WHEN THE COPS CAME CALLING FOR SARAWAK UNITED

0
KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 – It was a night to forget for Premier League leaders Sarawak United at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Friday as they crashed to a shocking 2-0 defeat to strugglers Police – Sarawak United’s first defeat in seven matches.
Already hit by injuries to South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon and Brazilian striker Sandro Mendonca who were forced to sit out the Police match, the Golden Hornbills were further crippled when Australian defender Tayor Regan had to leave the field with a bad ankle injury minutes into the game.
“We fell apart when Regan was forced to leave the field. With that, we lost shape and our normal game disappeared, losing our focus along the way. We struggled and did not play our normal game.
“However, nothing is to be taken away from Police. They played well and took the game to us. Police were more organised and took the opportunities well,” said Elavarasan on his team’s defeat.
”In football, we have to be prepared for such situations. Injuries are part and parcel of the game. The defeat hurts but we have to move on and look forward to the next match.”
The tide turned for Police on the hour mark when Lazarus Kaimbi scored from the penalty spot after Tommy Mawat felled Alif Naquiddin Shouffi inside the box. Nabil Ahmad Lapti made it 2-0 after 87 minutes off a counter-attack.
Despite the defeat, Sarawak United remains on the top of the league standings with 16 points from seven matches.
Johor Darul Takzim II and Negeri Sembilan are in second and third place respectively, with 14 points each, separated by goal difference.
For Police, it is only their second win in nine matches and moved up to the eighth position with eight points.

SARAWAK UNITED WEAKENED BY INJURIES FOR POLICE MATCH

0
KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 – South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon and Brazilian forward Sandro Mendonca are out of the team when leaders Sarawak United face lowly Police at Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka in Friday’s Premier League match.
The duo are kayoed after picking up the injuries when Sarawak United played FAM-MSN Project in their last match at the same venue last weekend.
The Golden Hornbills registered a massive 7-1 win to take over as the new leaders of the second-tier league.
”The two have not recovered from their injuries and I am not taking the risk of playing them against Police.
“I don’t want them to aggravate their injuries as I need them for coming matches,” said Elavarasan during the team’s training session at the Hang Tuah Stadium.
After the match against Police, Sarawak United has an important away match against strong challengers Negri Sembilan at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi. This is on April 24.
For the match against Police, Sarawak United, however, will have the services of Australian defender Taylor Regan, Nigerian hitman Uche Agba and international Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.
”Every player is a pillar in the team. However, who plays in the first team is done on merit. A lot of factors have to be taken into account and match strategies,” added Elavarasan after confirming that the Chang-hoon and Sandro are out of the team.
In the same breath, Elavarasan does not want any of his players to be “overconfident” in any match, adding that “no match is won or lost till the final whistle is blown.”
Agba leading scorer in the Premier League with eight goals. He scored four against FAM-MSN Project.

WAS IT A POLITICAL MILEAGE STUNT?

0
KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 – Questions are being asked if it was a well-scripted ‘sandiwara’ script for political mileage after Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican announced that the national football squad will get their Covid-19 vaccination on April 19 (Monday).
It was a U-turn within 48 hours after the minister had announced on Wednesday (April 13) that his ministry cannot give a guarantee that the Harimau Malaya squad will receive their Covid-19 jabs before traveling to the Middle East.
For a team that carries the nation’s flag with pride and dignity with the hope of advancing from the qualifiers in Group G, it deserves to be given better treatment…not second class treatment before the U-turn.
Do not politicize sports for political mileage which is a norm in Malaysia. Everyone knows that politicians thrive on the massive publicity in sports – a nd there is no denying that politicians love to get into the thick of everything in sports, more so when there is SUCCESS.
For the record, Malaysia is well placed to stay in contention. Malaysia is currently in second place with nine points after Vietnam (11 points) after five matches. Thailand is third on eight points, and UAE, with a match in hand, is on six points. Indonesia is at the bottom without a point.
On Thursday, it was a different tune from the minister with a positive note. It is a welcome gesture from the minister but in the first place, he should have worked out a better plan knowing that Harimau Malaya is racing against time in preparations.
Harimau Malaya should have been given priority and placed into the first group of national athletes and not into the wait and see category.
The Sports Ministry should have worked things out with Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, himself a former sports minister.
Harimau Malaya is scheduled to leave for Dubai on May 19 and play two friendly matches there against Kuwait and Bahrain before flying to the United Arab Emirates.
The remaining matches in  World Cup 2022/Asia Cup 2023 qualifiers from Group G will be played on a carnival basis in the UAE.
Malaysia will face the UAE on June 3, Vietnam (June 11), and Thailand (June 15). The matches will be played on a carnival basis in the UAE.

SARAWAK UNITED WARY OF POLICE

0
KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 – Premier League leader Sarawak United is not getting carried away with their place at the top of the league with an unbeaten record, and neither are the Golden Hornbills resting on their laurels with the 7-1 win over FAM-MSN Project last Saturday.
More so when they face lowly Police in their next match at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Melaka in their next match this Friday.
Police look like easy meat for the Golden Hornbills but not for head coach E. Elavarasan.
Elavarasan is concerned with injuries to his South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon (pic left) and Brazilian Sandro Mendonca.
The duo picked up the injuries against FAM-MSN Project in the big win – the biggest score registered in the M-League so far this season.
In that match, Nigerian striker Uche Agba scored four goals, which he dedicated to his late mother, who passed away back home in Nigeria last Monday. Agba took his personal tally to eight and is the leading scorer in the Premier League for now.
For Elavarasan the team’s ”journey has just begun” with several changes to the team’s training sessions during Ramadhan as matches during the Holy Month will be played at 10 pm. Training sessions will now be held at 10 pm.
Sarawak United has set a hot pace in the Premier League this season after finishing 10th last year and is currently on top with 16 points from six matches.
After Police, the East Malaysian outfit will be away to Negri Sembilan, who slipped to third in the league standings with 14 points, the same as second-placed JDT II but separated by goal difference.
”Just like any other teams, Police is dangerous. We treat all teams with respect and in football, anything can happen. Police have a new coach (Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail), who will have his own strategies change the team’s fortunes.
“This is where danger lurks. I have drilled this into my players. We cannot afford to waste scoring chances. At the same time I am not putting any extra pressure on my players,” said Elavarasan.
Police are 10th in the league standings with five points after eight matches.

