JAKOBSEN LEADS PICNIC POSTNL’S CHALLENGE

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 – Last year’s overall individual champion, Max Poole is not in Team Picnic PostNL line-up for this year’s PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2025 (PLTdL25).

Without Poole, the WorldTeam Team Picnic PostNL will be banking on the experience of Fabio Jakobsen as they begin the challenging eight-day PLTdL25 from September 28 to October 5.

With only one name from last year’s six-rider team lineup retained, Bjorn Koerdl, Picnic PostNL is counting on Jakobsen’s extensive experience as a sprint specialist to elevate the team’s profile, especially on the flat stages.

Undoubtedly, the 29-year-old Dutch-born rider from Heukelum will be counting on assistance from two of his teammates who can setup the pace in the final push namely Bram Welten and Dilion Corkery when they face off against other top sprinters.

PLTdL25 Chief Operating Officer (COO), Emir Abdul Jalal, said that although Poole’s absence might affects the excitement of this year’s race, Jakobsen’s presence makes up for it. Jakobsen has established himself as one of the world’s top sprinters, which will make the competition in the final dash to the finish line this year more open, intense and unpredictable.

“Jakobsen is a ‘big name’ as he has won one stage at the Tour de France and five stages at the Vuelta a Espana, including winning the Vuelta’s points jersey in 2021.

“With a collection of 46 career victories so far, including at the TdF and Vuelta, Picnic PostNL appears with the goal of winning a stage in the team’s second appearance this year. This is because, besides Jakobsen, his teammate Welten also has vast experience and is capable of pulling Jakobsen to the front of the peloton before creating space for the final sprint. Welten himself is capable of securing a stage win,” said Emir.

Welten, 28, who joined the team last year, has experience riding for other major WorldTeams like Arkea-Samsic (2020-2021), Groupama FDJ (2022-2023) and has ridden in three Grand Tours.

Without Poole, the battle for the overall individual green jersey this year also rest on the shoulders of 21-year-old rider Juan Guillermo Martinez who was signed from the ProTeam, Q36.5. Koerdl, 21, finished 50th overall last year as a support rider.

The Colombian rider was the King of the Mountains at the Giro della Valle d’Aosta last year, in addition to finishing an impressive third overall at the Tour of Turkey and eighth overall at the Tour of Rwanda this year.

Another rider sent by the team is Jurgen Zommermaand, 19, who is expected to take on domestique duties for Jakobsen, Koerdl and Martinez.

“It will certainly be interesting to see how Picnic PostNL is able to compete in this PLTdL25 as they will be strongly challenged throughout the eight-day race from Stage 1 in Langkawi Island to the final day of Stage 8 at KLCC,” Emir added.

PLTdL25 will consist of eight stages, covering a total distance of 1,243.5km which will traverse every state across Peninsular Malaysia. The 2.ProSeries status race on the UCI Asia Tour calendar is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) through the National Sports Council (MSN) with the support of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).

The race will begin in Langkawi Island on September 28 with the first stage covering a distance of 96.5 kilometers (km) followed by Stage 2 from Padang Besar, Perlis to Kepala Batas, Penang (170.1km); Stage 3 from Gerik, Perak to Pasir Puteh, Kelantan (198.2km); Stage 4 from Kuala Terengganu to Kemaman (140.8km); Stage 5 from Temerloh to Fraser’s Hill, Pahang (133.7km); Stage 6 from Shah Alam, Selangor to Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan (123.4km); Stage 7 from Melaka to Medini, Johor (214.6km) and Stage 8 from Tangkak, Johor to Kuala Lumpur (180.5km) on October 5.

FORMER TSG RIDERS STRENGTHEN BURGOS CHALLENGE AT PLTdL 2025

Sainbayar (right)

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 – Two highly experienced former foreign riders who once don Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) jersey will be the key assets for the Spanish ProTeam, Burgos-Burpellet BH in the PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2025 (PLTdL25) schedule to be held from September 28 to October 5.

In the preliminary list of six riders submitted to the PLTdL Secretariat, the team, making its fourth consecutive appearance, has included Merhawi Kudus and Jambaljamts Sainbayar who are well-known to cycling fans in the country.

The team will also retain last year’s King of the Mountain polka dot jersey winner, Mario Aparicio Munoz. Three other riders are David Martin, Georgios Bonglas, and Jose Manuel Diaz Gallego, all of whom have previously competed in the PLTdL.

PLTdL25 Chief Operating Officer, Emir Abdul Jalal stated that based on the list of six riders, the team appears to be aiming for at least three titles in the eight-stage race.

“Merhawi Kudus, Sainbayar, Aparicio and Gallego are all very experienced and respected climbers. So it’s no surprise that besides aiming for victories in Stage 3 Gerik-Pasir Puteh and Stage 5 Temerloh-Bukit Fraser, they will also be hunting for the overall individual green jersey, the King of the Mountain polka dot jersey and the overall team classification,” said Emir in a media statement today.

Kudus, 31, wore the TSG jersey last year and first made a name for himself after joining MTN-Qhubeka in 2014, where he finished second in the PLTdL overall individual classification.

