VIETNAM A SERIOUS THREAT IN SEA GAMES SEPAK TAKRAW

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Aug – Sepak Takraw has been traditionally dominated by powerhouses like Thailand and Malaysia in the biennial SEA Games but Vietnam – host for the 31st edition next year – has emerged as a serious medal contender.
The warning comes from the president of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM), Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail (pic below).
The strong warning from Ahmad Ismail revealed Vietnam will be a threat, both, in the men’s and women’s events. According to Ahmad Ismail, the host nation is so serious in winning a medal next year that their men’s and women’s teams have been in training even during the Coronavirus pandemic.
After a highly glorious outing in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2017 where Malaysia won two golds, three silvers, and six bronze, the national team failed to strike gold in Manila and could only manage two silver and a bronze. The silvers were in the men’s regu and team regu while women’s regu won the bronze.
According to Ahmad Ismail, Vietnam has proposed to hold eight events but they have yet to finalize them.
“The Vietnam men’s team will pose a serious challenge to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia and have shown steady improvement in their game. Their women’s team is also a serious medal contender,” added Ahmad Ismail.

The Thomas and Uber Cup finals are scheduled to be held in the city of Aarhus, in Denmark from October 3-11.
For Vitidsarn it was his second big scalp in the national meet after he dumped No 2 seed and defending champion Sitthikom Thamasin in the semi-finals.

The men’s doubles up and coming Supak Jomkoh teamed up with Kittinupong Kedren to clinch the title with a 21-17, 21-13 win over Nattapat Trynkajee-Danupat Viriyangkoon.

For Aimsaard sisters Nantakorn and Benyapa it was sheer joy when they came out 12-21, 21-17, 21-17 winners over Nitchaon Jindapol-Rawinda Prajongjai.
Badminton Association of Thailand president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul who was voted in for a fourth term last week described the national meet as a huge success.
“We have new champions in every category. This augurs well for badminton in Thailand. There is no shortage of talent in the country,” said Khunying Patama.

HAFIZH SYAHRIN READY TO RACE THIS WEEKEND

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Aug – After escaping serious injury in a scary nasty crash on Sunday during the Austrian Grand Prix, Malaysian Moto2 rider, Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah is game to race again this weekend if he gets medical clearance.
The 26-year-old Malaysian suffered the crash in the first round at the Red Bull Ring Circuit in Spielberg, Austria but is already thinking of the next race – the Styria GP which will be held at the same venue this weekend.
Hafizh, who rides for Inde Aspar Team, glad that the medical team confirmed he did not sustain any serious injuries in the crash and gave the thumbs-up sign – obviously delighted with the good news on his injuries.
“However, I still feel the pain in both legs. The left leg hurts. I am using crutches to help my movement,” said Hafizh in a text message.
“I hope to recover soon and hopefully I can ride this weekend (in the Styria GP, which is scheduled for Aug 23).
In the incident, Hafizh crashed at full speed into leader Ena Bastianini’s bike that was lying in the middle of the track after the Italian had crashed at the first curve in the first lap. The Italian dons Italtran Racing Team colors.
Hafizh hit the machine at full speed that sent him through the air while the bike was smashed into pieces.
“I consider my lucky…extremely lucky. It was a horrific crash,” added Hafizh who finished top ten in his first two outings – sixth in the Spanish GP and ninth in the Czech Republic GP.

PORTAL PELANCONGAN TEMPATAN JIMATKAN RM8 BILION

Kenneth Oh Soon Meng, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Olabees Sdn. Bhd.

HOTELS BRACE UP TO WEATHER THE STORM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 – The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) was hoping for a more direct assistance and grants rather than loan, as such loans would eventually draw businesses into deeper debt.

“However, the industry understands Government constraints when it comes to funds and the Government needs to look at overall economy and not just tourism,” said MAH’s Chief Executive Officer, Yap Lip Seng when contacted today.

