AFF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP LAUNCH SHIFTED TO 2022
Kuala Lumpur, Nov 26 – In anticipation of a congested calendar of competitions next year, the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has decided to shift the launch of the inaugural ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) to 2022.
International, regional and domestic calendars in 2021 will be severely clogged due to the rescheduling of competitions from this year, among them the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, AFC competitions and the AFF Suzuki Cup.
In addition to accommodating international tournaments, clubs and players have domestic obligations to fulfill next year, leaving them with limited time for other additional commitments.
“Several countries will have additional local issues to contend with, which may add further to the congestion.
“With all this in mind, together with the overall uncertainty that still remains about any dates in 2021, we have decided with our partners to move the launch of the ACC to 2022,” said AFF President, Major General Khiev Sameth in a statement today.
“The ACC is a key pillar of our regional development strategy, and we’ve agreed that a move to 2022 is the right decision at this stage. As we begin to regroup, it became clear that having to launch the ACC in a much-reduced format, within what we know will be a heavily congested season, would not be in the best interests of the event or our members.“
Despite this unavoidable delay, AFF will proceed with preparations and will soon be unveiling the tournament logo and trophy.
AFF is looking forward to launching ASEAN’s premier club event in 2022 with teams from each national league.
A further update regarding the ACC will be provided once the world football calendar, together with domestic League and Cup schedules for 2021/2022 have been finalised.
Organised and sanctioned by the AFF, the ACC is a lucrative competition featuring 12 leading clubs in the region.
It was originally slated to kick-off this year. The ACC offers attractive cash prizes to all participating teams, with the winning club poised to pocket more than USD$500,000.
The ACC will be the next major competition in the region after the enormously successful AFF Suzuki Cup.
PLAYERS PERFORMS TO OUR EXPECTATION – CHOONG HANN
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 – Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Coaching Director, Wong Choong Hann expressed his satisfaction on the performance of the players who took part in the BAM Mixed Team Championship which ended in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
Choong Hann said that the challenge during the tournament was to see how the players learn to control stress and emotions when they are on the court.
While the tournament was more of a testing ground rather than an outright competition, but the players handled themselves very well.
“I think that the tournament has brought about more positive elements that we had earlier expected, especially in terms of the team spirit. And this even though we had put all the seniors and the youngsters together where they showed strength in unity,” said Choong Hann.
“Through this mixed team tournament, we also noticed that the seniors were playing under pressure and it is through this platform that we used to test the stress factor and how these players handle emotions when they are under stressed.
“The seniors were under pressure because they were not only shouldering responsibility for themselves but also for their teammates and the youngsters under them.”
The tournament was also a learning tool for the coaching staff where they used the opportunity to monitor and to improve further their training program based on the current development of the players.
“The panel of coaches also need to ensure that the players emotions are not affected due to the absence of competition when they have to go through the same daily routine every day,” added Choong Hann.
BAM took the initiative to organise a simulation competition for the Road to Tokyo (RTT) Programme involving senior players undergoing quarantine training with strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM).

Starting with the invitational tournament held in July including ranking challenges for national youth players and mixed team tournaments, BAM and the coaching staff designed this simulation competition with the aim of providing a competitive environment for players in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The senior players have been given a week off starting this Saturday and they will report back on 5 December to focus fully on preparation for the first tournament scheduled to take place in January 2021.

