TOUGH FOR MALAYSIA DESPITE DEPLETED FIELD IN HSBC BWF WORLD TOUR FINALS 2020

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 – Some of the big names in badminton will not be there but it does not make it any easier for Malaysian shuttlers in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2020 which begin at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on Wednesday.
Shuttlers from China and Japan will not feature in the season-ending finale which offers a whopping USD1.5 million in prize money.
To be eligible and qualify to compete in the World Tour Finals it was mandatory to play in the recent Yonex Thailand Open and Toyota Thailand Open which played at the same venue over the last two weeks.
Malaysia will have representatives in four categories except for the women’s singles.
In the men’s singles is Lee Zii Jia (pic left) with two pairs in the men’s doubles (Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and On Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi) and two in the women’s doubles (Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen) while Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie will battle in the mixed doubles.
Despite the big names missing, it will still an uphill task for the Malaysian hopes after their mediocre performance in the Yonex Thailand Open and the Toyota Thailand Open.
Malaysia could only win the runners-up spot in both the tournaments and this was in the men’s doubles.
Professionals Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong reached the final in the Yonex Thailand Open while Aaron-Wooi Yik in the Toyota Thailand Open.
Both pairs lost to Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei who will be hot favorites in the World Tour Finals.
Much will also depend on the draw which will be conducted in Bangkok on Tuesday but Malaysians need to pull up their socks in overall performance if they want to make good in the grand finale.
Zii Jia was targetted to reach the semi-finals in the two tournaments in Thailand but he was a flop – exiting in the quarter-finals in the Yonex and crashed in the first round in the following tournament (Toyota).
Whether Zii Jia is in the right frame of mind after two disappointments in Bangkok the 23-year Kedahan needs solid mental strength and focus in his game if he wants to proceed beyond the group stages.
Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen who won back-to-back tournaments in Bangkok will once again start as the hot-favorite in the men’s singles while Spain’s Carolina Marin has shown all-round superiority in winning both titles in the Thai tournaments.
Current world number one Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei who was at the losing end in both tournaments is wounded after losing both finals to the lanky Spaniard.
Ratchanok Intanon

In Ratcanok Intanon the host can count on the former world No 1 to deliver.

The same goes for the rest of the Malaysian hopes and it is a matter of how fast they can recover and workout their shortcomings. There is only so much the coaches can do in training and the rest is left to the players to deliver on courts.
Hopefully, the Malaysian contenders can pull off some surprises and show that there is plenty of badminton in them.
Last but not least Zii Jia and company, hopefully, would not use the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse for not being able to deliver.

NO GLORY IN BANGKOK AS AARON CHIA-WOOI YIK FALL IN THE FINAL YET AGAIN

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 – The men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and the mixed doubles champions in last week’s Yonex Thailand Open tasted victory again at the Toyota Thailand Open Super 1000 which ended in Bangkok on Sunday (Jan 24).
Viktor Axelsen (men’s singles) Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin (men’s doubles), Carolina Marin (women’s singles), and Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai (mixed doubles) repeated their success to strike rich and doubled their earnings at the end of the Toyota Thailand Open in Bangkok on Sunday.
However, for Malaysia, it was another week without winners in the two tournaments with each tournament offering USD1 million in prize money.
It was the same old story – falling at the final hurdle – as Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik fell tamely to Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei in the men’s doubles final at Impact Arena, Bangkok, in the Toyota Thailand Open.
The Malaysian number one pair ranked No. 8 in the world succumbed to a straight game 13-21, 18-21 defeat in only 35 minutes.
It was their third defeat to the Taiwanese who also won their previous two encounters in rubber games. Much was expected from Aaron-Wooi Yik but the Malaysians crumbled against the Taiwanese onslaught.
If there is any consolation in the defeat the Malaysians became USD35,000 richer for their efforts. The champions took home USD74,000 in prize money.
It has been a remarkable two weeks of competition in Bangkok for Lee Yang-Chi-Lin who also won last week’s Yonex Thailand Open at the same venue beating Malaysian professionals Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the final.
This is the second time Aaron-Wooi Yik finished runners-up in a Super 1000 tournament after the Yonex All-England Championships in 2019.
Meanwhile, it was also back-to-back wins for Denmark’s former world champion Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles. This time he demolished compatriot Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in a lop-sided final for a 21-11, 21-7 win and the USD70,000 prize money that came with the title. Last week he defeated Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong China in the final.
In the women’s singles final it was another heartbreak for current world number one Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. The 26-year-old again failed to stop Spain’s world number six Carolina Marin in a repeat of last week’s final.
The 27-year-old Olympic champion walked away with a 21-19, 21-17 win in 48 minutes for the winner’s purse of USD70,000 with Tzu Ying taking home USD34,000 for her efforts. In last week’s final Marin won 21-9, 21-16.
Seung Chan being treated by the medical team after complaining of ankle pain during the women’s doubles final match.
The women’s doubles final was an all-Korean affair with fourth seeds Kim So Yeong-Kong Yee Hong winning their first Super 1000 title. They defeated compatriots and third seeds Lee So Hee-Shin Seung Chan 21-18, 21-19 in a 56-minute thriller.
For Thailand, there was a cheer from their top mixed doubles pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai when the number one seeds gunned down Seo Seung Jae-Chae YuJung 21-16, 22-20 for their second title in two weeks.