During his four years with Qhubeka, his great talent led the rider to join WorldTour teams Astana (2019-2021) and EF Education (2022-2023) where he had the opportunity to compete in the Giro d’Italia (twice), the Tour de France (once) and the Vuelta a Espana (6 times).

Sainbayar, 31, also a respeced climber, wore the TSG jersey for three years (2021-2023) and finished 9th in the overall individual classification at PLTdL22. He also achieved numerous successes at the Asian level before the Mongolian national champion joined Burgos last year.

Aparicio, 25, has been with Burgos since 2021 and repaid the Spanish ProTeam’s trust by winning the King of the Mountain title at last year’s PLTdL24, accumulating 27 points, 5 points ahead of overall individual champion Max Poole from Team Firmenich PostNL (now Picnic PostNL) in addition to finishing sixth in the overall individual classification.

Strengthening Burgos’ challenge will be Gallego, 31, an experienced rider who has competed twice in the Vuelta (2022 and 2023) and won the Combativity award twice in that Grand Tour.

Burgos two sprint specialists this time are the Spanish rider Martin, 26, who rode for the Polti Kometa team in last year’s PLTdL and three-time Greek national champion Bonglas, 35, who made his first PLTdL appearance in 2020 with the Ssios Miogee Cycling Team.

”Burgos strength this time is likely on the climbing stages, and with four climbers, it will be very interesting to see the team’s strategy each day especially with Kudus, Sainbayar and Aparicio on the hilly routes.

”With all their experience and ‘insider knowledge of the routes and unpredictable weather in this country, Burgos appears to have a unique strength throughout the eight days of competition,” Emir added.

PLTdL25 will pass through all 12 states in Peninsular Malaysia over eight days, covering a total distance of 1,243.5km, starting in Langkawi Island and ending at KLCC, Kuala Lumpur.

The ProSeries status tour on the UCI Asia Tour calendar is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) through the National Sports Council (MSN) with the support of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).

PERTANDINGAN MEWARNA HAPPY BAG MAKIN DAPAT SAMBUTAN

0

“Anak-anak saya memang seronok ikut suami menonton perlumbaan, tetapi kadang-kadang mereka cepat bosan.

TUDOR TO PIN THEIR HOPES ON DAINESE TO DOMINATE FLAT STAGES AT PETRONAS LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI 2025

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 – The Swiss ProTeam, Tudor Pro Cycling Team is set to bank their hopes on their new sprint specialist, Alberto Dainese to dominate the flat stages of the eight-day PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2025 (PLTdL25) which runs from September 28 to October 5.

While not including Arvid de Kleijn who claimed four stage wins in the 2023 and 2024 PLTdL, Dainese arrives with a bigger reputation, having won two stages at the Giro d’Italia in 2022 and 2023 as well as one stage at the Vuelta a Espana in 2023.

The 27-year-old rider from Abano Terme, Italy was recruited by Tudor from Team Sunweb last year and has been designated as the primary weapon among the six riders which the team submitted to the PLTdL25 Secretariat.

PLTdL25 Chief Operating Officer, Emir Abdul Jalal, stated that while the organisers are unsure why Tudor did not include de Kleijn, Dainese’s presence shows the team’s determination to dominate the flat stages and reclaim the King of Sprints orange jersey, sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This will be the team’s third consecutive year competing.

“Arvid has his own fans in the PLTdL since he won two stages in 2023 and the King of Sprints jersey. However, despite repeating his two stage wins last year, he failed to defend the jersey which was taken by Matteo Malucelli.

“Perhaps because of this reason, Tudor is sending Dainese who has a bigger reputation and experience on the Grand Tour stage, even though this will be Dainese’s first appearance at PLTdL, a race known for its unique challenges of competing in more extreme weather,” said Emir.

The other riders on Tudor’s preliminary roster are Robin Froideraux, Mika Heming, Mathys Rondel, Roland Thalmann and Yannis Voisard.

Froideraux, 27, and Heming, 25, are expected to act as Dainese’s lead-out men for the sprint finishes, while Voisard is Tudor’s best bet to challenge for the green jersey, sponsored by PETRONAS in the general classification.

Voisard, 27, also has Giro experience from his time with the Arkea-Samsic team in 2021, in addition to winning the Alpes Isere Tour in 2022 and competing in classics like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, La Fleche Wallonne, and the Tour of Algarve.

He will be supported by Rondel, 22, and Thalmann, 32, especially when riders face the first climb on Stage 3, the 198.2km Gerik-Pasir Puteh route which features one Category 1 (Cat1) and one Cat2 climb as it crosses the Titiwangsa Mountains.

“Tudor has been less prominent in the general classification green jersey competition with their best rider in 2023, Hannas Wilksch finishing 15th overall and Rick Pluimers only managing 12th place last year.

Voisard seems to be their best bet for both the PETRONAS green jersey and the King of the Mountains polka dot jersey this year,” Emir added.

This year’s PLTdL25, which spans 12 states in Peninsular Malaysia over a total distance of 1,243.5km, will feature 22 teams including 3 WorldTeams, 8 ProTeams, 10 Continental teams and the Malaysian national team.

PLTdL25 with the ProSeries status on the UCI Asia Tour calendar, is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) through the National Sports Council (MSN) in collaboration with the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).
