ONLY TIME WILL TELL FOR LUQMAN

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Aug – Malaysia’s 18-year-old Luqman Hakim Shamsudin took his first step towards a professional football career in Europe on Thursday when he signed a five-year contract with Belgian first division club KV Kortrijk.
The signing ceremony took place at the Berjaya Hotel in Kuala Lumpur which was witnessed by Malaysian tycoon, Tan Sri Vincent Tan who owns the Belgian club.
Vincent also owns Cardiff City which plies its football trade in the English Championships. Cardiff City narrowly missed promotion to the English Premier League.
For the record, Belgium is ranked No 1 in the FIFA ranking list and is certainly a big, big Test for Luqman who hails from Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
The budding striker, however, will have his hands full playing in the Belgium League which is known as Jupiler Pro League. More so when he could not even break into the Selangor senior team that plays in the Malaysian Super League.
No doubt he has found a place in the National Under-19 squad for the Asian Championships  which are scheduled to be held in Tashkent in October.
Feeling honored and getting the opportunity to play in Europe is one thing but it is no guarantee that Luqman will succeed where others like Nazmi Faiz Mansor, Akmal Rizal Rakhli failed miserably.
Only time will tell if Luqman will be homesick like them and miss his Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, Nasi Dagang or Asam Pedas.
For now, it is a big break for Luqman and let us pray that succeeds where others failed.
Let us hope that he will keep Malaysia’s flag flying despite his small physique and match his bigger sized teammates and opponents.
It is a journey of thousand steps for Luqman who is determined to make good in Belgium.

JUN HAO, CHONG KIM MAKE GRADE TO DIVISION 1

0

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Aug – As expected, Leong Jun Hao and Lim Chong King confirmed their slots to Division One of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitation Championship after fending off some serious challenge in Division 2.

After two days of keen competition in Bukit Kiara, Jun Hao and Chong King dominated the top two groups of Division 2 to ensure their passage to the main Division One which will start on Aug 11.

The two players are on the same 8 points after brilliantly maintaining their unbeaten record in all four matches they have played.

Jun Hao grabbed his third win in the morning session after streaking over Wyman Goh in a three-set thriller 20-22, 21-12, 21-17 confirming his slot to the main division by beating Muhammad Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar in straight sets 21-14, 21 -18.

“My game is better today. My aim had always been to take it one game at a time to make the grade to Division 1.

“The competition in Division 1 will be a lot keener and I know that I will have to shore up all the shortcomings especially when it comes to maintaining focus,” said Jun Hao.

On the other hand, Jun Hao’s rival Chong Kim is not too concerned about winning the overall top spot in Division 2 where his concentration was only to maintain momentum and win a spot to Division 1.

“The players are tired from yesterday, but I felt that the game today is better, and the pace is faster especially during important parts of the game.

“I am relieved to have gained the momentum after playing four matches and I do not feel any pressure when I am on court,” said Chong King who came back from losing in the first set to beat Ter Chun Long 19-21, 21-16, 21-13 in the morning session.

He was again forced to work hard against Wyman Goh in the afternoon before securing a 21-16, 22-20 win to finish second on points after four matches.

Chong King and Jun Hao will meet tomorrow afternoon to determine the winner and runners-up position.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar occupied the third spot with four points from four matches played.

Shaqeem won over Low Eu Cong 21-15, 2118-21, 21-12 in the morning but failed to get past Jun Hao in the afternoon session.

Wyman Goh is fourth with two points while Low Eu Cong and Ter Chun Long are fifth and sixth respectively.

The BAM Invitational Championship is a BAM-organised event following four months of inactivity due COVID-19 pandemic.

The championship is being held at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM) in Bukit Kiara without spectators – using the ’round robin’ format and divided into two phases.

For phase 1, the match will take place from 5-7 August involving six back-up players who will compete to win the top two spots for the chance to play in the main division.

BADMINTON: GOOD START FOR JUN HAO AND CHONG KING

0

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Aug – Leong Jun Hao (pic) and Lim Chong King made a fine start to their campaign in Division Two of the BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) Badminton Invitational Championship which kicked-off in Bukit Kiara today.

