BWF PROVIDES BOOST TO MEMBERS THROUGH GRANTS PROGRAMME

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – Over 100 BWF Member Associations have received their first sums of money under the BWF Membership Grants Programme activated in 2020.

According to a statement released by BF today, the process to release the funds to Member Associations was completed this week and around US$500,000 has been distributed so far, out of a long-term project investment pool planned for the next four years.

The BWF Membership Grant Programme provides opportunities for Member Associations to access tailored support, to assist them in developing badminton in their country.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and current restrictions on international travel and activities, BWF took the decision to adjust the Membership Grants Programme for the year 2020, in order to meet the current needs of Member Associations, particularly those impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Therefore, the funds released are tied to a ‘Back to Badminton’ theme, aimed at stimulating a return of badminton activities in the current environment.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer said: “Given the uncertain nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital that we reach out and support our Member Associations.

“The BWF Membership Grants Programme provides us with a necessary platform to achieve this in 2020.

“Long-term, we see the Grants Programme facilitating continued and consistent assistance for Members in helping them deliver key badminton activities in their countries.”

We had among other things developed a Covid-19 manual to assist our members mitigate actual or potential issues in their countries.”

“I want to commend our MAs together with the AFF Secretariat for acting decisively and taking the necessary measures to manage this pandemic. These are unprecedented times, but I am confident that we will weather this storm and prevail,” General Sameth said.

BAM MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: TERMINATORS CONTINUE TO STAMP AUTHORITY

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – Terminators continue to dominate the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Mixed Team Championship after beating Transformers 8-3 on the second day of the meet for their second consecutive victory.

However, this time round there was a slight change to Terminators tactical play where team captain and national No. 1, Lee Zii Jia was fielded in two matches.

The 22-year-old started the day teaming up with Lai Pei Jing in the Mixed Doubles against youngsters Yap Roy King-Peck Yen Wei where they clearly had little issue to win 15-10, 15-9 to give Terminators their first point of the match.

“We are used to training together, so I am quite familiar with him (Zii Jia) and have no communication issues while on court,” said Pei Jing.

“It all depends on how we lead. We can learn how to win points and matches even with different partners.”

Youngster Leong Jun Hao was quick with the equalizer for Transformers after beating Wyman Goh in straight set 15-11, 15-4 before Chow Mei Kuan-Pearly Tan then put Terminators 2-1 in front after beating Vivian Hoo-Yap Ling 15-13, 15-7 in the Mixed Doubles event.

Transformers would once again equalized for the second time through the Men’s Doubles pair of Chang Yee Jun-Nur Izzuddin who overcame Goh Sze Fei-Low Hang Yee 14-15, 15-12, 11-9.

Women’s Singles Lee Ying Ying then secured the third point for Terminators after winning over K. Letshaana 15-8, 15-13 before Mixed Doubles pair Muhd Haikal Nazri-Low Yeen Yuan extended the lead to 4-2 after beating Wan Muhd Arif Wan Junaidi-Cheng Su Hui in straight set 15-8, 15-9.

S. Kisona narrowed the gap to 3-4 for Transformers after beating Siti Nurshuhaini Azman 15-9, 15-8.

But Terminators would shut down any remnants of a fightback from the Tan Kian Meng led-Transformers when they hauled in the last four points of the match for the overall win.

Lee Shun Yang contributed the fifth point after beating Juston Hoh (15-13, 13-15, 11-5) in the Men’s Singles to be followed by the Women’s Trio of Chow Mei Kuan, Lai Pei Jing and Pearly Tan who won over Peck Yen Wei, Vivian Hoo and Yap Ling in straight set 15-14, 15-7.

Zii Jia once again excelled for the point for Terminators – this time in the Men’s Singles after beating Aidil Sholeh 15-4, 15-6.

The Men’s Trio of Chen Tan Jie, Goh Sze Fei and Low Han Yee then ended the second day competition for Terminators on the right note after winning over Chang Yee Jun, Leong Jun Hao and Nur Izzuddin 15-9, 12-15, 11-5.

“We will be at our best again tomorrow because we have not won (this tournament) yet and where we need to consider the results from the other teams as well,” added Pei Jing afterwards.

Terminators remained at the top of the table with two points and where they will take on Avengers led by Soh Wooi Yik in the final round robin match tomorrow.

In the meantime, Avengers failed to record their second win from two matches played when they fell to a 6-5 loss Dominators.

Goh Jin Wei had given Avengers the first point from the Women’s Singles after beating Soniia Cheah 15-12, 15-9.

“While this tournament can be considered as part of training matches, still we are playing really hard,” said Jin Wei.

“This competition is good as it gives me the opportunity to see how much progress I have made from the training sessions.”

