REXY MAINAKY STAKES A FIRM GRIP IN BAM’s COACHING REVAMP

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 – The writing was on the wall when it was announced in late October that Indonesian Rexy Mainaky will be renewing his links with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as a deputy director of coaching.
The Malaysian permanent resident, took up the post on December 1 and on Tuesday (Dec 28) the BAM announced a major revamp of its coaching structure. It was revealed by BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh that the national body will have two coaching directors – one for singles and one for doubles.
BAM’s incumbent director of coaching Wong Choong Hann – “The Voice of BAM” – will be in charge of the singles while Rexy will be the supremo for doubles. Rexy, 53, has returned to Malaysia after a  nine-year absence.
In October, HubMedia reported that the BAM coaching setup is expected to undergo revamping after Malaysia’s flop at the Tokyo Olympics where badminton returned without a gold medal and were rather lucky to win a bronze medal in the men’s doubles through Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
Reigning All-England champion Lee Zii Jia was hailed as potential gold medal prospect in Tokyo after winning the prestigious title in Birmingham.
Next year will be a hectic year for badminton with the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, the Sea Games (Vietnam) and not forgetting the Thomas Cup.
HubMedia reported that Rexy’s arrival left many question marks. Will he be handed wide ranging powers, especially in the doubles? That questions were answered on Tuesday (Dec 28) when Datuk Kenny announced BAM is “moving forward by streamlining” the coaching structure.
Rexy’s arrival will expand BAM’s Indonesian family in the coaching setup. BAM already has a strong pool of Indonesian coaches in the setup – Hendrawan (men’s singles), Flandy Limpele (men’s doubles), Indra Wijaya (women’s singles) and Paulus Firman (mixed doubles).
Rexy needs no introduction in the shuttle sport. He comes with strong credentials, having achieved highs as a player and also a coach. The most recent, as head of coaching with the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT).
The Indonesian ace is not new to Malaysian badminton. He was the men’s doubles coach from 2005-2012 who groomed Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong into world beaters.
The pair also won Asiad gold in Doha in 2006, defeating Indonesia’s Luluk Hadiyanto-Alvent Yulianto 21-13, 21-14 in the final.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong also won the All-England in 2007 – defeating China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng 21-15, 21-18 for the title.
HubMedia also reported in its story in October, that many, including players and coaches are not happy with Choong Hann’s “politics” as the BAM’s director of coaching.
With time against BAM in its mission to make up for the flop at the Tokyo Olympics, the national badminton body has taken the right steps to make it count in Paris 2024 Olympics.