Jun Hao acknowledged his problem of a ‘slow start’ after being out of action since March this year following the Movement Control Order (MCO) that was put in place due to COVID-19.

“The first day was a little difficult for me but I hope I can do better after this. My achievement was not as expected.

“As it was previously, I did face the issue of a slow start and it is something which I am trying to change,” said Jun Hao .

Jun Hao came back from losing the first set to take the next two sets 20-22 21-16 21-14 to overcome Ter Chun Long in the morning session before ensuring his second victory of the day when he saw off Low Eu Cong with a straight set victory 23-21, 22-20.

On the other hand, Chong King did not feel the pressure of being placed in Division Two as he hunts for a promotion.

“Other than Jun Hao, I feel that Wyman Goh is capable of giving a good fight. But I don’t want to focus on just a few players where it is better that I concentrate and maintain the right momentum in every game, “said Chong King.

Chong King won in straight sets 21-15, 21-14 over Low Eu Cong in the morning session but struggled in the afternoon before he was able to fend off Muhammad Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar 19-21, 21-15, 21-14.

Two players currently in third place in Division 2 are Muhammad Shaqeem and Wyman Goh who recorded one win and one loss at the end of the days’ session.

Wyman Goh fell to a 21-18, 9-21, 17-21 loss to Muhammad Shaqeem Shahyar in the first session but came back to beat Ter Chun Long in straight sets 22-20, 21-16.

On the other hand, Muhammad Shaqeem Shahyar was forced to work hard before he was able to beat Wyman Goh in a three-set thriller 18-21, 21-9, 21-17 but failed to get past Chong King with a 19-21, 21-15, 21-14 defeat.

Menawhile, singles coach Hendrawan, who was in Bukit Kiara for the morning session today, felt that the tournament is a good venue to gauge the current level of the players following the long break.

“This tournament is good for players as they have been out of action since the MCO,” said Hendrawan.

“They seem to be a little off the pace due to them not having any tournaments for the past three to four months. There were also players who were under pressure like Jun Hao who looked uneasy.”

The BAM Invitational Championship is a BAM-organised event following four months of inactivity following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The championship is being held at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM) in Bukit Kiara without spectators – using the ’round robin’ format and divided into two phases.

JUNIORS UP AGAINST SENIORS FOR SAM-100PLUS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019

0

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Aug – S. Kisona (pic), the women’s singles gold medallist at the SEA Games in the Philippines last year, is among the five shortlisted candidates vying for the Athlete of the Year Award at this year’s Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS Awards 2019.

The Negeri Sembilan-born lass certainly made heads turned when she defied the odds to successfully defend Malaysia’s women singles crown at the SEA Games following Goh Jin Wei’s win in 2017 on home soil.

Enroute, Kisona showed her quality when she sidestepped players who were far more experienced and ranked a lot higher including Thailand’s second seeded Nitchaon Jindapol, who was ranked 22nd in the world then.

However, Kisona will be up against a strong company in the chase for the SAM-100PLUS Athlete of the Year Award where she will have to contend with Malaysia’s gymnastic queen Farah Ann Abdul Hadi.

The Metropolitan city of Manila bore witness to the triumph of Farah Ann, who brilliantly won three gold medals at the SEA Games 2019.

Farah went up the podium three times as the winner of the individual, the uneven bars and also the floor events.

The sport of wushu also shone bright in 2019 with Loh Choon How following up his podium finish at last year’s World Championship in Shanghai with a double gold medals at the 29th SEA Games in the Philippines.

The 27-year-old put aside pain to deliver the glitter of two gold medals in the taijiquan and taijijian events.

It has also been a fabulous year for track cyclist, Mohd. Azizulhasni Awang when he took the gold medal in the men’s keirin in the fourth leg of the Track World Cup in New Zealand last year – by beating former world champion Shane Perkins of Russia and Australia’s world champion, Matthew Glaetzer.

Figure skater, Julian Yee has also thrown his name into the hat for the Athlete of the Year Award after successfully defending the gold medal in Manila after his triumph at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games previously.

