the bag, next play Japanese club Kawasaki Frontale who romped to a 8-0 whitewash of Guangzhou in earlier match played at the Larkin Stadium.
JDT leads the group with six points with Kawasaki second on four points. Ulsan is third with one point. Guangzhou is at the bottom without a point after two defeats.

HIGH FIVE FROM JDT FOR A ROARING START IN AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

0
PETALING JAYA, Apr 16 – Guangzhou FC were hammered by Malaysian hopefuls Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) in their opening AFC Champions League match in Group I at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru on Friday night.
It was Friday Blessings for the Southern Tigers for their best ever start in the Champions League and the bright start to the campaign this year augurs well for the eight-time Malaysian Super League champions.
And it turned out to be a night to remember for their Brazilian ace Bergson da Silva who fired a hat-trick against the young Chinese side that was reduced in numbers on 70 minutes when defender Guan Haojin was sent off for an early shower for a blatant tackle on the Brazilian.
Putting that aside, Bergson opened the floodgates as early as the 10th minute when the Brazilian sent a delightful header into the Chinese net off an assist by Shane Lowry.
It was the beginning of a nightmare for Guangzhou goalkeeper He Lipan who gifted JDT their second goal when he fumbled Fernando Forestieri’s attempt, allowing the high ball slip through his hands and roll into the net on 13 minutes.
The marauding Bergson got his second on the night in the 27th minute and completed his grand hat-trick seven minutes into the second half.
In the 81st minute Ramadhan Saifullah got his name into the scoresheet for his team’s fifth goal on the night from an assist by Nazmi Faiz Mansor – that left club owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Crown Prince of Johor, all smiles.
New national coach Kim Pan-gon and his assistant E. Elavarasan were at the match that must have pleased the South Korean as he looks out for new talent in the national squad.
In another match in the same group played at the Larkin Stadium, Korean club Ulsan Hyundai and Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw.
JDT’s next match is on Monday and will play Ulsan Hyundai.

FANDI SIBLINGS SHOULD CREATE THEIR OWN LEGACY SAYS JITA

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 13 – Father Fandi Ahmad needs no introduction for his football exploits – Singapore’s best known football ambassador who was not only a household name in this region but also carved out a name for himself in Europe.
The legendary Fandi – son of former Singapore national goalkeeper Ahmad Wartam – donned national colors 101 times and plundered 55 goals from 1979 to 1997 and left a legacy in the republic’s football world.
In Europe, Fandi was a hit with Dutch club FC Groningen and Greek side OFI Crete. He also played for Niac Mitra in the Indonesian League and in Malaysia turned out for Kuala Lumpur, Pahang. In Singapore he played for Geylang and Singapore Armed Forces.
On March 26 Fandi’s name again vibrated at the National Stadium and the famous “Kallang Roar” roared again – this time it was Fandi’s three sons – Irfan, Ikhsan and Ilhan – who wrote a new chapter in Singapore football history. It was the first time the three brothers donned national colors for Singapore in an international match.
Twenty-two-year old Ikhsan rekindled the “Fandimania” with a double strike in Singapore’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over Malaysia in a Tri-Nation match as the siblings  warmed the hearts of the home fans. The famous Kallang Roar was heard loud and clear. His double against Malaysia took his international tally to 13 goals (26 caps).
For the record, Ikhsan – described as a “genuine No 9” – plays for BG Pathum in the Thai League.
Jita Singh

Former Singapore national coach Jita Singh – who gave Fandi the big break as a striker following the retirement of Arshad Khamis and Dollah Kassim in 1979 – is more than pleased with the way the Fandi siblings have broken into the limelight.