UNLOCKING MALAYSIA’S FOOTBALL POTENTIAL

0
Pic credit to FAM media
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 – For this to happen, the FA of Malaysia (FAM) must revamp the team management – not the coaching panel – after Malaysia’s failure to reach the semi-finals in the on-going AFF Suzuki Cup in Singapore.
To drive home this strong message – Malaysia, once the Asian giant in football – must have the right people with football knowledge for the (management) job. Not someone who could not even get a player on the plane when called up for national duty.
The player, instead, was fishing in the deep seas in South China Sea. Where is your national pride and dignity when team manager Datuk Yusoff Mahadi asked the player not to be punished for missing the Middle East playing tour.
Whose folly was it? The player or an incompetent team manager? Who is supposed to look into such affairs to ensure the team’s smooth management?
We have many football greats – household names who are still remembered not only in the country but also at international levels.
They are are still around to get cracking if given the job. The former greats are not only vastly experienced in the game but they are also competent to impart their football expertise at all levels – having donned club and national colors.
The FA of Malaysia (FAM) must get rid of the Yes Men –  (who are usually the president’s men) in the national football body.
We don’t need people who know next to nothing about the game but are there because of political links or other reasons.
It is lucrative to hold a post in the FAM, as the perks that come with it are plenty. Who would not want the perks when all you have to do is wear your suit (as and when required) and do some handshake here and there to introduce yourself.
The FAM has promised to conduct a postmortem on Malaysia’s failure in Singapore after defeats to Vietnam (3-0) and Indonesia (4-1) against wins over Cambodia (3-1) and Laos (4-0) in Group B.
As usual head coach Tan Cheng Hoe (and his coaching panel) are the scapegoats. Will Cheng Hoe quit or will he be forced to quit. It is a big, big question which is being asked by many.
Removing Cheng Hoe from the job will be a big, big mistake when the 2023 Asian Cup qualifiers are just around the corner. The flop in Singapore is no fault of Cheng Hoe and his coaching panel.
Everyone is aware that it was not a strong Malaysian team in Singapore for various reasons. As reported earlier by HubMedia, the FAM and the Malaysian Football League are also party to the flop in Singapore.
Not many are aware that the final say in the team does not lie with the Cheng Hoe and his coaching panel.
There are “hidden hands” who decide on the team. These “hidden hands” have the power to overrule all. Yes. This is true. Very true.
The clout they have is destroying Malaysian football. Until this is checked, Malaysian football can only get from bad to worse or doomed as countries like Thailand, Vietnam or even Indonesia and Singapore make inroads.
In short, the FAM needs a complete overhaul. Those who currently hold office, should ask themselves if they should remain or QUIT.
Truth hurts but be a man and own up for your shortcomings in the name of Harimau Malaya and leave.
For the record Cheng Hoe has a contract that runs through 2022 and has another major assignment – the 2023 Asian Cup final round qualifiers.
Give him a free hand to pick his team…pick his team on merit and without interference from those with clout.
Let’s go back to the 60s and 70s and even early 80s. That were the golden years of Malaysian football when we ruled Asian football and even used to beat the likes Japan, South Korea, India, Burma (Myanmar).
Soh Chin Aun, Mokhtar Dahari, R. Arumugam, Bakri Ibni, Santokh Singh, Shukor Salleh, Peter Rajah, Wong Choong Wah, Serbegeth Singh, Lim Fung Kee, Wong Kam Fook, Jamal Nasir, M. Karathu, James Wong. Hassan Sani, Yunus Alif, N. Thanabalan, Abdah Alif, M. Chandran, Namat Abdullah, Shahruddin Abdullah, Isa Bakar to name some…all household names.
They played for the nation and the flag on their chest was their pride. More importantly, they played as true Malaysians. Race and religion was never a question unlike today. Sports without borders. We should bring this harmony back in sports.
It is sad to see politicians using sports for their political mileage. Sadly, this has destroyed sports in a country which has discarded racial harmony – thanks to politicians. We don’t need such politicians in sports.
Just a reminder that Cheng Hoe and his coaching panel need the help of FAM and the MFL to get things moving. The two football bodies must draw up a comprehensive football calendar for 2022…with proper local league fixtures. Enough study tours have been done on how to run a local league and cup competitions.
National duty comes first and clubs have to get their priorities right when the need arises.
Finally, the deadwood should be removed.

