Ygor Coelho
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 – Brazilian Ygor Coelho gave Malaysian hope Lee Zii Jia a run for his money and a strong message before bowing out in the BWF World Championships in a three game thriller in a second round match on Wednesday.
Zii Jia, the All-England champion, toiled for 58 minutes to subdue Coelho  21-14, 22-24, 21-14 in Huelva, Spain at the world meet that has been hit by a spate of withdrawals, including Kento Momota and the entire Indonesian team.
The World Championships has also lost its glamour status with the surprise defeats of World No 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.
In the third round on Thursday, Denmark veteran Hans-Kristian Vittinghus advanced with a three-game 11-21, 21-13, 21-17 win over Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in 63 minutes – never giving up even when the chips were down.
It was a big relief for Zii Jia when he clinched the match against the Brazilian. With a clenched fist, the Malaysian let a loud yell that he is still alive at the championships. Zii Jia, however, will have to up his game to continue his journey in Huelva.
In another men’s singles match Malaysian professional Liew Daren blamed his ”lack of fitness and power” in the game in his straight game defeat to India’s Prannoy HS in 42 minutes. The Indian won 21-7, 21-17.
Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong defeated Japan’s Hiroki Okamura-Masayuki Onodera in the men’s doubles.
The Malaysians, who are playing their final tournament as a professional pair, advanced with a 21-15, 22-24, 21-16 win in 66 minutes.
The former world number one and Asian Games champions, had a first round bye and next face the German pair of Bjarne Geiss-Jan Colin Volker.
Fourth seeds Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik also got into the fray but were taken the full distance before getting past China’s Ou Xuan Yi-Zhang Nan with a hard fought 21-19, 20-22, 21-16 win.
However, it was a delight to see top Malaysian pair strutting their stuff with good chemistry during the 56 minutes they were on the court.
Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik have another Chinese wall scale in the next round when they face sixth seeds He Jiting-Tan Qiang who beat the English pair of Callum Hemming-Steven Stallwood 16-21, 21-12, 21-12.
Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, the sixth seeds in the mixed doubles, roared to a straight game 21-13, 21-16 win over Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh-Supisarra Paewsampran in 31 minutes.
It is a morale boosting win the Malaysian pair who next play Hong Kong China’s Yeung Ming Nok-Ng Tsz Yau.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 – Malaysians face tough, tough hurdles in round three at the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain after coming through their second round matches on Tuesday.
Men’s doubles Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were not at their best and made heavy weather of their match against Scotland’s Alexander Dunn-Adam Hall before prevailing 21-14, 19-21, 21-16 in a 55-minute match.
The 14th seeded Malaysians struggled in their game with their game but steadied their boat and kept their composure to subdue the taller Scots.
The Malaysian number two pair, however, will have to scale a mountain to keep their challenge in the world meet alive when they face Tokyo Olympics champions and third seeds Lee Yang-Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei in the third round.
No 9 seeds Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi slumped in their second game against Denmark’s Joel Eipe-Rasmus Kjaer but hit a purple patch at the right time – coming down from 10-18 down to carve out a 21-12, 21-19 win 39 minutes.