Jita, however, has advised the Fandi siblings not to ride on their father’s legacy. Instead, they should “ride on their own strength” and create their own legacy.
“Each of them have their own strengths and weakness. You need ‘group dynamics’ to thrive in football and the Fandi siblings should work on their strengths to build their reputation.
“They should get out of the shell and create their own legacy based on their strengths and build their reputation – thanks to their father (Fandi Ahmad) who has groomed them into what they are today.
“They are reaping the dividends but there is much more to learn in today’s football. Football today is not like before. Today, credit also goes to the one who assists. No one person brings glory, ” said Jita.
“True Ikhsan scored two against Malaysia but you are not Fandi…Fandi is your father. Now you have to work on your strengths and iron out your weakness to create a new legacy of your own and build your reputation.”
Ikhsan’s double set the football world in this region abuzz, especially across the causeway, as Malaysia embarks on a new football journey under South Korean coach Kim Pan-gon. The Korean started his stint in Malaysia with a 2-0 win over the Philippines in his first match in charge at the same venue.
Fandi’s exploits earned him stints with clubs in Indonesia an Europe and earned 101 caps for his country. There is more to come for the “Kallang Roar” and there is more to come from the Fandi siblings.
Ikhsan, Irfan and Ilhan are looking at a bigger picture to take their football careers to new heights and Europe is their top priority.

AUSTRALIA AND INDIA FOR AZLAN SHAH CUP HOCKEY

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 12 – Crowd pullers Australia and India, ranked No 1 and No 4, top the list of invited teams for the 29th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament scheduled to be held at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh from Nov 16-25.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah has already given his consent for the proposed dates.
The other big names invited for the 10-day tournament are Germany (World No 5), New Zealand (No 8), and Canada (No 12). Malaysia, currently ranked No 11 complete the list.
With Malaysia opening up its borders and entering the endemic stage from April 1, Malaysia is set to host a number of international sports meets that had to be either canceled or postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the last two years.
Perak Hockey Association secretary Amarjit Singh Jessy said South Africa (No 13) and Wales (No 15) have been put on the standby list.
“We expect the top invited teams to come for this year’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup as it will serve as warm up and selection ground for the respective countries to pick their final squad for the World Cup in January next year,” said Amarjit, a former Olympics and World Cup hockey umpire, adding that this year’s Sultan Shah Cup will also count towards ranking points for the first time.
Next year’s World Cup is scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha India from Jan 13-19.
According to Amarjit, entrance for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is free and with Malaysia opening up its international borders, foreign hockey buffs are expected to make a beeline for the world class hockey tournament.
“However, we will not compromise on the strict SOPs enforced by the government as and when required. Health is of utmost importance and we will abide whatever SOPs are in place.”
At the last Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2019, South Korea defeated India 4-2 in a penalty shootout after both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Australia has won the much sought after silverware 10 times with India in second place with five.
For Malaysia, before the Azlan Shah Cup date in Ipoh, the national will battle hours in the Hero Asia Cup in Jakarta from May 23 – June 1. The top-tier Asian continental qualifier for the Men’s World Cup 2023, will see the top four teams making the cut to Bhubaneswar.
Malaysia, however, is skipping the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham but has set an eye on the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from Sept 10-25.

DARREN LOCKS DOWN TERENGGANU WITH A HATTRICK

0

PETALING JAYA, Apr 7 – The night belonged to England-born Malaysian Darren Lok as he plundered a hattrick to power all-local side Petaling Jaya FC to an impressive 3-0 win over highly touted Terengganu FC in a Super League match played at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Wednesday.

It was a nightmare for the Turtles who played with their foreigners and were skippered by the very experienced hitman Kipre Tchetche from Ivory Coast. It was a nightmare return for Tchetche in Terengganu after turning out for Kedah last season.

It was also a nightmare for Liberian Kpah Sherman who also turned out for Kedah last season, and it turned out to be a nightmare for Terengganu FC head coach Nafuzi Zain in his team’s first Super League match this season. The late start for the east coast outfit was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The other foreigners in the Terengganu side are Manuel Ott, Petrusa Shitembi (Namibia) and Habeeb Haroun (Bahrain), Philippines international Ott turned out for Melaka United last season.

The Turtles were left picking up the crumbs at the Petaling Jaya Stadium. It was all the more painful for Nafuzi and company when Darren, opened accounts for Petaling Jaya after 13 minutes off an assist from K. Kanan.

Darren, who donned Terengganu colors in 2020, scoring a hat-trick is certainly a “big boost” for him and signs of better things to come from the 31-year-old who was forced to pull out from the national squad under new South Korean coach Kim Pan-gon because of covid.

