KUALA LUMPUR, 17 July – Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Senator Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Amad Kamal will not have a say or interfere in the selection of the National Under-19 football team.
The Senator’s younger brother, United States-based Wan Ahmad Kuzri, 18, is in town to vie for a place in the Malaysian team for the AFC Under-19 Championships schedule to be held in Uzbekistan from October 14-31.
The Asian Championships is also the qualifier for the Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
Wan Kuzri started training with the National Under-19 squad on Thursday after coming through a two-week quarantine and swab-tests for Covid-19 showed negative results.
“Yes, he is my younger brother. It stops at that. There will be no interference from me in the team selection. If he makes the team it will be solely on merit. I will not have a say in the team selection.
“It is left to the coach (Brad Maloney) and the FAM to do the job. Kuzri will have no advantage whatsoever just because he is my brother,” said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal at the Sepang International Circuit on Friday.
Wan Kuzri is based at the St. Louis Football Academy in the United States and has received encouragement from another footballing brother Wan Kuzain.
Describing himself as a ‘creative player who wants to help the team score and create goals’, is determined to find himself a place in the national team to the AFC Under-19 Championships.