In the meantime, in the SAM-100PLUS Para Athlete of the Year Award, Sarawak-born Bonnie Bunyau Gustin leads the cast following his gold medal winning feat at the World Powerlifting Championship in Kazakhstan for the Under 65kg category.

But whether his 190kg lift will be enough to crush his opponents, remained to be seen as Bonnie will be up against two archers who are also aiming for the top prize.

S. Suresh made the top of the podium at the World Archery Championship in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands last year while teammate Wiro Anak Julin, the champion at last year’s Asian Archery in Bangkok, Thailand, will also be in the fray.

Completing the list of nominations for the 2019 Para Athlete of the Year Award is Muhd. Ziyad Zolkefli who won the silver medal at the SEA Games in Manila.

The winners of both Athlete of the Year and also Para Athlete of the Year Award will each receive RM 10,000 cash prize and a trophy.

The SAM-100PLUS Awards 2019 is scheduled for 12 August 2020 at the Auditorium of the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.

Other than recognising the achievements of athletes, the SAM-100PLUS Awards will celebrate the sports journalists who will be given the chance to win an overall cash prize of more than RM50,000.

The awards are divided into six categories: – Best News Report (Print Media), Best News Report (Electronic Media), Best News Review (Print Media), Best News Review (Electronic Media), Special Report (Open) and Best Sports Photography.

The overall winner for the sports journalism category will receive the Siebel Award with a cash prize of RM RM 7,000 and a trophy.

The SAM-100PLUS Awards 2019 will be inaugurated by Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, the Minister of Youth and Sports (KBS).

SAARI BROTHERS COULD MAKE A RETURN UNDER NEW COACH ARULSELVARAJ

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Aug – There is hope that hockey’s famous Saari brothers – Faizal and Fitri – could don national colors again under newly appointed men’s national hockey team’s chief coach A. Arulselvaraj.
However, the duo will have to clear certain hurdles in their comeback bid after being dropped from the national squad by former chief coach, Roelant Oltmans when he named the national squad in February for the now postponed Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
Others dropped by the Dutchman were Nabil Fiqri Noor, Joel van Huizen and Shukri Mutalib.
”I will meet them (Faizal (pic left) and Fitri) and have chat. At the same time they need to perform in the Razak Cup competition (scheduled to be held in September),” said Arul when contacted in Dublin, Ireland on Tuesday.
”I will also get data from ISN on sports scientific results of every player’s heart rate and all other info. Apart from that, I will also seek assistance from Amin to get more info on the squad and the players.”
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) announced the appointment of Arulselvaraj after the MHC accepted the Dutchman’s resignation effective August 1.
Three weeks earlier Arulselvaraj, a former international was named as the chief assistant coach.  The two other assistant coaches in the national coaching set-up are Amin Rahim and Nasihin Nubli.
Arul returns to Malaysia on Aug 10 but will have to undergo a two-week quarantine. During Arul’s absence, Amin and Nasihin will handle the current national squad’s training.
The unexpected change of events caught Arul by surprise but he is game for the challenge and his first task is to prepare the team for the Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka, Bangladesh in November.
MHC president, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal announced the appointments at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.