“It is good to score all the goals for my team but it is more pleasing to help my team win the match. Everyone played a role in the win and hopefully there will be better things to come for the team,” said Darren.

In the same breath, Darren is  also keeping his fingers crossed that he will catch the eye of the national coach for a national callup.

Darren got his other two goals in the 37th minute and in the 39th minute. For Terengganu goalkeeper Suhaimi Hussin it was a nightmarish start in the Super League that he would want to forget.

At the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar, Sri Pahang, also playing their first Super League match due to Covid, fell to a 1-0 defeat to Kedah. Rodney Celvin Nkwensive got the winner in the 55th minute, slotting home the winner off a melee following a corner kick that Pahang keeper Mamadou Samassa from Mali fumbled.

It was a “poor refereeing” at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras as eight-time Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim walked away with a 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur City FC.

The match also saw D. Kenny Palraj of KL City taking an early shower when he was red carded for his second yellow in a fracas with JDT’s Leandro Velazquez in the 57th minute.

The Southern Tigers scored a brace through Brazilian Bergson da Silva in the 82nd and 95th minutes after Argentinian Fernando Forestier opened the floodgates after 18 minutes. For the record, KL City were unbeaten at home last season.

LTdL KEMBALI TEMUI PEMINAT PADA JUN DEPAN

0

BAM LIFT BANS ON ZII JIA AND JIN WEI WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 – In another U-turn the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) was at the losing end – when professionalism won the battle and the national badminton body was forced to lift a two-year ban on national No 1 Lee Zii Jia with immediate effect.
It was a double victory for professionalism when BAM lifted a similar ban on two-time junior world champion Goh Jin Wei with immediate effect.
The turn of events came about after the two players met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at Perdana Putra.
Also at the meeting on Thursday were BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria and his two deputies Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Yunoos and Datuk V. Subramaniam.
At the same meeting was BAM patron Datin Seri Muhaini Zainal Abidin, who is the wife of the Prime Minister.
With the ban lifted, both, Zii Jia and Jin Wei will be able to compete in international tournaments.
BAM had earlier said with the ban, the two players will not be sanctioned by the BAM which effectively closed the door on their badminton career.
Both players had filed an appeal on the ban. Zii Jia was the first to send in his appeal before Jin Wei followed suit.
The ban, described as “cruel” in the badminton world, saw the BAM under fire, international and the backlash gained momentum by the day. The ban is described as “extremely harsh” as badminton is their livelihood.
Putting that aside, professionalism took an upward swing for the players but for BAM it is time to take stock of the politics in the association that has rocked the game in the country.

BAM CAVES IN AND GIVE ZII JIA BLESSINGS TO TURN PROFESSIONAL

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 – National No 1 Lee Zii Jia scored a morale boosting “victory” when the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria gave his “blessings” for the player to turn professional.
The two parties struck a “win-win” deal that will benefit both the player and the national badminton body.
This came a day after the 23-year-old Zii Jia filed an appeal on the two-year ban slapped on him for quitting the national team a week ago.
The ban, described as “cruel” in the badminton world, including an international cry that earned him massive backing from around the world, gained momentum by the day. The ban is described as “extremely harsh” as badminton is his livelihood.
Zii Jia, who hails from Kedah, is Malaysia’s hope for a podium finish at the 2024 Tokyo Olympics after a disastrous outing a the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, last year.
Much was expected from the Malaysian in Tokyo after he won the prestigious All-England title in March this year. He is also the reigning SEA Games champion.
The BAM came down hard on the player after he quit the BAM stable but it drew criticism all round.
The social media fully supported Zii Jia for his bid to turn professional to take his badminton career to a higher level.
It is believed he has received a lucrative deal from sponsors that is too good to turn down – far better than what he is getting from the BAM.
BAM deputy president Datuk Seri Jaharberdeen Yunoos confirmed that the win-win deal will benefit both parties. The details will be officially announced next week.
Earlier today, Zii Jia and his parents met Tan Sri Norza in a private meeting to sort out the matter on Zii Jia’s ban.