Hoo Pang Ron-Shevon Lai equalized for Dominators after coming back from a first-set defeat to overcome Chia Wei Jie-Toh Ee Wei 10-15,15-6, 11- 7.

The Women’s Doubles then put Dominators ahead 2-1 after the pair of M. Thinaah-Yap Cheng Wen slide past Cheah Yee See-Lee Meng Yean 15-14, 15-7 before Aaron Chia-Ng Eng Cheong gave further point for Dominators to be 3-1 in front after beating Cheam June Wei-Soh Wooi Yik 15-9, 13-15, 8-11.

Lim Chong Kim continued to inject the right team spirit into the competition after winning over Shaqeem Eiman 15-12, 15-9 for the Aaron Chia led-Dominators to comfortably lead 4-1.

Eoon Qi Xuan closed the gap to 2-4 for Avengers after beating Tan Zhing Yi in straight set 15-13, 15-6 to be followed by another point from Beh Chun Meng-Valeree Siow Zi Xuan who overcame Goh Boon Zhe-Cheng Su Yin 15-12, 15-14 to put the score at 3-4.

Ng Tze Yong extended the lead for Dominators to 5-3 after defeating Ter Chun Long 15-9, 15-8 in the Men’s Singles.

But Jacky Kok Jing Hong and the trio of Cheah Yee See, Lee Meng Yean and Toh Ee Wei would turn the heat up at the Malaysian Badminton Academy when they overcame their respective opponents to put the score on level at 5-5.

However, Aaron Chia, Lwi Sheng Hao and Ng Eng Cheong would have the final say when they confirmed the 6-5 victory for Dominators over Avengers after defeating Goh Soon Huat, Soh Wooi Yik and Tee Kai Wun 15-5, 15-11 in the Men’s Trio.

“I am confident with my teammates. Whatever match we play, I know that we will give our best. After making some positional changes and having a discussion with the players, we managed to deliver some surprises,” said Zii Jia.

“The match was very intense from the start but the atmosphere here was quite lively. We have won the match today and hope to win again tomorrow, “said Wooi Yik.

BAM MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: PLATFORM TO STRENGTHEN TEAMWORK

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is organizing the internal Mixed Team Championship which starts tomorrow as part of the plan to ensure all players remain at optimum level.

This comes at the end of the 100PLUS National Youth Ranking Challenge Final Round which concluded yesterday.

According to BAM Coaching Director, Wong Choong Hann, the Mixed Team Championship will see the participation of 124 players – seniors and juniors, and where they will be divided into four teams.

The competition will follow the same concept or format as the Sudirman Cup with 11 matches to be held involving men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles and three-team (3’s) men’s and women’s events.

“We are giving this opportunity for the younger players to play against the seniors with the hope that they can gain experience from this as a motivation for them to work harder.

“The combination of teams consisting of senior and junior players aim to give all players the opportunity to get a feel of a competitive atmosphere following the absence of actual competitions at this time.

“At the same time too, we want to build team spirit and form cooperation among the players,” said Choong Hann.

He added that this competition is not aimed at preparing any of the players for the first international tournament which has been scheduled to take place in January 2021.

But Choong Hann believes, through the training program and internal competitions that have been drafted by the coaching panel and BAM management at this time, it will ensure that everyone is on the same level.

“We are not worried about preparing players ahead of the competition in January 2021 because we have to be prepared for whatever happens.

“There is no need to worry about the current situation because if the focus is fully given throughout the training sessions, the returns will almost be the same as during competitions,” Choong Hann added.

The BAM Mixed Team Championship will be held from 23 to 25 November at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM), Bukit Kiara.

The four teams are Terminators, Avengers, Transformers and Dominators with each team to be managed by a coaching staff.

Each team consists of 31 senior and junior players.

CHOONG HANN IMPRESSED BY THE YOUNGSTERS

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 – Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Coacing Director, Wong Choong Hann was impressed with the performance of several youngsters who took part in the 100PLUS National Junior Ranking Challenge Final Round at the Badminton Academy Malaysia (ABM), Bukit Kiara this week.

Thirteen of the best young players under the tutelage of Datuk Misbun Sidek, BAM’s Director of Youth Development, showcased their talent in the internal competition.

“Young players like Wan Muhd Haikal Nazri-Wan Muhd Arif Wan Junaidi and Justin Hoh showed a lot of enthusiasm and focus where they displayed their maturity beyond their age. This is a positive development,” said Choong Hann.

He said that the plan is to mix these up and coming youngsters alongside the older players as this will allow everyone the chance to continuously self-assess and gauge their level.

“To be a good player, age is not the main factor, but craftsmanship and the willingness to learn are more important.

