KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 – World No. 1, Kento Momota of Japan is the Perodua Malaysia Masters Badminton Championship 2020 champion which ended at Aziata Arena, Bukit Jalil here today.

The Japanese beat Viktor Axelson of Denmark 24-22, 21-11 in the mens single final.

It took Momota about an hour to tame the aggressive Danes in the nail-bitting match.

Momota  said it was a good start for the year although he was not fully fit to face the tournament.

“I’m not saying that I’m the best player. I have to work extra hard when you realised that you’re not in a perfect condition. But I have the game plan strength,” said Momota who had two world titles within his belt.

“When my opponent scores a point, I have to move on and focus on the next step. That separates me from other players,” he added.

In the previous edition, Momota lost at the opening to compatriot Kenta Nishimoto.

Meanwhile, Chen Yu Fei of China outplayed top seed, Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the women’s singles final.

Yu Fei won the match 21-17, 21-10 in just 37 minutes.

In an all China women’s doubles final,  Li Wen Mei-Zheng Yu defeated  Du Yue-Li Yin Hui 21-19, 16-21, 21-19.
