KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 7 – Sarawak United FC roared to a 2-0 win over Kelantan United in their opening Premier League match played at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Sunday.
Full points from the match against Kelantan United is a perfect start to the East Malaysian outfit and head coach E. Elavarasan in their bid to gain promotion to the Super League next season.
Sarawak United has undergone a massive revamp and has appointed former national coach B. Satiananthan as the technical director.
Christie Jayaseelan paved the way for the win with a 12th-minute goal. Nigerian hitman Uche Agba made it 2-0 on 32 minutes when he converted a penalty.
Elavarasan did not field his Brazilian midfielder Sandro Mendonca in his starting line-up but it did not matter on a night when Sarawak United dominated the proceedings.
”The first match is always a difficult one. So the win over Kelantan (United) is a good start for the team. It gives confidence to the players for the coming matches,” said Elavarasan after the win.
Sarawak United has also signed up experienced foreigners for the new season. Apart from Sandro, there is also the towering Australian defender Taylor Regan and Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon. Sandro and Taylor played for Selangor last season.
Sarawak United’s next match is away against Perak 2.
Meanwhile, Perak FC and Petaling Jaya City FC shared points with a scoreless draw in a Super League match played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.
