0
KUALA LUMPUR, 16 Oct – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), together with the Qatar Football Association (QFA), have today confirmed Doha, Qatar as the venue for this year’s AFC Champions League single leg final which will be held on December 19.
With the successful conclusion of the AFC Champions League 2020 (West) in Qatar recently, as well as the upcoming preparations to host the East region matches next month, the AFC noted that the QFA met all the necessary hosting capability, capacity and medical infrastructure to host the Final of Asia’s premier club competition.
AFC General Secretary, Datuk Windsor John (pic) said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly made the decision on the venue for this year’s final more complex particularly in these uncertain times of travel and health restrictions.
“In addition to the numerous restrictions, the AFC also wanted to protect the important principle of sporting fair play. This will be, unlike previous years, a one-off final and we therefore needed to ensure that there was no unfair advantage to one team or the other.
“The safety and wellbeing of all participating clubs as well as the protection of all stakeholders has been crucial to the AFC, so we must thank the Qatar Football Association and the Qatar Local Authorities and Ministries for putting in place the necessary health measures and effective medical protocols.
“The successful staging of the AFC Champions League (West) is testament to the capability of the QFA and the Qatar Government and we now look forward to building on the spirit of collaboration as we prepare to resume the captivating action from the East Group Stage to the Final.”
Additionally, the AFC also had to consider the ability of the host to deliver such requirements among others, the Video Assistant Referee technical arrangements, medical requirements and commercial obligations.
QFA Secretary General Mansoor Mohammed Al-Ansari, said: “Given the success of hosting the centralised West region matches in close collaboration with the AFC, and the preparation for the centralised East matches next month, we are confident that we will be able to deliver an outstanding AFC Champions League Final.
“Qatar wishes to reiterate our commitment to provide world-class sporting infrastructure and operational and health and safety expertise and we look forward towards working hand-in-hand with the AFC to offer Asia’s best clubs with the ultimate stage in December.”
The AFC Champions League East region Group Stage will kick-off on November 18 before the Round of 16 takes place on December 6 and 7.

AFC CUP SLOT IS AIDIL SHARIN’S BARGAINING TRUMP CARD

0
PETALING JAYA, 14 Oct – Taking Kedah to second place in the shortened Malaysian Super League which came with a place in next year’s AFC Cup is an achievement for Singaporean coach Aidil Sharin Sahak and his Red Eagles can be proud of.
More so, when the Kedah team went five months without salary – an issue which was “kept under wraps” until it exploded in the media.
It shocked the Malaysian football fraternity as Kedah had won the FA Cup last year and had a somewhat ”clean” management that was prudent until then.
Things, however, got positive when there was a change of the state leadership and the political scenario and this brought the positives after some delay.
The Menteri Besar is also the Kedah FA president and in this case, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor took over the reins from former Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and he settled overdue accounts which amounted close to RM15 million.
When Kedah beat Perak 3-2 in their final league match which was played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh last Sunday, Aidil became a hot topic as his name was closely linked to a move to Perak after the team fell to a 7-0 defeat against Johor Darul Takzim (JDT).
Many Perakians took to the social media calling for coach Mehmet Durakovic’s removal although the Australian has a contract with the Bos Gaurus until the end of 2021.
Durakovic’is reportedly the highest-paid coach in the M-League.
Aidil was also a hot-link when Selangor unceremoniously dumped head coach B. Satianathan when the Red Giants also suffered a big defeat to JDT.
The Southern Tigers won the match 6-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.
However, Aidil’s link to Selangor died down when the Selangor FA management settled for a German and named its Technical Director, Micheal Feichentenneiner as caretaker coach. He was also the coach of Selangor’s feeder squad Selangor 2.
”I can safely say my heart is with Kedah…say 90 percent. I love the place, the players, team officials, and the fans who have been through thick and thin. They have been very supportive and played a big role in our achievements so far,” said Aidil.
“Still, we (Kedah FA and me) need to discuss the future of football in Kedah. It also spells my career as a young coach. We need to know what the future holds for both parties. There must be chemistry to move forward and this is very important.”
The former Singaporean international who took over the Kedah hot seat last year and led the team to the FA Cup title is reportedly in demand for the new season.
He claims to have received offers from teams from all four corners of the country.
For sure his credentials have soared after Kedah finished second in the Super League which was shortened to one round due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
His next target is the prestigious and much sought after silverware – the Malaysia Cup.
Aidil and the Kedah FA management is expected to meet soon to decide what is best for the new season for both parties.
One thing for sure – Aidil has marketed himself well despite the crisis in Kedah. His credentials have soared to a new high and it is left to be seen who wins the bargaining.

