KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 – Despite running on a ‘limited’ budget but the toughest route in Le Tour de Langkawi history, the 30th edition (LTdL 2026) ended on a high note in Putrajaya yesterday.

Every day, the competition along the chosen route displayed a high standard of racing that was difficult to predict, even though the four main contested jerseys were held by their wearers since Stage 1 in Kampar and Stage 2 at Gunung Jerai.

At the end of the eight-stage, 1,285.5km competition, WorldTeam XDS-Astana rider Matteo Malucelli was crowned Sprint King and absolute winner of the blue jersey sponsored by the 2027 SEA Games and Para Games Organising Secretariat (MASOC), competing closely with rider Riley Pickrell from the newly-introduced ProTeam squad, Modern Adventure Cycling Team.

The overall leader’s orange jersey (GC), sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), was won by ProTeam Tudor Pro Cycling rider Lennart Jasch, who put on the jersey right after finishing the Stage 2 climb at Gunung Jerai and defended it through to Stage 8 last Sunday.

The German rider also won the King of the Mountains (KOM) polka dot jersey sponsored by Bubbles O2, despite losing it for a day to WheelTop Rotor Cycling Team rider Petr Rikunov who won at the Cameron Highlands summit on Stage 4 before Jasch reclaimed it during the ascent to the summit of Genting Highlands on Stage 5 and defended it all the way to Putrajaya.

A similar effort was shown by the winner of the Best Asian Rider white jersey sponsored by the National Sports Council (NSC), won by Aisan Racing Team rider Yuhi Todome, despite facing persistent pressure daily from other Asian continental riders.

As Jasch noted, even though the action within the peloton looked easy each day on paper, it was filled with strategic and mathematical tactics to protect time gaps and points tallies in both the GC and King of the Mountains classifications.

Perhaps the only slight disappointment for LTdL fans this time around was the performance of local riders, who failed to reach the main podium after the conclusion of each stage.

However, the emergence of several young riders such as Khe Zhe Yie, Chan Jian Le, brothers Tsen Ren Bao and Tsen Ren Han, as well as Adam Danish Afdzal in LTdL2026 promises great potential for Malaysian tour cycling in the coming years.

Outside the peloton, it cannot be denied that the scale of this edition appeared slightly scaled down due to the lack of a large budget from private sponsors. However, this did not in any way diminish the thrill, excitement and cheer experienced by hundreds of thousands of fans and spectators at the start lines, finish lines and all along the route.

In fact, for the President of the Commissaires Panel (PCP) from the International Cycling Union (UCI) assigned to LTdL2026, Paul Watson, there was great satisfaction with the high quality of organization and the smooth execution of the race every day.

Speaking before the start of Stage 8 in Muar two days ago, the UCI Commissaire from Ireland expressed his satisfaction for the high degree of professionalism shown by key personnel from the LTdL2026 Secretariat and staff across every department.

“(My late) father (Jack Watson) previously served four times in LTdL and used to share stories about LTdL and the joy of coming to work in Malaysia every time. Now I can see and experience it for myself.

“All I can say is, I am very satisfied to see the high quality of organization running smoothly without any issues, while receiving wide media coverage both locally and internationally. With feedback from the other three Panel Commissaires, this will surely leave a positive impact on the evaluation report to the UCI later,” he said.

Meanwhile, LTdL2026 Secretariat Chief Operating Officer Emir Abdul Jalal said this 30th edition presented its own set of unique challenges that ultimately yielded maximum satisfaction.

“Yes, we struggled somewhat because we did not have a large budget for this year’s staging, but ‘the race must go on.’ It was a massive responsibility, and as this 8-stage tour comes to an end, my feelings are a mix of emotion, pride and satisfaction.

“I am sure the same feelings are shared by the organizing committee from the NSC, including LTdL2026 Event Director Safrushahar Yusoff, as well as all personnel from government agencies, the private sector and individuals who worked tirelessly before, during and right after the completion of this race.

“Looking at how smoothly this LTdL ran and the reaction from the President of the Commissaires Panel, I am confident we will be able to retain our ‘green card’ status for LTdL, just as achieved last year,” he stated.

According to him, to ensure an even better organization for the 2.ProSeries status tour next year, his team will hold a post-mortem to evaluate and find ways to rectify remaining shortcomings.
