PETALING JAYA, Sept 7 – This Friday’s top-of-the-table clash between leaders Sarawak United and second placed Negeri Sembilan at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras is D-Day for both teams in the Premier League title.
Sarawak United needs only a draw to win the title while Negeri Sembilan must win to bag the title.
Both teams have already won promotion to the elite Super League next season.
After 18 matches, the Golden Hornbills are on top with 37 points with a healthy 36-12 goal difference against second placed Negeri Sembilan’s 35 points and a 28-14 goal tally.
On Tuesday at the Pasir Gudang Stadium, Sarawak United slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kuching City FC after conceding a late goal. Substitute Alif Hassan netted the winner in the 84th minute.
It was a cruel blow for the Golden Hornbills when the midfielder’s attempt hit a defender and looped into the left corner – catching goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee off guard.
”We had our chances but could not score and this made the difference. At times footballing luck decides the outcome of football matches,” said Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan.
Sarawak United also found Kuching City FC goalkeeper Iqbal Suhaimi a stumbling block in the afternoon match.