THERE IS STILL LIGHT MALAYSIA MUST BEAT INDONESIA TO STAY ALIVE AFTER DEFEAT TO VIETNAM

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 – With their backs against the wall after the “painful” defeat to defending champions Vietnam – their first in three matches – national football coach Tan Cheng Hoe has not given up hope of a semi-final berth in the AFF Suzuki Cup in Singapore.
The Harimau Malaya fell 3-0 and this has left Cheng Hoe and the team in a tight situation. This means Malaysia must beat Indonesia in their final Group B match at the Bishan Stadium on Sunday (Dec 19).
To many, the crushing defeat spells the end of Malaysia’s campaign in the AFF Suzuki Cup. Cheng Hoe, however, begs to differ. As long there is hope Harimau Malaya will be there to keep their challenge.
Cheng Hoe sees light at the end of the tunnel despite the odds.
Skipper Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and Shahrul Saad picked up hamstring injuries. Aidil lasted only 21 minutes and Shahrul went out after 70 minutes. Of the two, Aidil “looks bad” says Cheng Hoe.
With a week to go before the Indonesia match, Cheng Hoe has a silent prayer for the duo recover. The arrival of Dion Cools in time for the Indonesia match, Cheng Hoe hopes to plus the holes in the shaky backline.
Still reeling from the defeat to Vietnam, Cheng Hoe admits that Malaysia lost the match because the players gave “too much respect” to their opponents.
“All the goals were conceded during transition…a team like Vietnam that played in the World Cup qualifier playoffs had the edge over us. Vietnam capitalised on our shortcomings,” added Cheng Hoe.
However, Cheng Hoe is not letting that demoralising defeat stand in Malaysia’s way when there is still hope.
Malaysia will cling to that hope although netizens have once again got to work and written off the team.
While not wanting to harp on what is said on social media, Cheng Hoe did not hide his disappointment that some individuals have been nailed by the netizens for defeats.
The former international reminded that  “football is a team game” and not individuals.
On a plus note, Cheng Hoe, said Khairul Azhan, Faisal Halim and Quintin Cheng have started training after getting the greenlight from the authorities. The trio were tested positive for Covid-19.
According to Cheng Hoe, all three train separately from the rest of the team.
However, Akhyar Rashid is still isolated. Akhyar was voted the Man of the Match when he helped Malaysia beat Cambodia 3-1 in their opening match on Dec 6.

NIGHTMARE IN BISHAN AS VIETNAM HIT MALAYSIA 3-0

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 – Malaysia’s injury list continued to grow as defending champions Vietnam crushed Malaysia 3-0 in a Group B AFF Suzuki Cup match at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore on Sunday.
It was Malaysia’s first defeat in three matches after winning 3-1 over Cambodia and Laos 4-0 in their first two matches.
The defeat also plunged Malaysia to third place in the group from the top spot.
Despite the defeat, Malaysia’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals in the Asean meet are very much alive but face a mammoth task and will have to beat Indonesia in their final group match on Dec 19. In an earlier match Indonesia hammered Laos 5-1.
Already depleted with four positive Covid-19 cases in the team which “knocked” out Khairul Azhan Khalid, Faisal Halim (who have since completed their 10-day quarantine on Saturday, Dec 11), Quentin Cheng and Akhyar Rashid (still under quarantine), there was more bad news for coach Tan Cheng Hoe.
Skipper Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and Shahrul Saad left gaping holes in the backline when they had to leave the match against Vietnam with injuries.
Aidil lasted on 21 minutes and was replaced by Dominic Tan while Shahrul went out after 70 minutes.
After the break, Cheng Hoe replaced Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin with Guilherme De Paula and R. Kogileswaran came in for Mukhairi Ajmal.
The changes brought some changes in Malaysia’s overall performance compared to the first half.
Vietnam scored two quick goals when Nguyen Quang Hai netted the first after 32 minutes. Four minutes later the score line read 2-0 for Vietnam when Nguyen Cong Phuong fired a blistering shot past Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.
In the 89th minute Vietnam hammered the final nail into the coffin – this time it was Nguyen Huang Duc drilled home a stiff grounder after finding gap in the Malaysian defense.
“We were focused in the first half and paid heavy price,” said Cheng Hoe after the match, adding the team has a week to rest before the next match.
“Hopefully, the injuries to Aidil and Shahrul are not serious. At the same time we hope that those under quarantine for the virus will be given the greenlight to play.”