BWF AND SOI PUBLISH GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 – Badminton World Federation (BWF) in collaboration with Special Olympics International (SOI) has published their Global Development Strategy to grow badminton and provide meaningful opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to be involved in all aspects of badminton.
This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2019 between the two
organisations.
Badminton is a fast-developing sport in the Special Olympics world and currently has more than 370,000 players engaged in the game globally.
Between 2018 and 2019 alone, an additional 62,000 new Special Olympics athletes with and without intellectual disabilities took up their rackets and headed for the courts, demonstrating the potential of the sport to grow and reach more players globally with additional support.
The new strategy between the two organisations is centred on four Key Results Areas –
Development, Events, Partnerships, and Communication – and will be implemented with the assistance of regional and national partners of both the BWF and SOI.
BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer in a statement released by BWF today said: “In line with our motto that badminton is a sport for all, we are committed to providing avenues of participation for everyone.
“This strategy will hopefully foster the establishment of more platforms to allow children and adults with intellectual disabilities to experience badminton all the time.
“We have enjoyed great success collaborating with SOI over the past 12 months and numbers suggest the uptake of badminton among Special Olympics athletes is increasing globally.”
The partnership between BWF and SOI is already seeing results. Over the last year, 16 new
national-level federation partnerships between national Special Olympics programmes and
national badminton federations were formalised.
Five of the new national federation partnerships supported the introduction of badminton to a Special Olympics programme (Special Olympics Fiji, Special Olympics Guam, Special Olympics Papua New Guinea, Special Olympics Lithuania, and Special Olympics Norway).
Chairman of SOI, Tim Shriver, added: “I applaud the leadership of BWF and it’s association
members for including Special Olympics in the design of this strategic plan.
“The simple but poignant act of committing to place a badminton racket in the hand of every Special Olympics athlete will open the door to improved health, new friendships through sport and more inclusive communities.”
BAM MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: AVENGERS UPSET TERMINATORS TO LIFT THE TITLE
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 – Avengers delivered an upset 6-5 win over Terminators to emerge champions of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Mixed Team Championship on the final match day of the tournament in Bukit Kiara.
The victory gave the Soh Wooi Yik-led Avengers their place at the top of the standings – on the same two points but with Terminators having to settle for the runners-ups spot.
The Lee Zii Jia-led Terminators started well in the Women’s Doubles to take the first point through Chow Mei Kuan-Pearly Tan who defeated Myisha Mohd Khairul-Valeree Siow Zi Xuan in straight set 15-8, 15-6.

But Goh Soon Huat-Cheah Yee See tied the score 1-1 after the Mixed Doubles pair beat Chen Tang Jie-Lai Pei Jing 15-13,15-12 as Zii Jia then put Terminators back in the lead 2-1 after coasting past Jacky Kok Jing Hong 15- 13, 15-11.
Wooi Yik then ignited Avengers’ fightback to tie the score at 2-2 after his partnership with Chia Wei Jie in the Men’s Doubles overcame Goh Sze Fei-Low Hang Yee 13-15, 15-10, 11-6.
Cheam June Wei and Eoon Qi Xuan were on the winning path as they contributed a point each to put Avengers 4-2 in front.
Lee Shun Yang then narrowed the gap at 3-4 for Terminators after beating Shaqeem Eiman 15-14, 8-15, 11-4 as Goh Jin Wei then restored Avengers’ two-point advantage following her hard-fought 8-15, 15-8, 11-6 win over Siti Nurshuhaini Azman.

With the score at 5-3 to Avengers, Mixed Doubles pair of Muhd Haikal Nazri-Low Yeen Yuan as well as the Women’s Trio of Chow Mei Kuan, Lai Pei Jing and Pearly Tan then put Terminators back into contention with the two points to tie the score at 5-5.
It was then down to the Men’s Trio with the two captains – Zii jia and Wooi Yik – leading the charge.
And it was the combination of Chia Wei Jie-Soh Wooi Yik and Tee Kai Wun that delivered the crucial final point for Avengers when they overcame Goh Sze Fei-Lee Zii Jia and Low Han Yee 13-15, 15-11, 10-11 for the title.
“The aim was to win the doubles and also the Men’s Singles but we lost the men’s singles. I really did not expect to do battle until the Trios,” said Wooi Yik.
“Credit to all the players because we were always talking to each other and finding ways to fix all the shortcomings.”
In spite of the defeat, Zii Jia was still proud of the performance of his teammates throughout the BAM Mixed Team Championship which started on Monday.

“Our team spirit was good and all the players showed plenty of commitment to give their very best,” said Zii Jia.
“Even though we lost, there’s still some measure of satisfaction for me as the young players get the experience from playing against the seniors. And also, everyone was very supportive of one another all the way until the last match.”
In the meantime, Transformers completed the competition on third after beating Dominators 7-4 in their final match.
Hoo Pang Ron-Teoh Mei Xing gave the Aaron Chia-led Dominators the first point when they easily overcame Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Peck Yen Wei 15-12, 15-14 in the Mixed Doubles.
Vivian Hoo-Yap Ling then gave Transformers the equalizing point through the Women’s Doubles – defeating M. Thinaah-Yap Cheng Wen 9-15, 15-8, 11-4.
Leong Jun Hao and Aidil Sholeh contributed one point each in the Men’s Singles to extend the lead for Transformers at 3-1.

Soniia Cheah’s win over K. Letshaana 15-7, 15-6 and captain Aaron Chia, who played in the Men’s Doubles with Ng Eng Cheong’s win over Chang Yee Jun-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani 15-10, 15-11 restored the score back on level at 3-3.

