SARAWAK UNITED IN POLE POSITION AFTER NEGERI SEMBILAN’S DEFEAT

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 – It was sweet revenge for Sarawak United as the East Malaysian outfit romped to a 3-0 win over Police in Friday’s Premier League match at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras to tighten their place at the top.
The Golden Hornbills, who suffered a shock defeat (2-0) to the lawmen in the first round, gave a commanding performance at Cheras but took their foot off the pedal after Brazilian Sandro Mendonca grabbed a brace in the first half.
He got his first of the night in 18 minutes and added another in the 36th minute. The two goals by Sandro, his first goals this season were certainly a big boost to the team as the league hits the home stretch.
Still, Nigerian hitman Uche Agba netted in the 82nd minute for his 13th goal for Sarawak United and stay in contention for the Golden Boot Award.
Agba is only one goal behind Ghanaian Jordan Mintah of Terengganu FC 2 and Fernando Rodgriquez of JDT FC II, who have 14 goals each.
”It was a good win for us. Police, however, have improved and gave us a run. I must thank our defense for doing a good job, said Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan who has given the players a two-day break after the match.
With the win, Sarawak United has opened up a five-point lead at the top with 357 points from 17 matches over second-placed Negri Sembilan who are on 32.
Negeri Sembilan conceded a last minute goal against Kelantan FC in their 2-1 defeat at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bahru.
The dropped points against Kelantan FC could cost Negeri Sembilan dearly in their quest to win the Premier League title.
Sarawak United and Negeri Sembilan are expected to battle for the crown.
Kelantan took the lead in the 12th minute through Syed Sobri but Negeri Sembilan made it all square through their Togo striker Francis Kone in the 16th minute.
Just when the match looked headed for a stalemate Norshamil Abdul Ghani struck the winner for Kelantan FC.
”We shot ourselves in the foot. We have only ourselves to blame for the heartbreaking defeat”, said Negeri Sembilan head coach K. Devan.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 – He called his family a night before the event to get their blessings and Sarawak-born Bonnie Bunyau Gustin clinched gold in Powerlifting in the Under-72kg at the Tokyo Paralympics on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Bonnie, making his Paralympic debut, not only fulfilled his father’s dream but he did it in style with a new Paralympic record of 228kg.
Bonnie, however was somewhat ”disappointed” that he was not able to break his own world record of 230kg when he failed in all his four attempts to lift 231kg.
Bonnie set his world record of 230kg which he did at the Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai in June.
The record-shattering gold in the Dubai leg was motivating for Bonnie who had also won the gold in the Bangkok leg in May.
Bonnie dedicated the gold in Tokyo to the people of Malaysia who celebrate Merdeka on Aug 31 and hopes that it will inspire other Malaysian para athletes.
He lifted 217kg in his first lift and went from strength to strength from here – lifting 225kg in his second and 228kg in the third for a new record.
The old record of 227kg belonged to Iraq’s Rasool Mohsin, achieved at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.
In Tokyo, Bonnie left his rivals trailing and Egypt’s Mahmoud Attia could only manage 191kg for his silver while Britain’s Micky Yule took the bronze with 182kg.
Bonnie is described as resilient and very determined in his powerlifting career and even quit schooling for that.
Father Gustin Jenang, a former Paralympic Powerlifter, had dreamt of his son (Bonnie) being a World and Paralympics champion – something which he had failed to achieve in his powerlifting career.
”Frankly, I was nervous as this is my first Paralympics. So to soothe my nervousness I called my family on the night before the competition. It helped me a lot. I am so happy and proud to have won.
”Paralympics is special…I have fulfilled my father’s dream. It’s a long journey and I hope to embark on doing better. This gold in Tokyo means a lot to me. I am prepared to work harder to achieve my goals,” said Bonnie.