SI GENIT CINTA MOTOSIKAL (Harian Metro April 2020)

0

AARON CHIA-WOOI YIK IN TOYOTA THAILAND OPEN 2021 FINAL

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 – They were a disappointment last week with a first-round defeat but Malaysia’s top doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have bounced back in style when they stormed into the final of the Toyota Thailand Open in Bangkok on Saturday.
The Malaysians gave an inspiring performance in the semi-finals to stop the hard-hitting Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty for a 21-18, 21-18 win in 35 minutes and take a crack at their first Super 1000 title.
In Sunday’s final the Malaysians will face last week’s champions and sixth seeds Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei who defeated reigning world champions and second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia. The Indonesians ranked No 2 in the world lost 21-14, 20-22, 12-21.
For Aaron-Wooi Yik this is their second Super 1000 final after finishing runners-up to Ahsan-Hendra in the 2019 All-England Championships.
It has been a remarkable week for Aaron-Wooi Yik who crashed out in the first round last week – losing to Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong. They made up for that defeat by beating V Shem-Wee Kiong in the quarter-finals in the Toyota Thailand Open.
The final also allows Aaron-Wooi Yik to achieve where V Shem-Wee Kiong failed last week. The Malaysian professionals lost the Yonex Thailand Open final 16-21, 23-21, 19-21.
”It has been a good week for us and we have worked out our shortcomings. This time around we have been playing with more confidence and we are fully focused on the final,” said Aaron.
Malaysia’s hopes of the final in the women’s doubles ended with the defeat to Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Men Yean – suffering a 17-21, 6-21 defeat to Korean fourth seeds Kim So-yeong-Kong Hee Yong.
In the mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah See Yee fell to a 21-9, 21-16 defeat to Korean fourth seeds Seo Seung Jae-Chae YuJung. The duo had defeated sixth seeds Hafiz Faizal-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in the quarter-finals.
The women’s singles final will be a repeat of last week with top-ranked and top seed Tai Tzu Ying taking on Spain’s reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin for the title.
Tzu Ying broke the hearts of the home supporters when she edged Ratchanok Intanon in a 59-minute three-game thriller 12-21, 21-12, 23-21 while Marin roared to a 21-19, 21-15 win over 18-year-old Korean An Se Young.
Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, the world number four, defeated world number two Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-15 in 51 minutes. The Dane also won last week’s title.
It will be an all-Denmark men’s final after 36-year-old Hans Kristian Vittinghus defeated his 23-year-old compatriot Anders Antonsen (No 3 seed)  21-19, 21-8 for a fairy tale run in the tournament after he was promoted from the reserves list.
Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai put themselves in line for their second successive mixed doubles title. In the semis, the Thai top seeds beat India’s Satwiksairaj-Ashwini Ponnappa 22-20, 18-21, 21-12.

MALAYSIA IN LAST FOUR IN THE MEN’S, WOMEN’S AND MIXED DOUBLES AT TOYOTA THAILAND OPEN 2021

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 – It was a painful exit for fifth seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the Super 1000 Toyota Thailand Open on a day when it was bittersweet for Malaysian shuttlers in the quarter-finals at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on Friday.
In the men’s doubles all-Malaysian tie professionals Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, runners-up at last week’s Yonex Thailand Open at the same venue, bowed out to compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in a revenge match.
V Shem-Wee Kiong had beaten Aaron-Wooi Yik in the first round then could not sustain their momentum as the national number one pair dumped the Rio Olympics silver medallists in straight games 21-16, 21-13 within 35 minutes.
Aaron-Wooi Yik will face India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy who defeated another Malaysian pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-18, 24-22 in their quarter-final tie.