PERAK’S OFF FIELD WOES MAKE SELANGOR LOOK GOOD

0
PETALING JAYA, April 11 – Beleaguered Perak FC crashed to their fourth defeat in eight matches, allowing Selangor a 3-1 win at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday, which allowed the Red Giants some breathing space in the Super League.
Rocked by off-field problems, including late salaries for players and officials alike, who are now not sure of what holds for them in their respective careers in the team – thanks to political interference in the team’s management. Perak is now fast becoming easy meat for their rivals.
This was evident against Selangor who was made to look good despite their much-criticised German football DNA under coach Karsten Neitzel.
Nigerian hitman Ifedayo Olusegun helped himself to a hat-trick with strikes in the eighth, 31st (penalty), and 71st minutes. Perak’s consolation goal was scored by Farid Khazali deep into added time.
Melaka United earned three precious points against table proppers UiTM FC at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam. Goals by Sony Norde (36th), Stefan Nikolic (60th) and S. Kumaahran (65th) saw Melaka United in ninth place on seven points. For the record Melaka had three points deducted for late payment of overdue salaries.
Seven-time Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) scored three first-half goals to tame Petaling Jaya City FC 3-0 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru to tighten their grip at the top with 20 points from eight matches.
New Brazilian signing Bergson da Silva hit a brace after Argentine Gonzalo Cabrera opened the flood gates with a second minute header.
Kedah FC is in second place on 16 points despite a 2-1 defeat at home to Terengganu FC on Friday. Terengganu is in third spot with 15 points.

‘THIS IS FOR YOU MAMA’ – UCHE AGBA

0
PETALING JAYA, April 10 – Nigerian hitman Uche Agba plundered four goals as Sarawak United powered to a 7-1 win over FAM-MSN Project in a Premier League match and dedicated the goals to his late mother who passed away last week.
It was a heartwarming performance by the 34-year-old who was not on the list due to his mother’s sudden demise for the midweek match against Selangor 2 at Selayang, which was postponed due to a thunderstorm.
On Saturday night Agba put his grief aside and delivered in the massive win which took Sarawak United to the top of the league standings with 16 points after six matches. Sarawak United also has a game in hand over second-placed Negeri Sembilan, who suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of Kelantan United at home on Friday.
”I dedicate the four goals by me and Sarawak United’s big win to my late Mama. She has been my inspiration in my football career. I miss her very much but I am sure she is happy for me,” said Ugba after the win.
The four goals took Agba’s tally to eight so this season. Head coach E. Elavarasan, however, is not getting carried away by the hot pace set by the Golden Hornbills. Instead, he is aware that Sarawak United is now the “target” of their rivals.
While celebrating the win, which kept Sarawak United unbeaten after six matches, there was a tinge of disappointment for the East Malaysian outfit when it conceded its first goal this season.
Goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee, who had kept a clean sheet in the first five matches, was beaten by a penalty scored by Azhad Harraz Azman in the 57th minute.
Agba’s four goals came in the 15h, 17th, 30th, and 61st minutes. The other goalscorers for Sarawak United were S. Chanturu (45th), Abdul Rahim Razak (82nd), and Tommy Mawat (88th).
The Golden Hornbills’ next face Police, Elavarasan, however, is concerned with injuries picked up by his South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon and Brazilian Sandro Mendonca.
”We will see the extent of their injuries when we return to Kuala Lumpur. Overall, I am pleased with the performance of the team. The league will only get tougher, and we have to be well prepared for the tight schedule during the fasting month,” said Elavarasan.
”I have nothing but praise for Uche. He is still grieving his mother’s death, but as a true professional, he was ready to play for the team and delivered on the field. I am happy for him.”

KELANTAN UNITED SHATTERS N.SEMBILAN’S UNBEATEN RECORD

0
PETALING JAYA, April 9 – Kelantan United pulled off a stunning 3-2 win over previously unbeaten Negeri Sembilan at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi in a Premier League match played on Friday.
Negeri also saw red in their defeat when Saiful Ridzuan was sent off for an early shower for a second bookable offense just before the halftime break.
It is Negeri’s first defeat in seven matches but despite the defeat remained on top of the league standings with 14 points. However, it could change when second-placed JDT II and third-placed Sarawak, with 13 points each play their matches on Saturday. For the record, JDT II and Sarawak United have played six and five matches respectively.
Negeri took a first-minute lead through a header by former international Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak planted home powerful header past Kelantan United keeper Fikri Che Soh from a long ball by Korean midfielder Bae Beom-geun.
However, Kelantan United hitback through Gambian striker Alfusainey Gassama to draw level in the 20t minute.
The lanky Gassama put the East Coast outfit 2-1 up in the 51st minute but 10-man Negeri made it 2-2 through their Cameroon hitman Alain Thierry Akono eight minutes later.
Hariz Kamarudin turned hero for Kelantan United when his freekick from outside the box took a deflection off the wall and hit the back of the Negeri net in 64thh minute for the winner.