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 27 – Bergson da Silva was too hot to handle for an under-strength Sri Pahang as the Brazilian notched a hattrick and fired Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) to a 3-0 win for their eighth successive Super League title at the Sultan Ibrahim stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru on Friday
In the process, Bergson also moved to the top as the top scorer with 23 goals to dislodge Selangor FC’s Nigerian striker Ifedayo Olusegun who has 22 goals.
The win over Sri Pahang kept the Southern Tigers on the top with an unassailable 51 points from 20 matches.
Terengganu FC is second in the league standings with 37 points from 19 matches followed by Kedah FC on 35 from 17 matches.
“We are obsessed with winning and it is an achievement that is a new landmark in Malaysian football. Of course, I am happy to be the coach…it’s tough but we have been the most consistent team in the league,” said JDT’s head coach Benjamin Mora.
In the same breath, the long-serving Mexican added: “It does mean he is the best coach when the team wins and neither a bad coach when the team loses.”
Pahang head coach Dollah Salleh, praised his new-look team for showing their commitment and desire to stay in the game against the highly touted opponents.
“We gave a tough fight and I am impressed with the young players, some of whom were making their (Super) league debut. They showed character,” said the former national coach who revealed that even the replacements picked up injuries.
“We are in the danger zone (relegation) but hopefully we can win at least one match in the remaining fixtures. Hopefully, we will have some of the injured coming back.”
Bergson scored the first of the night when he outwitted three markers before drilling home a grounder past Pahang goalkeeper, third choice Daniel Wafiuddin in the eighth minute.
For the record, a spate of injuries to first-team players and suspension to French defender Herold Gelon saw Pahang coach Dollah Salleh field a makeshift lineup against the Southern Tigers.
Bergson netted his second was neat flick into the Pahang right corner off an assist by Safiq Rahim on 41st minutes and completed his hattrick from a Gonzalo Cabrera pass just before the halftime break.
Hailed as the most consistent team in the league, JDT is also known as “The Untouchables” for their supremacy in the Malaysian League and has won the Super League title since 2014.
JDT is the best-managed club in the country, owned by HRH Major-General Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, the Crown Prince of Johor.
The Super League “kingpins” also won the prestigious Malaysia Cup twice (2017, 2019); the FA Cup (2016), and the Charity Shield six times (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021).
In between, JDT also engraved its name on the AFC Cup in 2015 to become the first Southeast Asian Club to win a Continental title. In the final played in Dushanbe, Tajikistan the Southern Tigers defeated local hope FC Istiklol 1-0 for the silverware.

PETALING JAYA, Aug 25 – A tired Kedah notched their third win on the trot with a 4-1 hammering of Petaling Jaya City FC in a postponed Super League match at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Wednesday.
Kedah’s big win came in the wake of their 2-1 win over Terengganu in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu last Sunday.
It is Kedah’s third win on the trot, having beaten Penang FC at home in a mid-week match.
For PJ City, nothing has gone right for the all-local side since resumed. The defeat to the Red Eagles is their fifth in a row and it was a bad night for PJ City who also had Rafi Nagoorgani sent off for a second yellow card offense in the 72nd minute.
He was earlier booked by referee Nazeeb Wahab together with Kpah Sherman in the first half.
It was a nightmare for PJ City FC when K. Prabakaran headed the ball into his own net in injury time before the halftime break while attempting to stop Kpah Sherman.
Earlier, Lebanese Rabih Ataya gave Kedah the lead as early as the third minute from a freekick outside the box after Zainon Syazwan was felled. Ataya fired a bullet of a left-footed shot from the freekick, giving PJ City goalkeeper Shihan Hazmi no chance at all.
Sherman, made it 3-0 for Kedah in the 56th minute when he shrugged off his marker and drilled home a stiff grounder from an assist by Kipre Tchetche. It was the Liberian’s 12th goal for Kedah in the league.
Former international Khryl Muhymeen pulled one back for PJ City when he whipped in a long ball from Prabakaran but substitute Fayadh Zulkifli finished off Sherman’s cross from the left in injury time for a 4-1 win.
Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) will take their eighth Super League when they take on Sri Pahang at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru this Friday. The Southern Tigers have won the league title since 2014.
JDT has amassed 48 points from 19 matches. Terengganu FC is second on 37 points while Kedah moved to third place on 35 points with two games in hand – ahead of Penang FC on 34 points (19 matches).