RED EAGLES PROMISED FINANCIAL FLIGHT

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Aug – Last year’s FA Cup champions, Kedah can breathe easy now after new Kedah FA president, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (pic) assured the Red Eagles’ to resolve the team’s financial mess on a ”win-win” situation.
It is probably a birthday present to the Red Eagles who have not been paid their salaries for the past five months from Sanusi who celebrated his 46th birthday on Tuesday (Aug 4).
After months of uncertainty over the non-payment of salaries for five months, the team is finally seeing light at the end of the runner with the FA supremo gave the assurance that the long-overdue March salary for players and team officials will be paid by August 15.
The salary arrears from April to July will be worked out through negotiations between the players, officials, and the KFA management.
Sanusi, who is also the Kedah Menteri Besar, also revealed that the outstanding Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Inland Revenue Board (IRB) stands at RM3.8 million will have to be settled fast.
A Special Finance Committee will be formed soon to tackle the financial mess that rocked Kedah football – sending shock waves in the football fraternity as the northern state had no previous case of salary arrears.
”It will be a win-win situation for all the parties concerned and the best method will be worked out through negotiations with the KFA management,” said Sanusi in a statement released on Tuesday after the eighth KFA Executive meeting for 2018-2022 season in Alor Setar on Monday.
It was also revealed that the Kedah’s bloated squad of 48 individuals, including players and team officials, contributed towards the financial constraints.
For the remainder of the 2020 season, Kedah needs a minimum of RM25 million for the team that is currently seventh in the Super League with four points after four matches before the league was suspended on March 16 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, former international and Kedah player, Radhi Mat Din, who was recently elected as KFA vice-president, was named the team’s management chairman.
Kedah has lined up a number of friendlies matches against Selangor and Perak before the team resumes its Super League campaign with an away match against Police at the KL Football Stadium in Cheras on Aug 27.
The Red Eagles will be at home to Petaling Jaya City FC on Sept 2 before traveling to the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium for the match against Felda United (Sept 6) and it will be another home match when they play Sabah on Sept 9.

FAM PUTS KELANTAN FOOTBALL IN A REAL MESS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Aug – The latest developments leave a big question mark on Kelantan football and the once powerhouse of the game in the country is not getting any mercy from the powers in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
The national football governing body handed Kelantan a three-point deduction from the league which sent the Red Warriors plunging to 10th position in the 12-team Premier League with only one point for failing to settle their third installment of salary arrears.
Kelantan missed paying their third installment that was due on July 30 and the FAM has come down hard on the Red Warriors who paid the first two installments on January 31 and February 27.
In another development, the FAM club licensing First Instance Body (FIB) also took a hard stand that Kelantan will have to settle their outstanding salary arrears of players and team officials by August 31 to compete in next year’s M-League.
If the Red warriors fail to do that, it will not get the license to compete in next year’s M-League as it continues to grapple with financial issues apart from players abandoning the team due to non-payment of salaries running into five months.
Korean import Kang Seun-jo (pic) has already left the team to join Gyeongnam FC in the Korean League.
On the local front two defenders, Wan Afiq Kasbi and Afiq Azwan have also thrown in their quit letters over the non-payment of salaries. It could be the demise of the East Coast state on the local football front.
If there is any consolation Kelantan has a game in hand when the league resumes on Aug 26.
The least Kelantan can do now is to submit a settlement plan which is agreeable by the players and officials.
The same goes for arrears with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) plus Social Security Organisation (Socso).

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR MALAYSIA IN THOMAS & UBER CUP FINALS DRAW

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Aug – It was mixed fortunes for Malaysia when the Badminton World Federation released the draw for the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals on Aug 3 (Monday).
The men’s team got themselves a favorable draw in the Thomas Cup Finals.
Malaysia, winners of the Thomas Cup five times in 1949, 1952, 1955, 1967 and 1992 – was drawn in Group A together with perennial foes Indonesia for a company together European hopefuls England and Holland.
However, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage, Malaysia should battle Indonesia for a place to stay alive but at the same time should not underrate the English and the Dutch in the group stage.
Indonesia has stamped its supremacy over the Malaysians in recent times and as recent as February this year, won the Asian Team title with a 3-1 win at the final in Manila.
Indonesia also won the SEA Games men’s team gold also in Manila in December last year.
In the Uber Cup Finals draw Malaysia have a tough, tough draw in Group B with three-time champions Indonesia, and two-time runners-up South Korea standing in the way for a top-two place. The other team in the group is minnows Australia.
Malaysian women have never won the women’s team event and it is another tough road in the Finals which will be held in the Danish city of Aarhus from Oct 3-11. The finals were postponed from May due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We have a favorable draw in the Thomas Cup…but the same cannot be said for the Uber Cup,” said Badminton of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Wong Choong Hann.
“Still, we will not write off our chances in the Uber Cup although we have a better chance in the Thomas Cup. Anything can happen in the Uber Cup and if we play our cards right our chances are as good as others but we will have to be at our best.”