In the semi-finals, on Saturday the Malaysians will be up against the fourth-seeded Korean pair of Kim So Yeong-Kong Hee Yong – 21-17, 21-13 winners over Thai seventh seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajonjai.
Korea’s Lee So Hee-Shin Seung Chan (No 3 seeds) brought to an end Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen run in the tournament which offers USD1 million in prize money.
The biggest surprise of the day belonged to unheralded Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See who played their hearts out to snatch a come-from-behind 12-21, 21-19, 21-19 win against Indonesian sixth seeds Hafiz Faizal-Gloria Emmanuel Widjaja in a 68-minute thriller.
Liu Ying was a pitiful sight on the court when her nagging back injury acted up again against the Indians who rode on the Malaysian’s misfortune to carve out an 18-21, 24-22, 22-20 after a 75-minute battle.
Liu Ying seeking treatment for her back pain from the medical team.

The Melaka-born Liu Ying was seen clutching her back and it was clear that she was in great pain that restricted her movements on the court.

Still, Liu Ying and Peng Soon battled untill the last but their gallant efforts were not enough for a win.
Liu Ying even had to seek on-court medical treatment but it did little to ease her pain and it made the Indians’ task easier to advance to the last four.
Malaysia’s campaign in the men’s singles also came to an end despite national professional Liew Daren’s gallant bow out against Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen with the fourth-seed running out 21-16, 21-15 winner in 44 minutes.

BADMINTON: ZII JIA A BIG FLOP AT TOYOTA THAILAND OPEN

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 – Malaysia’s number one men’s singles shuttler, Lee Zii Jia crashed to first-round defeat in the Super 1000 Toyota Thailand Open 2021 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok after surrendering a 10-point lead in the second game against India’s Sameer Verma.
After taking the first game 21-18, the 22-year-old number eight seed Zii Jia looked good for a straight-game win with a healthy 18-7 lead.
However, at this stage, the Malaysian simply lost direction and his cutting edge to allow the Indian into the game.
Verma grew in confidence as Zii Jia, who is earmarked a potential medal winner at the Tokyo Olympics later this year, lost his character along the way, growing desperate for points.
Zii Jia heaped pressure on himself and at the end of 74 minutes, it was an 18-21, 27-25, 21-19 win for the Indian.
At last week’s Yonex Thailand Open at the same venue, Zii Jia made the quarter-final before bowing out to second-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei who won 21-17, 21-15. He made the quarter-final after India’s K. Srikanth conceded a walkover in the second round.
Professionals Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong got off to a winning start in the men’s doubles. The pair who finished runners-up in the Yonex Thailand Open advanced when Korean opponents Kim Gi-jung-Lee Yong-dae conceded a walkover four minutes into the match when Yong-dae suffered a calf injury with the Malaysians leading 6-2.
V Shem-Wee Kiong, the Rio Olympics silver medallist and former world champions will take on the Thai pair Supak Jomkoh-Kittinupong who surprised another Malaysian pair, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin 13-21, 21-13, 11-17.
Malaysia’s number one pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik who lost to V Shem-Wee Kiong in the first round last week, defeated Thailand’s Weerapat Phakjarung-Wongsathorn Thongkam 21-10, 21-18 to stay in contention.
Also on the winning mode was Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi but had to battle the distance before snatching a 19-21, 21-13, 21-19 win over homesters Nipitphon Phuangphuapet-Tanupat Viriyangkura in 54 minutes.
In the mixed doubles, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying smashed their way to a 21-13, 21-13 win over Germany’s Jones Jansen-Kilasu Ostermeyer while Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie outplayed the French pair of Ronan Labar-Anne Tran21-12, 21-15.
In the women singles, it was mixed fortunes for Malaysia. Soniia Cheah failed to clear the first hurdle with a 21-9, 21-14 defeat to second seed Sung Ji-hyun of Korea in 41 minutes. Malaysia’s hope now rests on s. Kisona.
The Sea Games champion breezed past Doha Hany of Egypt 21-10, 21-17 in only 23 minutes and will face India’s reigning world champion and sixth seed P.V. Sindhu for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen advanced after England’s higher ranked pair Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith21-14, 21-14.

KEJOHANAN GOLF AMATUR TERBUKA BRIDGESTONE ASEAN 2020 AGAK SURAM GARA-GARA PANDEMIK COVID-19

0