PETALING JAYA, Aug 23 – It was a cruise for Premier League title contenders Sarawak United in their 4-0 win over FAM-MSN Project squad at the UiTM FC Stadium in Shah Alam on Sunday night – a win which is a giant step towards their bid for promotion to the Super League.
The three points sent the Golden Hornbills back to the top of the 11-team league and relegated Negeri Sembilan to second place. Both teams have completed 16 matches.
This puts the two rivals in a keen tussle for the promotion battle. Sarawak United will face Police FC this Friday (Aug 27) while Negeri Sembilan has a daunting task against unpredictable Kelantan FC in an afternoon match at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bharu.
Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan hailed his team’s win – riding on the momentum on their 4-1 win over Perak FC 2.
”The players never stopped trying and never stopped moving forward,” said Elavarasan who is into his second season with the East Malaysian outfit.
“This gave us the two second half goals after taking a 2-0 lead before the break. Teamwork is another aspect we have worked on and this bore fruit in our recent matches.”
Brazilian Sandro Mendonca opened the floodgates in the 22nd minute before Australian Taylor Regan added the second with a header on 43rd minutes.
Former international Rizki Gopinathan came off the bench to make it 3-0 in the 85th minute.
Shamie Nur Iszuan completed the scoring in the last minute of regulation for a rousing 4-0 win.
Meanwhile, three red cards marred the Perak FC 2 – Police match at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh but the lawmen were still good enough for a comfortable 3-0 win.
Deep into injury Aizat Safuan Razali of Perak FC 2 and Nabil Ahmad Latpi were sent off for rough play.
A brace by their Japanese import Bruno Suzuki in the 13th and 29th minutes paved the way for the Police win. In between Nabil scored for Police on 22nd minutes before he was sent off.

EXPECT JDT TO WRITE MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL HISTORY AGAIN

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 22 – Seven-time Malaysian Super League champion Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) has once again proven that it is the most consistent team in the country and is on the verge of writing a new chapter in Malaysian football history.
Popularly known as the Southern Tigers, the Johor outfit is all set to pen its name in Malaysian football history books on Aug 28.
That is the day JDT will take on Sri Pahang at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru.
A win will give JDT 51 points from 20 matches and an unprecedented eight successive Super League titles in the M-League since making its debut in 2013.
The Southern Tigers have proven themselves as ”The Untouchables” in the highly competitive league since winning its first Super League title in 2014.
There has been no looking back since then for JDT, the best-managed club in the country, owned by HRH Major General Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, the Crown Prince of Johor.

“We are not over confident but we can ride on the momentum and make it count,” said JDT’s fitness coach Jorge Alvarez.
The Spaniard was in charge of the team against PJ City instead of Mexican Benjamin Mora.