MAH’s Chief Executive Officer, Yap Lip Seng
He was responding to the announcement by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Sri Nancy Shukri who recently said that the tourism sector’s financing scheme worth RM1 billion under the National Economic Recovery Plan or Penjana is now open for applications.
“We believe the majority of our members will attempt to apply for the funds due to the attractive low interest rates,” said Yap adding that the financing will allow industry stakeholders to either fulfil loan obligations or support operations and manpower costs while awaiting economic recovery.
He said that the long awaited financing scheme is seen as a temporary solution for tourism stakeholders to weather through the storm given the current situation.
According to him, stakeholders are having difficulties managing cash flow in reopening and restarting operations given the limited sources of revenue. At the same time operators are unable to completely cease operations and risk exiting the industry permanently.
Yap said, the Covid-19 pandemic had heavily impacted everyone and not just SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises). Larger hotels and resorts had had difficulties in past months due to lack of assistance in comparison with SMEs, most were forced to take drastic actions including reducing manpower and consolidating resources for efficiency and better productivity.
“Many had also resorted to re-assigning reserves for operational purposes rather than CAPEX (capital expenditure) or reinvestments,” he added.
When asked the way forward for its members now, Yap said that the industry is generally preparing for recovery and with the commencement of domestic tourism, it also saw reasonable pick up of business at selected destinations driven by pent up demand by locals.
“Hygiene and safety are the main concerns for both travellers and operators and this involves additional costs and investments. MAH had also introduces the Clean and Safe Malaysia hygiene and safety label, benefiting hotels that are certified,” he said.
On the average occupancy rate, Yap said, MAH gathered the average occupancy of hotels in Malaysia is approximately 33% with resort and beach destinations picking up faster, and main cities and states such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Sabah still low with average occupancy between 12-20%.
According to him, based on records of announcements made by the hotels, approximately 30 hotels throughout Malaysia are still close for various reasons including refurbishments and some planning to re-open by the end of the year.
MAH has approximately 1,000 members spread across 13 chapters (states) in Malaysia.

SELANGOR ON TRACK AS IFEDAYO RETURNS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 14 Aug – Spaniard hitman Rufino Segovia hit a brace while Sean Selvaraj scored one in Selangor’s 3-0 win over Premier League outfit Negri Sembilan in a friendly match played at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Wednesday.
If the win was heartwarming for Selangor head coach, B. Sathianathan, the good news is the return of Nigerian striker, Ifedayo Olusegun.
Ifedayo returned last week from Lagos and is currently under quarantine in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
With a tight schedule for the league which resumes on Aug 26, Sathianathan fielded a team from his squad of 25, knowing that he will not be able to count on his first team.
”With the current situation, there is no such thing as first team or reserves. Every member of the squad will have a role to play and deliver when called upon as we are allowed to make five changes during a match.
”’It will be very taxing on the team right from the start when we play PJ City in the opening match not forgetting the injuries that can happen,” said Sathianathan (pic left).
The Red Giants will face Petaling Jaya City FC at their new ‘home venue’ which is the UiTM FC Stadium in Shah Alam on Aug 27. Selangor’s famed home venue – Stadium Shah Alam – is currently undergoing massive renovations and upgrading and is expected to be ready only in 2022.
”It was heartening to see a commendable effort from those who played against Negri (Sembilan). I gave the players a chance to go and get a feel of what to expect when the league resumes,” added Sathianathan.
Sathianathan is also keeping a close tab on Ifedayo’s progress in training which has been given to him and the Nigerian has not let him down. ”He (Ifedayo) is very professional and has been diligently following our training schedule.”
After PJ City, the Red Giants face Sabah on Sept 1 followed by a match against Melaka United at home on Sept 5.
The cruncher is against six-time Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) away on Sept 9.
Selangor’s other matches are against UiTM and Police on Sept 14 and 19 respectively.