While Aaron still managed to steal one final point after his partnership with Lwi Sheng Hao and Ng Eng Cheong in the Men’s Trio to beat Chang Yee Jun-Leong Jun Hao and Yap Roy King in three sets 11-15, 15-14, 11-8, it could not prevent Transformers from winning match 7-4.

BWF PROVIDES BOOST TO MEMBERS THROUGH GRANTS PROGRAMME
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – Over 100 BWF Member Associations have received their first sums of money under the BWF Membership Grants Programme activated in 2020.
According to a statement released by BF today, the process to release the funds to Member Associations was completed this week and around US$500,000 has been distributed so far, out of a long-term project investment pool planned for the next four years.
The BWF Membership Grant Programme provides opportunities for Member Associations to access tailored support, to assist them in developing badminton in their country.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and current restrictions on international travel and activities, BWF took the decision to adjust the Membership Grants Programme for the year 2020, in order to meet the current needs of Member Associations, particularly those impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Therefore, the funds released are tied to a ‘Back to Badminton’ theme, aimed at stimulating a return of badminton activities in the current environment.
BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer said: “Given the uncertain nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital that we reach out and support our Member Associations.
“The BWF Membership Grants Programme provides us with a necessary platform to achieve this in 2020.
“Long-term, we see the Grants Programme facilitating continued and consistent assistance for Members in helping them deliver key badminton activities in their countries.”
AFF CONGRESS: AFF PRESIDENT PRAISES MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS FOR ACTING DECISIVELY DURING COVID-19
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) President, Major General Khiev Sameth today commended AFF’s 12 Member Associations and its Secretariat for acting decisively and effectively in managing the devastating Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the first-ever virtual AFF Congress today, General Sameth commented: “Since the onset of this pandemic, AFF worked closely with our Member Associations to enhance their readiness and capability to withstand disruption from a financial, operational and strategic standpoint. We had among other things developed a Covid-19 manual to assist our members mitigate actual or potential issues in their countries.”
“I want to commend our MAs together with the AFF Secretariat for acting decisively and taking the necessary measures to manage this pandemic. These are unprecedented times, but I am confident that we will weather this storm and prevail,” General Sameth said.
The pandemic severely impacted the region, with MAs rescheduling or cancelling their national leagues and activities.
AFF was also affected as this year’s competitions were cancelled while the prestigious AFF Suzuki Cup was rescheduled to April next year.
“We are confident conditions will improve soon and we can get back to organising competitions and activities again. The recent announcement on the vaccines is great news and provides hope we may see a restart of competitions sooner.”
General Sameth said one of the other things AFF had done was to partner QFA (Qatar Football Association) to organise the two-day workshop entitled Bouncing Back from Covid-19.
This collaboration with QFA is the result of a strategic partnership between AFF and Qatar FA. AFF will be organising similar workshops and programmes for the benefit of the members.
Meanwhile, the AFF President praised the youth teams, especially the six nations that qualified for the AFC U19 and the spectacular AFF Awards ceremony in Hanoi last year.
General Sameth also applauded the secretariat, headed by AFF General Secretary Winston Lee, for the improvements that have significantly enhanced the management and commercial value of AFF.
“We focused on professionalising AFF including our competitions portfolio review, strategy development, commercial drive, productivity improvement, technology enablement, internal governance and resource optimization. AFF will continue to adopt a pragmatic approach and analyse the way our football business is structured and operates to serve our stakeholders including Member Associations better.”
Representatives, including Presidents and General Secretaries, all attended today’s virtual AFF Congress which was conducted by AFF General Secretary Winston Lee. This is the first time in the history of the AFF that the Congress is being staged online.
BAM MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: TERMINATORS CONTINUE TO STAMP AUTHORITY
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – Terminators continue to dominate the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Mixed Team Championship after beating Transformers 8-3 on the second day of the meet for their second consecutive victory.
However, this time round there was a slight change to Terminators tactical play where team captain and national No. 1, Lee Zii Jia was fielded in two matches.
The 22-year-old started the day teaming up with Lai Pei Jing in the Mixed Doubles against youngsters Yap Roy King-Peck Yen Wei where they clearly had little issue to win 15-10, 15-9 to give Terminators their first point of the match.
“We are used to training together, so I am quite familiar with him (Zii Jia) and have no communication issues while on court,” said Pei Jing.
“It all depends on how we lead. We can learn how to win points and matches even with different partners.”
Youngster Leong Jun Hao was quick with the equalizer for Transformers after beating Wyman Goh in straight set 15-11, 15-4 before Chow Mei Kuan-Pearly Tan then put Terminators 2-1 in front after beating Vivian Hoo-Yap Ling 15-13, 15-7 in the Mixed Doubles event.
Transformers would once again equalized for the second time through the Men’s Doubles pair of Chang Yee Jun-Nur Izzuddin who overcame Goh Sze Fei-Low Hang Yee 14-15, 15-12, 11-9.
Women’s Singles Lee Ying Ying then secured the third point for Terminators after winning over K. Letshaana 15-8, 15-13 before Mixed Doubles pair Muhd Haikal Nazri-Low Yeen Yuan extended the lead to 4-2 after beating Wan Muhd Arif Wan Junaidi-Cheng Su Hui in straight set 15-8, 15-9.
S. Kisona narrowed the gap to 3-4 for Transformers after beating Siti Nurshuhaini Azman 15-9, 15-8.
But Terminators would shut down any remnants of a fightback from the Tan Kian Meng led-Transformers when they hauled in the last four points of the match for the overall win.
Lee Shun Yang contributed the fifth point after beating Juston Hoh (15-13, 13-15, 11-5) in the Men’s Singles to be followed by the Women’s Trio of Chow Mei Kuan, Lai Pei Jing and Pearly Tan who won over Peck Yen Wei, Vivian Hoo and Yap Ling in straight set 15-14, 15-7.
Zii Jia once again excelled for the point for Terminators – this time in the Men’s Singles after beating Aidil Sholeh 15-4, 15-6.
The Men’s Trio of Chen Tan Jie, Goh Sze Fei and Low Han Yee then ended the second day competition for Terminators on the right note after winning over Chang Yee Jun, Leong Jun Hao and Nur Izzuddin 15-9, 12-15, 11-5.
“We will be at our best again tomorrow because we have not won (this tournament) yet and where we need to consider the results from the other teams as well,” added Pei Jing afterwards.
Terminators remained at the top of the table with two points and where they will take on Avengers led by Soh Wooi Yik in the final round robin match tomorrow.
In the meantime, Avengers failed to record their second win from two matches played when they fell to a 6-5 loss Dominators.
Goh Jin Wei had given Avengers the first point from the Women’s Singles after beating Soniia Cheah 15-12, 15-9.