PARA PESERTA PDSC 2021 WAJIB PATUHI SOP YANG TELAH DITETAPKAN PENGANJUR

0

FAM, MFL EQUALLY TO BE BLAMED FOR MALAYSIA’S AFF SUZUKI CUP FLOP

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 – Malaysia is out of the AFF Suzuki Cup and you can bet there will be scapegoats for the team’s failure in Singapore.
It is a norm in Malaysian sports bodies to find scapegoats for failures. This has happened once too often. We have seen those in power shift the blame on scapegoats, except themselves.
In real fact those who hold top positions are the root cause of failures and the actual cause of flops.
National football team manager, Datuk Yusoff Mahadi went as far as saying that the Harimau Malaya can even regain the silverware they last won in 2010, knowing that the team was ill-prepared for various reasons.
Apart from the tight local fixtures that was also hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Everybody knows that national football head coach Tan Cheng Hoe took an ill-prepared team to Singapore without “key” players who would have made a difference.
Let’s not forget that even then netizens and so called football experts questioned Cheng Hoe’s selection of players.
The FA of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Football League (MFL) should be blamed for the crammed fixtures in the league and the Malaysia Cup.
The FAM and the MFL must take a fair share of the blame. After decades of study tours organized by the FAM, we still seem to be groping with a comprehensive yearly football calendar that will benefit all parties.
Indonesia whacked Malaysia 4-1 in their last Group B fixture that was played at the National Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Garuda, as Indonesia is known, showed what solid preparations can do to a team and they did it in style. And that too after conceding an early 13th minute goal by Kogileswaran Raj – a long range effort from about 25 meters
The Indonesians came in waves and with a high intensity pressing game saw Malaysia caved in. Irfan Jaya plundered a brace (36th, 43rd), Pratama Arhan (50th) and Elkan Baggott (82nd).
The Indonesian team trained in Turkey for a month before the AFF  Suzuki Cup and making the semi-finals is a big achievement.
In the last four, Indonesia, as the Group B champions will face Singapore (Group A runners-up) with the first-leg on Wednesday (Dec 22) and the return-leg on Christmas day.
The other semi-finals will see defending champions Vietnam take on five-time champions Thailand. The first-leg is on Thursday (Dec 23rd) and the return-leg on Sunday (Dec 26).
Coming back to Malaysia, be prepared for accusing fingers to be pointed at scapegoats which is a norm in Malaysia.
Let us hope that good sense will prevail and let Cheng Hoe and his coaching panel do its job.
Here again, sports politics should not come into the picture. Netizens will also have to play their role and not question who is called up.
Cheng Hoe and his coaching panel know who can “fit into the system” and who can “gel into the system” when Harimau Malaya plays in the Asia Cup final round qualifiers.
Cheng Hoe had his hands full from day one when the team arrived in Singapore. Two players – goalkeeper Khairul Azhan Khalid and flanker Faisal Halim – were tested positive and were served a 10-day quarantine.
Two more – Akhyar Rashid and Quentin Cheng – were also tested positive after Malaysia’s first match, which was against Cambodia on Dec 6. Malaysia won 3-1 and Akhyar was named The Man of the Match.
Injuries also took its toll on the team. The backline was hard hit when skipper Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and Shahrul Saad picked up hamstring injuries against Vietnam. Vietnam won 3-0.

ZII JIA BLISTERED OUT AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SPAIN

dav
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 – It was a painful exit for national No 1 Lee Zii Jia when his  hopes of winning at least a bronze medal in the World Championships went up in smoke in the quarter-final tie against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen.
The 23-year-old Malaysian called it quits in the decider with the Dane, ranked No 3 in the world, leading 11-1 at the mid-game break.
Sixth seeded Zii Jia and ranked No 7, won the first game comfortably at 21-12 but it was all square after the second game.
With Zii Jia’s game affected by the pain and his movements on the court restricted, Antonsen forced a rubber with a 21-8 win.
It was one way traffic for the Dane in the decider when he led a 10-0 before Zii Jia broke the duck.
Pain and disappointment was written all over Zii Jia’s face when Antonsen shook hands with the Malaysian and enquired on his shock “retirement” from the world meet.
According to coach Hendrawan, Zii Jia sustained the blister in the third round match against Denmark veteran Hans-Kristian Vittinghus a day earlier.
A place in the semi-finals would have assured Zii Jia a bronze medal.
Antonsen, a silver medal winner at the last world meet in Basel, Switzerland in 2018 (he lost to Japan’s Keno Momota in the final).
It has been a disappointing outing for Malaysia in Spain. Top men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik failed to make the quarter-finals.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medal winners continued their roller coaster run in their career and lost to China’s He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang 17-21, 21-14, 21-16 in the third round.
Where Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik flopped, professionals Ong Yew Sin-Ee Yi kept Malaysia’s flag flying in the men’s doubles and assured of at least a bronze medal when they marched into the last four after packing off reigning Tokyo Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei.
The Malaysians came through a three-game thriller with a come-from-behind 12-21, 21-17, 21-15 win in 65 minutes. In the semis they face Japan’s fifth seeds Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi.
Another professional pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong came unstuck against Ji Ting-Tan Qiang, losing in straight games 20-22, 14-21 in 40 minutes.
Also out of a medal contention is the mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie after a 21-15, 21-13 defeat to Thai favorites Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai. The Thais are seeded No 2.

CAN THE KALLANG BIGGIE GO MALAYSIA’S WAY?

