COUNT ON THEM TO DELIVER AT TOKYO PARALYMPICS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 – Where the able-bodied failed to deliver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Malaysia can count on their para-athletes to strike gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics from Aug 24-Sept 5 in the Land of the Rising Sun.
And there is every possibility Malaysia can improve on their three-gold, one bronze haul at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
After five years, the Malaysian para-athletes are ready to roar again after Malaysia failed miserably at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with only a silver through Datuk Azizulhasni Awang in cycling (keirin) and Aaron Chia-So Wooi Yik in badminton (men’s doubles).
It was a far cry from the four-silvers and a bronze won at the Rio Olympics with the silvers coming from Datuk Lee Chong Wei (men’s singles); Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles); Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles); and Cheong Jun Hoong-Pandelela Rinong (women’s synchronized 10m platform). The bronze was from Azizulhasni (cycling men’s keirin).
In the Rio Paralympics, Malaysia’s historic gold was from Ziyad Zolkefli (shot put T20), Ridzuan Puzi (100m T36); and Abdul Latif Romly (long jump T20) while Siti Noor Radiah Ismail (long jump T20) returned with a bronze.
Chef de Mission to the Tokyo Paralympics is Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin. The three-gold target in Tokyo remains but is counting on a better haul in Tokyo.
Ziyad, Ridzuan and Abdul Latif are gold targets but Malaysia has not ruled on gold strikes from powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (men’s 72kg category), archer S. Suresh, Cheah Liek Hou and Didin Taresoh (both badminton).
Malaysia is represented by 22 para athletes and will compete in athletics, cycling, swimming, achery, badminton, boccia, powerlifting, table tennis and wheelchair tennis. Some of the athletes are already in Tokyo.
Bonnie and Siti Nooriasah Mohamad Arifin have been picked as flag bearers at the opening ceremony that will be held at the Tokyo Olympics Stadium.

KEDAH’S FACES TOUGH TERENGGANU AWAY

0
PETALING JAYA, Aug 18 – Kedah got a double boost before traveling to Kuala Terengganu to face Terengganu in this Saturday’s Super League biggie at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak.
A 4-1 win over Penang FC at home on Tuesday could not have come at a better time for the Red Eagles – a win that lifted the team’s spirit and served as a morale booster after 4-2 defeat to Selangor FC on their return to league action following a long layoff due to the corona virus pandemic.
Another piece of good news for Kedah is that Renan Alves is available for the Terengganu match. The tough-tackling Brazilian was red-carded against Selangor and sat out the match against Penang.
Kedah’s Singaporean coach Aidil Sharin Sahak, nevertheless, is bracing for a ”tough, tough” time against the Turtles. Terengganu is currently placed second in the 12-team league with 37 points from 18 matches. Kedah is fourth on 29 points from 15 matches.
”The win over Penang and Renan’s return gives us hope with plenty of positives. That is exactly what we intend to do. Without a doubt, Terengganu has the home advantage but it stops at that.
“Getting three points against Terengganu are not impossible but we have our work cut out for us. It has been tough on us due to the long break (because of the pandemic). The defeat to Selangor was painful but we found our rhythm against Penang,” said Aidil.
Ivory Coast striker Kipre Tchetche scored a brace against Penang. Countryman Kpah Sherman and skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar netted one each in the big win over the Panthers.
Sherman is also Kedah’s top scorer with 11 goals. Tchetche has six goals to e credit.

PENANG MAULED AS KEDAH ROMP TO A 4-1 WIN

0
PETALING JAYA, Aug 17 – An understrength Penang FC was no match for Kedah FC as the Red Eagles stormed to a 4-1 win in Tuesday’s only Super League match played at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar.
It was a welcome return to winning ways for Kedah which came in the wake of their 4-2 defeat to Selangor FC at the same venue last week.
The Panthers were severely handicapped without big names like Casagrande, Ryuji Utomo, and Endrick dos Santos – who were either serving a suspension or kayoed by illness.  Kedah too had defender Renan Alves suspended for the match for a red-card offense in the match against Selangor.
Ivory Coast striker Kipre Techetche was the toast of Kedah with a brace. He got his first in the 17th minute off an assist by skipper Baddrol Bakthiar. He struck again in the 38th minute to take his personal tally to six goals.
Baddrol scored Kedah’s second on the night in the 23rd minute with a first-time drive past a rooted Penang custodian Samuel Somerville after being set up by Techetche with a well-timed cutback.
Penang pulled one back through David Rowley off a long ball from Quinten Cheng on the right that caught Kedah goalkeeper Ifwat Akmal caught on the wrong foot. This was in the 44th minute.
Kedah, however, was not finished yet. Another Ivory Coast hitman in the team Kpah Sherman got the fourth goal for the Red Eagles in 55 minutes, taking his tally to 11 goals in the league.
Seven-time Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim is at the top of the league standings with 45 points from 18 matches, followed by Terengganu FC on 37 points. Penang, despite the defeat to Kedah, is third on 31 points while Kedah moved into the fourth position on 29 points – ahead of Selangor and three games in hand.

GHANI HASSAN IS NEW MFL PRESIDENT

0
PETALING JAYA, Aug 16 – After coming through a torrid time due to the corona virus pandemic which hit the Malaysian football hard, Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan kept the game “alive” despite several SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
It was not an easy job to do or handle but Ab Ghani, as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Malaysian Football League (MFL) won praise for his ability to “run the show” to complete the Malaysian League last year although it was decided a shortened one round league.
The prestigious Malaysia Cup was cancelled and so was the FA Cup. It was done to safeguard players and officials from the ravaging virus.
This year’s leagues are near completion and football crazy fans can look forward for “thrillers” as the final rounds come around- thanks to Ab Ghani the livewire in MFL.
However, Ab Ghani was a unanimous decision to take over as President of MFL – to replace incumbent Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.
Hamidin, who is also the president of the FA of Malaysia (FAM), has stepped down from the post.
The MFL Board of Directors were unanimous in their decision. Simply said Ab Ghani is the right man for the right job and many believe he has the credentials to handle the job.
While the hunt for Ab Ghani’s replacement is on, the Negri Sembilan-born Ab Ghani will continue to be the acting CEO until a new candidate takes over. He is expected to be named in the next few days.
Ab Ghani was named the MFL CEO in March last year. He was the acting CEO since December 2019 after Kevin Ramalingam quit.
For the record, Hamidin was instrumental in taking MFL to new heights during his term and together with Ab Ghani, plotted the game’s progress in the country.
Previous MFL presidents before Hamidin were Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.
Many expect Ab Ghani to deliver and chart Malaysian football fortunes.
