KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Oct – A 1-0 win over Melaka United at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on Monday sent Kedah to the second spot in the Super League standings with a 20th-minute header by defender Shakir Hamzah settling the outcome.
The Singapore international’s power-packed header from a corner-kick set-piece was enough for the Red Eagles to take 19 points – one point ahead of Perak who slipped to the third spot in the league already won by Johor Darul Takzim for the seventh-year running after a 4-1 win over Sabah last week.
Kedah and Perak will complete their league fixtures this Saturday at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh. The Red Eagles need only a point to finish second and clinch a place in the AFC Cup. JDT will compete in the AFC Champions League by virtue of winning the Malaysian League.
For Melaka, it was their second successive defeat after going down to Sabah at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Sept 27.
The match against Kedah was postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was rescheduled to KLFA Stadium at the request of Melaka.
