PETALING JAYA, 12 Oct – Finishing third in the Super League behind champions Johor Darul Takzim and runners-up Kedah is certainly a confidence booster for Terengganu when they compete in the prestigious Malaysia Cup competition.
The Turtles were never given hopes of a top-three finish in the elite Super League but this they did in style with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over neighbors Pahang at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu on Sunday.
It was enough to clinch third place with 19 points when Kedah defeated Perak 3-2 at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.
The Perak-Kedah match decided the second spot with Kedah on 22 points while Perak had to settle for the fourth spot.
”It is something we can be proud of…a top-three finish. Many did not give the young Terengganu team any hopes of finishing in the top bracket especially when we had a young team.
”’The experience of playing in the Super League will come in handy for the team. It will stand in good stead for the young players when playing in the Malaysia Cup,” said Terengganu head coach Nafuzi Zain, a former international.
At the completion of the Super League, Kedah earned the slot to compete in the AFC Cup as runners-up to JDT, who will play in the AFC Champions League. This is the seventh successive year the Southern Tigers have won the Malaysian Super League title.
“It was a tremendous team effort and the young players showed their commitment on the field although we had our off days too when the league resumed,” added Nafuzi.