0
PETALING JAYA, Dec 18 – The do or die mission for Harimau Malaya against Indonesia has a lot to offer in Sunday’s Group B match – a must win match for Tan Cheng Hoe’s team to stay alive in the  AFF Suzuki Cup in Singapore.
On paper Malaysia has a mountain to scale after the 3-0 defeat to Vietnam which came in the wake of wins over Cambodia (3-1) and Laos (4-0) in their first two matches.
Point to note is that Cheng Hoe had handicaps at his disposal – thanks to the Covid-19 that saw flanker Faisal Halim and goalkeeper Azhan Khairul Khalid tested positive on arrival in the Lion City on Dec 3.
More was to come when Akhyar Rashid (the Man of the Match against Cambodia), Quentin Cheng also fell victim to the virus after being tested positive after the match.
All have since then rejoined the team’s training after serving quarantine. Dion Cools has also arrived in Singapore on Wednesday.
With the arrival of Dion Cools, Cheng Hoe has a full squad at his disposal but he has left it late before deciding on his first team.
“Team spirit has soared since the full squad got together for training. Dion Cools has settled down well with the rest of his teammates. Everyone is aware that we need a win for a top two finish.
“That is a mission we have. The team has not given up (hope) and there is still fire in the players to achieve a positive result in the mission,”‘ said Cheng Hoe from Singapore, adding that Faisal will feature in his first team.
Just like Guilherme De Paula, Belgium-based Luqman Hakim Shamsudin has not been able to “deliver” but the Kelantan-born is expected to start the match while the naturalized Brazilian is expected to start from the bench.
Cheng Hoe is also hoping that the new environment at the Kallang Stadium and a better pitch will be able to swing the match in Malaysia’s favor.
”We are aware that Indonesia is a much improved team under their new Korean coach (Shin Tae Yong) but it stops at that for us,” added Cheng Hoe, who is expected to play Dion Cools and Dominic Tan in the heart of defense.
Regulars, skipper Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and Shahrul Saad are nursing hamstring injuries sustained in the match against Vietnam.
Their backs are against the wall but the Malaysians are capable of getting the much needed win for a place in the semi-finals despite the odds stacked against them.

PINK RACING: “YANG PENTING DAPAT MENAMATKAN PERLUMBAAN DAN PODIUM ITU BONUS”

0

NATIONAL MEN’S DOUBLES PAIRS BLOWN AWAY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 – Lee Zii Jia once again showed his inconsistency but survived to make the men’s singles quarter-finals at the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain but faces another tough Dane hurdle for a place in the semi-finals.
Zii Jia, who has admitted that he lacks mental strength, struggled to beat 35-year-old Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-15, 15-21, 21-10 in a 58 minute encounter, riding on Dane’s match fitness for victory.
In the quarter-finals on Friday, the 23-year-old Malaysian faces the aggressive third ranked Anders Antonsen, who is only 24-year-old.
He is the reigning European champion. Zii Jia is the reigning SEA Games champion.
Meanwhile, two national men’s doubles pairs were shown the exit.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, seeded fourth in Huelva, were knocked out by Chinese No 16 seeds He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang 17-21, 21-14, 21-16 in 50 minutes.
Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani fell to Tokyo Olympics champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei 21-18, 17-21, 21-18 in a match that lasted 68 minutes.
Two professional pairs – Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi – however, kept Malaysia’s interest alive after winning their respective second round matches in three games.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi downed India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 22-20, 18-21, 21-15 in 68 minutes while V Shem-Wee Kiong got the better of Bjarre Geiss-Jan Colin Volker of Germany 21-14, 14-21, 21-17.

Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie stayed alive in the mixed doubles with a three-game 21-8, 19-21, 21-19 win over Hong Kong China’s Yeung Ming Nok-Ng Tsz Yau and will meet second seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai for a place in the last four.
However, two other pairs – Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See fell in the third round.
The men’s singles also saw three Indians – led by former World No 1 K. Srikanth – making the quarter-finals.
The others who advanced are Prannoy HS and Lakshya Sen. Singapore’s Penang-born Loh Kean Yew also advanced to the quarters.