“While this tournament can be considered as part of training matches, still we are playing really hard,” said Jin Wei.
“This competition is good as it gives me the opportunity to see how much progress I have made from the training sessions.”
Hoo Pang Ron-Shevon Lai equalized for Dominators after coming back from a first-set defeat to overcome Chia Wei Jie-Toh Ee Wei 10-15,15-6, 11- 7.
The Women’s Doubles then put Dominators ahead 2-1 after the pair of M. Thinaah-Yap Cheng Wen slide past Cheah Yee See-Lee Meng Yean 15-14, 15-7 before Aaron Chia-Ng Eng Cheong gave further point for Dominators to be 3-1 in front after beating Cheam June Wei-Soh Wooi Yik 15-9, 13-15, 8-11.
Lim Chong Kim continued to inject the right team spirit into the competition after winning over Shaqeem Eiman 15-12, 15-9 for the Aaron Chia led-Dominators to comfortably lead 4-1.
Eoon Qi Xuan closed the gap to 2-4 for Avengers after beating Tan Zhing Yi in straight set 15-13, 15-6 to be followed by another point from Beh Chun Meng-Valeree Siow Zi Xuan who overcame Goh Boon Zhe-Cheng Su Yin 15-12, 15-14 to put the score at 3-4.
Ng Tze Yong extended the lead for Dominators to 5-3 after defeating Ter Chun Long 15-9, 15-8 in the Men’s Singles.
But Jacky Kok Jing Hong and the trio of Cheah Yee See, Lee Meng Yean and Toh Ee Wei would turn the heat up at the Malaysian Badminton Academy when they overcame their respective opponents to put the score on level at 5-5.
However, Aaron Chia, Lwi Sheng Hao and Ng Eng Cheong would have the final say when they confirmed the 6-5 victory for Dominators over Avengers after defeating Goh Soon Huat, Soh Wooi Yik and Tee Kai Wun 15-5, 15-11 in the Men’s Trio.
After two days of competition, Dominators and Avengers are on second and third place respectively with one point each.