ARULSELVARAJ’S SACRIFICES AND PASSION FOR HOCKEY

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 14 Aug – Newly appointed national men’s hockey team chief coach, A. Arulselvaraj is holed up in a five-star hotel in the heart of the city to serve a mandatory two-week quarantine after arriving in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday.
Separated by nearly 11,000km from his loving family in Dublin, Ireland, the former international was appointed to the hot seat after Dutchman, Roelant Oltmans quit the post on July 31 – just two weeks after the Johorean was named as the chief assistant coach.
Arul’s hot seat is for a two year period but the former national junior coach is all fired up to take up the challenge after the Dutchman left for home with some unpleasant remarks on the standard of hockey in Malaysia.
The bizarre turn of events took Arul and many others by surprise although the writing was on the wall for Oltman that it is only a matter of time for him to leave when he failed miserably in his mission to take Malaysia to the Tokyo Olympics now postponed to next year because of the pandemic.
”Hockey has been my passion. Feel good and excited about my new responsibilities. However, it’s hard work with lot of sacrifices to be made on the personal front,” says Arul whose family resides in Dublin.
Arul is married to former international athlete K. Soloseeni, 47, who hails from Seremban. The couple has three daughters – Tharine, 17, Erin Mridula, 11 and Deepa 9.
However, Arul was quick to point out that being away from his family is something he has got used to.
It was the same when he had coaching stints in South Africa and Ireland before his family joined him.
”The difference now is the kids are growing up. I have a wonderful wife who is capable of handling a family matter knowing that my presence will be missed during special occasions and I will be less available in person,” said Arul when commenting on the sacrifices.
He has found courage in pursuit of a life of real fulfillment to complete his unfinished job.
The lanky left-back, Arul comes with a wealth of experience and was also the national head coach for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
As the head coach of the National Junior team, his last assignment was the 2015 Junior Asia Cup in Kuantan, Pahang.

KEDAH PLAYERS ‘CELEBRATE’ THEIR FIRST SALARY IN FIVE MONTHS

0

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Aug – After enduring nightmarish five months without pay, Kedah players were finally paid a month’s salary which was credited into their accounts on Tuesday – lifting some of the gloom in the Red Eagles camp before the M-League resumes on Aug 26.

The salary credited into the accounts of the players and team officials like coaches is for the month of July.
However, question marks remain on when the salaries for the months of March, April, May, and June will be paid.
Kedah FA President, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (pic left), who is also the Menteri Besar, however, has promised to resolve the remaining salary dues in a “win-win” situation soon, stressing that the arrears will not be carried forward to next year.

“That’s my promise,” he said.

Speaking at a dinner hosted by him for the team at his official residence Seri Mentaloon in Alor Setar, Sanusi added: ”I give my guarantee that the outstanding issues will be resolved this season.

”We do not want to carry the arrears into next season. I also apologize on behalf of the old and the new management for the salary arrears. Through negotiations, we have also worked a deal on Kedah FA’s outstanding EPF (Employees Provident Fund) contributions.”
According to Sanusi the figures for the arrears to the EPF and the Inland Revenue Board is RM3.8 million.
Kedah, winners of the FA Cup last year, sent shock waves in the football fraternity when news came out that the players have not been their salaries for this year.
It came to a stage when Kedah’s Singaporean coach Aidil Sharin Shak had to fork out his own money, reportedly to the tune of RM20,000, to help tide things over during the team’s training due to the financial mess.
For the remainder of the 2020 season, Kedah needs a minimum of RM25 million for the team that is currently seventh in the Super League with four points after four matches before the league was suspended on March 16 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Kedah has lined up a number of friendlies matches against Selangor and Perak before the team resumes its Super League campaign with an away match against Police at the KL Football Stadium in Cheras on Aug 27.
The Red Eagles will be at home to Petaling Jaya City FC on Sept 2 before traveling to the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium for the match against Felda United (Sept 6) and it will be another home match when they play Sabah on Sept 9.