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Oct – With the spike in the Covid-19 cases in Malaysia and the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) imposed in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Sabah, the Malaysia Cup competition has been postponed to November.
The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has announced that “health takes priority” for all concerned and the oldest football competition in this region – the Malaysia Cup first round has now been rescheduled to Nov 6, 7, and 8. The draw is scheduled to be held on Nov 1.
The quarter-final matches will be held on Nov 12-13 with the semi-finals slated for Nov 17. The final is scheduled for Nov 22. The changes were announced by the MFL supremo Datuk Abdul Ghani Hassan.
Defending champions, Johor Darul Takzim (JDT), last year’s runners-up Kedah, Terengganu FC, Perak, Selangor, Pahang, Petaling Jaya City FC, Melaka United, UiTM FC, Sabah and Felda United are the team from the Super League.

THE TURTLES WANT TO DO BETTER IN THE MALAYSIA CUP

0
PETALING JAYA, 12 Oct – Finishing third in the Super League behind champions Johor Darul Takzim and runners-up Kedah is certainly a confidence booster for Terengganu when they compete in the prestigious Malaysia Cup competition.
The Turtles were never given hopes of a top-three finish in the elite Super League but this they did in style with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over neighbors Pahang at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu on Sunday.
It was enough to clinch third place with 19 points when Kedah defeated Perak 3-2 at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.
The Perak-Kedah match decided the second spot with Kedah on 22 points while Perak had to settle for the fourth spot.
”It is something we can be proud of…a top-three finish. Many did not give the young Terengganu team any hopes of finishing in the top bracket especially when we had a young team.
”’The experience of playing in the Super League will come in handy for the team. It will stand in good stead for the young players when playing in the Malaysia Cup,” said Terengganu head coach Nafuzi Zain, a former international.
At the completion of the Super League, Kedah earned the slot to compete in the AFC Cup as runners-up to JDT, who will play in the AFC Champions League. This is the seventh successive year the Southern Tigers have won the Malaysian Super League title.
“It was a tremendous team effort and the young players showed their commitment on the field although we had our off days too when the league resumed,” added Nafuzi.

KEDAH TAKES AFC CUP SLOT AFTER A 3-2 WIN OVER PERAK

0
PETALING JAYA, 11 Oct – Kedah needed only a draw to confirm their runners-up spot in the Malaysian Super League behind champions Johor Darul Takzim but the Red Eagles came off 3-2 winners over Perak in their match played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Sunday.
It was certainly a bad night for Perak. The defeat saw Perak slip to fourth place in the 12-team league shortened to one round due to the Covid-19 pandemic after Terengganu beat Pahang 2-1 at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu.
With the win and second spot with 22 points, Kedah secured the slot for the AFC Cup while Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim will carry Malaysia’s challenge in the AFC Champions League.
It was heartbreak for Perak who needed a win to finish second in the league but the homesters were 2-0 down by the 31st minute with goals by Liberian ace Kpah Sherman and Fadzrul Daniel in the 28th and 31st minutes respectively.
Perak came back strong and reduced the deficit on 42 minutes with a twice-taken penalty. Brazilian Leandro Dos Santos scored from the second attempt after Kedah keeper Azri Ghani was hauled up for an infringement after stopping Shahrel Fikri’s spot-kick.
The homesters drew level before the halftime break when Leandro scored again – this time with a header off a freekick by Shahrel to throw his team a lifeline.
However, it was Kedah who came out stronger for the second half. Renan Alves turned hero for Kedah when he headed the winner off a corner kick by Baddrol Bakhtiar in the 63rd minute.