PETALING JAYA, Aug 21 – While seven-time Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) tightened their grip on winning eighth successive titles with a 2-0 win over Petaling Jaya City FC, Kedah FC put a big dent in Terengganu’s hopes of a second-place finish.
Kedah handed the Turtles a 2-1 defeat at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu  – just a week after Terengganu beat Sri Pahang 2-0 at the same venue.
Rabih Ataya netted his first goal for Kedah deep into injury time in the first half following an assist from Syazwan Zainon.
The lead came after the homesters muffed scoring chances with David da Silva and Makan Kanote the main culprits.
Terengganu fell further behind six minutes after the restart. This time, Syazwan, who had a good game throughout turned scorer when he well timed his run for a first timer off Kipre Tchetche.
David Silva pulled one back for the Turtles on 69 minutes with his trademark booming freekick from 35 meters that Kedah custodian Ifwat Akmal could only watch.
JDT was not at its best against all-local side PJ City at the Petaling Jaya Stadium with goals scored by Bergson da Silva (26th) and substitute Mohamadou Sumareh (82nd) were enough to do the damage.
The Southern Tigers remained at the top with 48 points from 19 matches with Terengganu second on 37 points from the same number of matches.
Selangor FC is in third spot on 32 followed by Kedah also on 32. However, Kedah have played only 16 matches.
At the Perak Stadium in Ipoh, Selangor outplayed Perak FC 3-0  with Nigerian Ifedayo Olusegun netting a brace in the 45th and 60th minutes (penalty).
He is currently the league’s top scorer with 22 goals followed by Bergson with a tally of 20.

PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE CHASE GETS HOTTER

PETALING JAYA, Aug 21 – Negeri Sembilan defeated Kelantan United 2-0 at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Bharu to regain the lead at the top of the 11-team Premier League with 32 points from 16 matches – dislodging Sarawak United who slipped to second place.
However, the lead could change hands when Sarawak United takes on the bottom-placed FAM MSN Project squad at the UiTM Stadium on Sunday. The Golden Hornbills now collected 31 points from 15 matches.
Playing an afternoon match, Negeri Sembilan grabbed an early 10th minute lead with skipper Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak scored from a penalty after a Kelantan United defender was hauled up for handball.
Frances Kone, who hails from Togo, scored for the visitors in the  81st minutes for full points and keep the title race open.
It was a bad day for Kelantan teams when Kelantan FC suffered a 3-1 defeat to Kuching City FC in another afternoon match played at the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium.
Kuching City, coached by former national coach Irfan Bakti, scored through Alif Hassan (12th), Michael Izijie ((33rd), and Joseph Kalang Tie (55th) while Christos Intzidis netted Kelantan FC’s consolation goal.
Meanwhile, Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan has been drilling into his players not to underrate FAM-MSN although their opponents are at the bottom of the table.
“We respect all opponents…no matter what their position is in the league standings. At this stage, we cannot afford to slip and drop points. It is a match we need to win at all costs and do not let our guard down,” said Elavarasan.
“It is a crucial match for us in our bid for the title.”

KL CITY BURY SRI PAHANG IN KUANTAN

PETALING JAYA, Aug 20 – Defensive lapses proved costly for Sri Pahang as Kuala Lumpur City FC carved out a 2-0 win over the East Coast side in the only Super League encounter played at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Friday.
With the league at the tail end of the competition, the defeat left the Elephants in the relegation zone in ninth position with only 17 points after 18 matches.
KL City is in sixth place after 19 matches with 27 points.
The home defeat is all the more painful for Pahang coach Dollah Sallah, a former national coach.
He was hoping for Pahang to bounce back after a 2-0 defeat to neighbours Terengganu FC in their last match played in Kuala Terengganu.
Pahang can thank their goalkeeper Daniel Wafiuddin Sa’dun for keeping the scoreline down against the visitors. KL City went into attack mode right from the start but could not hit the target either through poor finishing or Daniel keeping them at bay.
However,  Bojan Hodak’s players finally struck four minutes after the restart. Colombian hitman Romel Morales made it count off an assist from skipper Paulo Josue, always an inspiration to his teammates.
Morales, kept his cool after Josue caught the backline in sixes and sevens to slot home the opening goal. It was all KL City needed to get their adrenalin flowing and it was all over for Pahang in the 71st minute when the visitors netted their second.
This time it was Zhafri Yahya who got his name into the scoresheet. J. Partiban worked his way up on the left and his deep cross caught the Pahang backline on the wrong foot. Zhafri made no mistake with the opportunity that came his way.
For KL City their unbeaten run now stretches to nine matches but more importantly left Hodak pleased with the overall performance of his team.
