JOHOR BAHRU, 7 July – This Thursday could bring good news for Malaysian football when it will be decided if the M-League could be resumed sooner than expected.
Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (pic standing center) gave broad hints of the M-League resuming, as Malaysia recently continued to register single digit new Coronavirus cases in the country.
The M-League was suspended after the federal government’s movement control order (MCO) to check the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The last M-League matches were played on March 16 before taking a week-long break for international assignments. The pandemic, however, changed the whole scenario.
Reezal is confident that the authorities will give the green light for the resumption of the M-League.
Most of the teams have already resumed non-contact training and contact training is expected to begin on July 16.
The minister was speaking at a press conference at the Larkin Arena Aquatic Centre in Johor Bahru on Tuesday.
He also visited several other venues for Sukma Johor 2020 which have been postponed to March next year due to the pandemic.
”It has been a very disciplined approach on all fronts to check the pandemic. Over recent days, it has been single-digit cases without deaths. This gives us confidence that there will be a positive outcome on Thursday.
“With Malaysia’s Covid-19 pandemic well contained, it is a good sign for sporting events and football is all set to resume its activities, especially the M-League,” said Reezal.
“Still, the NSC (National Sports Council) holds the final decision. Let us hope for a positive outcome at the meeting.”
The meeting will be chaired by senior minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who is also the defense minister.