“We do not know the potential of these players until we put a more formidable opponent against them. There are no limits to the development of potential and there is still a lot that can be improved and one of them is the physical conditioning and muscle strength where it requires a more long-term plan,” Choong Hann added.

He went on to remind the older players who failed to impress in this competition to get back to the drawing board and come up with new plans with the panel of coaches to improve on their existing training programs.

In the meantime, Misbun lauded the performance of his young chargers where they have achieved the target which has been set.

“Training during the Movement Control Order has inspired the players to perform at a different level.

“The level was already set on the first day of the boys’ singles when the young players overcame the senior boys. Every player won except Jacky (Kok Jing Hong) who lost to (Ter) Chun Long despite being in the lead.

From there, we can assess that the players are on track, they just need some further tweaking,” said Misbun.

He admitted that the boys singles are doing a lot better but there are still disparities in the girls singles and also the girls doubles.

Misbun hopes that given time, these new gems can be polished further through special training and programs for them to get on to the next level.

Meanwhile, Lee Shun Yang emerged champion in the boys singles after completing the final day of competition with a straight set 21-13, 21-10 victory over Wyman Goh.

“I already know his (Wyman Goh) game, so it was easy to take this win. But overall, I’m not satisfied with my performance because at the start of the competition, I lost to two younger players.

“But I did not think too much on that loss and continued to play my usual game. To come in first was unexpected,” said Shun Yang.

After five matches, Shun Yang shared 3 points with Wyman Goh and Justin Hoh but takes the top spot based on winning record after five matches.

‘UiTM IS NOT A KINDERGARTEN’ – FRANK BERNHARDT

0
PETALING JAYA, Nov 20 – After an impressive run in Super League in their debut in the elite league this season UiTM FC is setting lofty targets in the new season – including a place in the AFC Cup.
The university team retained the services of their German head coach Frank Bernhardt for another season for continuity and to take their game to a higher level.
The former Malaysian Under-23 coach took UiTM Fc to sixth place in the Super League and also a place in the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals. against some of the big names in Malaysian football.
On Friday, the soft-spoken German killed all speculations of him moving to another team when he penned his signature on the dotted line for a new contract that runs through  November 2021 and has faith the team will deliver again.
“We are not kindergarten. The team showed it is on par with the rest this season. I am ready to take the team to greater heights and the work starts now,” said Bernhardt during a press conference after signing his contract at the UiTM FC Sports Complex in Shah Alam.
“Rumours of me moving to another team are not true. I am very happy working with the management and the players here. Why should I move and start all over again in a new place when all is done professionally here?
“It will be tough in the new season but we will be ready for the challenge. I have faith in the team. There is a movement of players from this year’s team but we will work on what we have and will get better quality replacements to build a stronger team despite a small budget,” said the German.
UiTM FC has retained nine local players from this year’s squad and will pick the rest of the squad from open trials next month. UiTM FC will have a new foreign legion after Rabih Ataya (Lebanon) and Frenchmen Victor Nirrennold and Ousman Fane left the team.
Prof Dr. Azizan Abdullah, president of UiTM FC, is confident that Bernhardt will be able to achieve the target next year – retain its place in the Super League with an eye on winning a place in the AFC Cup.
Among the names retained include Azar Arif, Afif Asyraf, Ahmad Khuzaimee Piee, Narshan Elias, Sharif Alhafiz, and Azam Jais.
In the Malaysia Cup first round UiTM FC downed Kelantan 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals under the new format for the oldest football competition. However, the Malaysia Cup was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The university side was to meet Penang for a place in the last four.

In the meantime, Justin Hoh recorded his third victory in the boys singles category after knocking off Ong Ken Yon 22-20, 21-10 to snatch the top spot where he almost assured of taking the title.

Justin is on the same three points with Wyman Goh who overcame Ter Chun Long 21-18, 21-14.

“Of course it feels good to win but I am trying hard not get stressed out on the game tomorrow. Even though I am the youngest player in the boys singles group, I want to prove to the coaches who had given me the confidence to do well,” said Justin.

In the boys doubles, seniors Lwi Sheng Hao-Yap Roy King confirmed their status as champions while another senior pair, Choong Hon Jian-Nur Firdaus Azman finished second.

In the girl doubles, Teoh Mei Xing-Yap Ling made it two wins from two matches to top the standings.

Mei Xing-Yap Ling were forced to work hard before beating Pearly Tan-Toh Ee Wei in three sets, 21-17, 18-21, 21-18.

“We managed to control our emotions well playing against the younger players. We played without any pressure and we were able to stick to the game plan which has been set.

“Our partnership is getting better since the first time we played together in 2018,” said Mei Xing.