THE BIG MATCH AGAINST VIETNAM

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 – National football head coach Tan Cheng Hoe can expect a fiery match against defending champions Vietnam in Sunday’s Group B match at the AFF Suzuki Cup Asean Championships at Bishan Stadium, Singapore.
This is the first night match for the Malaysians after playing Cambodia and Laos in late afternoon matches and won both – with 3-1 and 4-0 margins respectively.
However, although the match will be played in cooler conditions, Harimau Malaya. it is already blowing “hot” after Vietnam’s South Korean coach Park Hang Seo questioned Malaysia’s request for replacements and the AFF gave the greenlight for goalkeeper Khairul Azhan Khalid.
Khairul Azhan is one of the four Malaysian players who have been tested positive for Covid-19.
He and flanker Faisal Halim were tested positive when the team arrived on Dec 3. Both completed their 10-day on Saturday (Dec 11).
Two other Malaysian players – Akhyar Rashid and Quentin Chen – were also tested positive  after Malaysia’s match against Cambodia on Dec 6 and are currently under quarantine.
Putting that aside, Cheng Hoe has called on his players to “cut out individual mistakes and go in with confidence” against the defending champions, apart from tightening up the defense.
‘”Vietnam has a strong defense, quality players when it comes to technical and tactical abilities. However, we too have players with individual skills…players who can make it count when it matters most,” said Cheng Hoe, who also revealed that Junior Eldstal will be a non-starter against Vietnam because of injury.
Let’s not forget that Malaysia has a score to settle with the Golden Dragons.
The two met in the final in the 2018 edition. The score was 2-2 in the first-leg in Kuala Lumpur but Vietnam snatched a 1-0 win in the return-leg in Hanoi to take the silverware 3-2 on aggregate.
In the first two matches Malaysia also won the Man of the Match award.
Akhyar Rashid won against Cambodia and Safawi Rasid was the winner after scoring a hattrick.

NIGHT OF EMOTIONS FOR COACH CHENG HOE

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 – Malaysia’s thumping 4-0 win over Laos in a Group B match at the AFF Suzuki Cup at the Bishan Stadium, Singapore on Thursday with an ill-prepared team is a “tonic” of relief for Harimau Malaya – especially head coach Tan Cheng Hoe.
The win kept Malaysia’s unbeaten record after two matches. The former international, however, was lost in his emotions, knowing that it has been a rocky path for his team arriving in the Lion City on Dec 5.
Despite the two wins in their opening two matches – (3-1 over Cambodia on Dec 6) followed by the 4-0 win over Laos, Cheng Hoe is well aware that he has to make do with a dwindled squad – after some players were tested positive for Covid-19.
Khairul Azhan Khalid (goalkeeper) and Faisal Halim (flanker) were the first to fall victim to the virus and have yet to be released from their 10-day quarantine since arriving.
There was more to come before the match against Laos when Quentin Cheng and Akhyar Rashid were also tested positive and still under quarantine.
A testing time for Cheng Hoe and his coaching staff. Match strategies have come under close scrutiny for Cheng Hoe and company.
So far so good but the real test for Cheng Hoe will come when the Malaysians play Vietnam this Sunday and Indonesia on Dec 19 to complete their round robin group preliminaries.
When asked if he had a good sleep after the big win over Laos or had a sleepless night with Covid-19 taking its toll on the team, Cheng Hoe had this to say:
“It was a combination of both, frankly.” said Cheng Hoe from Singapore adding that what comes next is a great challenge. “The nagging thought of the virus affecting your players is very disturbing.”
Obviously, Cheng Hoe is referring to Malaysia’s “COVID -19” situation that has crippled the team in Singapore. However, the show must go for Cheng Hoe and Harimau Malaya.
For now he has a prayer in his heart and keeping his fingers crossed that there won’t be anymore victims of the virus and at the same time hoping that the team will not be hit by injuries in the Asean Championships.
“I  hope the players will keep their composure and remain motivated. They (the players) have displayed a  high level of commitment despite the odds…the unity is second to none and they are steadfast in loyalty.”
Malaysia finished runners-up at the last edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup, losing 3-2 on aggregate. The first-leg in Kuala Lumpur ended in a 2-2 draw and Vietnam clinched the title with a 1-0 win in the return-leg in Hanoi.
The Harimau Malaya won the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010 – the year Safee Sali also clinched the Golden Boot with five goals as the top scorer in the tournament.
“The wins (against Cambodia and Laos) has boosted the confidence of the players. Let us count on this and ride on the momentum in the remaining two matches in the group,” added Cheng Hoe.

SAFAWI’S BISHAN BLAST TIMELY

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 – National striker Safawi Rasid will remember Bishan Stadium in Singapore and December 9, 2021 for the hattrick he struck in Malaysia’s 4-0 win over Laos in a Group B match at AFF Suzuki Cup.
It warmed the hearts of Malaysians who watched the match live on television and also those who were at the stadium in the late afternoon match.
It was Malaysia’s second win in a row in the Asean Championships, having beaten Cambodia 3-1 in their first match.
The 24-year-old Safawi, who hails from Dungun, Terengganu and plays for Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) in the Malaysian League, was all smiles.
The glow on his face spoke of his delight in helping Malaysia win the match – a real morale and confidence booster before Malaysia face Vietnam at the same venue on Sunday (Dec 12).
Speaking at a post match conference, Safawi was a bundle of confidence and was quick to point out that he never ever claimed he was a “superstar” at any time in his professional football career.
“I never said I am superstar…you can check my past interviews. I thank Allah for giving me back my form. My teammates and my coaches also played a big role in getting me into shape. The three goals against Laos has reignited my desire and my confidence.
“It means a lot to me after my recent drop in form. So, I am naturally happy to have helped the team win.
“However, I am not getting carried away with the three goals against Laos as we still have tough matches ahead. Hopefully, I will be able to deliver again when we play Vietnam on Sunday,” said Safawi.
In the match against Laos, Safawi struck his first in the seventh minute and second in the 34th. He completed his hattrick on 80 minutes after Shahrul Saad had scored Malaysia’s third in the 78th minute.
With his three-goal blast against Laos, Safawi is the top scorer in this year’s AFF Suzuki Cup with four goals. He also scored a goal against Cambodia in Malaysia’s 3-1 win.
In the 2010 edition, Safee Sali won the Golden Boot with five goals.

MALAYSIA BLAST LAOS 4-0 FOR SECOND WIN IN AFF SUZUKI CUP

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 – On a day when two more players – Akhyar Rashid and Quentin Cheng were quarantined after testing positive for Covid-19, the Harimau Malaya roared to a 4-0 win over Laos to stay unbeaten in Group B in the AFF Suzuki Cup in Singapore.
It was Malaysia’s second win at the Bishan Stadium, having beaten Cambodia 3-0 in their opening match.
Malaysia’s remaining two matches in the group are against Vietnam on Sunday (Dec 12) and Indonesia on Dec 19.
The day belonged to Safawi Rasid who notched a hattrick – with the first two doses coming in the first half and completed his booster shot with Malaysia’s fourth in the 78th minute. Defender Shahrul Saad scored the third.
Head coach Tan Cheng Hoe made several changes to his starting lineup for the Cambodia bench. Naturalized Malaysian Guilherme De Paul started from the bench. Also missing was Junior Eldstal and Akhyar Rashid.
Brazilian-born De Paula did come on in the last 10 minutes of play, replacing Safawi.
R. Kogileswaran came on for Luqman and Shahrul replaced skipper Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak.
Laos looked threatening in the first five minutes but once Safawi got his first on seven minutes it cooled the Malaysian nerves.
Safawi, was at the right place near the far post to tap in a cross from Arif Aiman on the left.
Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin was also in scoring position but the Belgium-based player missed connecting and Safawi made it count.
It was 2-0 for Malaysia in the 34th minute. Arif was again in the provider when his corner kick to the far post saw Safawi rise high to send a dipping header into the Laos net – catching goalkeeper Oudone Sovanasasangso off guard.
Laos, coached by Singapore V. Selvaraj, but their early firepower fizzled out after Malaysia’s first goal. Once the Harimau Malaya got the first goal and got into stride in their game, it also brought confidence to the team.
Shahrul, who had a long layoff due to a knee injury, was a mobbed by his teammates when he scored Malaysia’s third goal in the 78th minute when he raced up front to receive Baddrol Bakhtiar’s long ball. The former Perak player who now plays for JDT, fired a grounder into the Laos net and Oudone was outdone again.
Safawi completed his hattrick two minutes later – finishing off a long ball from Kogileswaran with a left footer. Malaysia 4-0 and now for Vietnam on Sunday.
In another Group B match played at the same venue. Indonesia defeated Cambodia 4-2.
