The AFC Champions League (East) which will be played between November 18 and December 13 2020, follows the successful completion of the AFC Champions League (West) in Qatar.
The AFC General Secretary, Datuk Windsor John said: “We are extremely grateful for the outstanding support of the QFA and are pleased that we can now build on the success of the AFC Champions League (West) while looking forward to the remaining exciting matches in Asia’s premier club competition.
“We recognise the huge amount of work undertaken by the QFA, in conjunction with the AFC, the Qatar Local Authorities and Ministries, to ensure the smooth delivery of the AFC Champions League (West) and we look forward to a similarly positive collaboration for the AFC Champions League (East).

THE BIG SHOWDOWN IN IPOH TO DECIDE AFC CUP SLOT

0
PETALING JAYA, 9 Oct – The coronavirus pandemic takes a backseat for two footballing rivals – Perak and Kedah – when they clash at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Sunday in a match that offers big stakes – a place in next year’s AFC Cup.
Kedah needs only a draw to lay that claim while Perak needs a win after the Red Eagles defeated Melaka United 1-0 in their last match that gave them 19 points and second spot in the league standings.
Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) has already won the Super League title for an unprecedented seventh successive time that came with a place in the AFC Champions League.
This leaves Kedah and Perak to battle it out for the AFC Cup.
Perak coach Mehmet Durakovic, impressed with his team’s performance against Pahang, however, has a mammoth task in defense without his influential and inspiring skipper Shahrul Saad. The international is suspended for the Kedah match.
“It will be a tough match…a lot is at stake. Both teams want a win to finish second in the league standings and with that comes the coveted AFC Cup slot. That sums up the big clash in Ipoh,” said the Australian, reportedly the high paid coach in the Malaysian League.
Still, Durakovic is not letting the absence of Shahrul stand in Perak’s way and he has confidence in his players to carry the challenge.
“There is the pride and I know whoever takes the field will not shirk his responsibility. The match against Pahang showed what Perak is capable of and I expect another epic encounter.”
If there is one plus factor for Durakovic is the return of Brazilian striker Guilherme de Paulo from injury. The Brazilian has been shaping up well in training and Perak can count on the lanky Guilherme to deliver.
After Kedah’s win, Perak dropped a rung below with 18 points but showed that they have the stuff to take up the challenge after a tremendous fighting spirit saw the Bos Gauros snatch a 3-3 draw – coming back from a 3-0 first-half deficit against Pahang away.

KEDAH AND PERAK TO DECIDE AFC SLOT

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Oct – A 1-0 win over Melaka United at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on Monday sent Kedah to the second spot in the Super League standings with a 20th-minute header by defender Shakir Hamzah settling the outcome.
The Singapore international’s power-packed header from a corner-kick set-piece was enough for the Red Eagles to take 19 points – one point ahead of Perak who slipped to the third spot in the league already won by Johor Darul Takzim for the seventh-year running after a 4-1 win over Sabah last week.
Kedah and Perak will complete their league fixtures this Saturday at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh. The Red Eagles need only a point to finish second and clinch a place in the AFC Cup. JDT will compete in the AFC Champions League by virtue of winning the Malaysian League.
For Melaka, it was their second successive defeat after going down to Sabah at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Sept 27.
The match against Kedah was postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was rescheduled to KLFA Stadium at the request of Melaka.

REVINGTON IS BACK TO COMPLETE HIS ‘UNFINISHED BUSINESS’

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 – South African Paul Revington who took Malaysia to the World Cup in 2014 in The Hague is back and has been appointed as the technical director for development by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC).
The 47-year-old who quit the team in a huff before the World Cup in The Hague revealed that ”it was due to health reasons” and not due to internal strife in the coaching setup was unveiled as director for development by MHC supremo, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal on Monday.
“I am back as I have some unfinished business to complete in Malaysian hockey. The opportunity comes again and here I am as there is still the drive and passion to take Malaysian hockey forward,” said Revington who resigned as the women’s elite development program coach in England to take up the job in Malaysia.
Subahan describes Revington “as the best man to develop grassroots” in Malaysia as the nation sets eyes on a six-year plan to win the men’s and women’s hockey gold in Asian Games.
Just like newly appointed men’s head coach A. Arulselvaraj, the South African has stressed on the “winning mentality” with him starting at the grassroots for a smooth transition when the players move up the ladder.
For the record when Revington quit the national team before World Cup in The Hague, the team was handled by K. Dharmaraj and Malaysia finished last in 12th place.
“Revington is the best man to develop grassroots as he is well versed with the Malaysian culture…he fits the bill. We could not find anyone better for the job,” said Subahan.
For starters, Revington wants to build solid coaching and training systems at the grassroots.

DOLLAH BAFFLED BY THE SUBSTITUTES

0
PETALING JAYA, 4 Oct – Selangor’s caretaker German coach Michael Feichtenbeiner was blowing his own trumpet after a 7-0 win over relegated and winless Police but the real drama was in Kuantan where Pahang blew a 3-0 lead to settle for a 3-3 draw with Perak in Saturday’s Super League matches.
Nothing to shout about Selangor’s big win as it was expected who had only two points to show after 10 matches and scored only four and conceded a massive 25.
On top of that Police have a minus one point.
Feichtenbeiner spoke of his ”attacking football” against a demoralized side – with the Red Giants scoring a brace through Sean Selvaraj while Ifedayo Olusegun, Brendan Gan, Safuwan Baharudin and Rufino Segovia scored one each.
In Kuantan, Pahang coach Dollah Salleh made five changes after the break and it was a complete change of fortunes for the Elephants who led 3-0 in the first half with Dinesh Rajbanshi (8th minute), Nik Haseefy (27th) and Ivan Carlos (41st) getting their names into te score sheet.
Dollah was baffled as Pahang simply lost the rhythm after the break as Perak grew in confidence when J. Partiban fired a left footer past Helmi Eliza Elias on 48 minutes.
Shahrel Fikri made 2-1 after 84 minutes before another of Partiban’s left footer into the right corner of the net was enough for Perak to share the spoils and retain their second place in the league.
“I made five changes for the second half but we simply lost the rhythm after that. The teamwork collapsed and with that, we lost the flow of our game,” said a disappointed Dollah.
His Perak counterpart Mehmet Durakovic was one happy man in Kuantan and reaped praises on his team for the ”tremendous fightback” that kept his team in the race for the second spot and a place in the AFC Cup.

‘HOPE MY LEFT FOOT WILL NOT DESERT ME’ – SAFAWI

0
JOHOR BAHRU, 3 Oct – His deadly left foot saw him score a brace in Johor Darul Takzim’s (JDT) 4-2 win over Sabah in the last home match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Friday and the seventh successive Super League title for the Southern Tigers.
Hours later, the 23-year-old from Dungun, Terengganu bade an emotional farewell to club owner, His Royal Highness Brigadier General Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim with high hopes of taking his football career to new heights.
JDT’s prized possession and a national asset is embarking on a possible football career in Europe.
He will be on loan to join Portugal’s Primeira Liga side Portimonense S.C and hopes to break into the big-time league with the Portuguese club.
There were more emotions at the KLIA when he bade farewell to his family and friends before boarding a midnight flight to Portugal on Saturday.
“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to further my football career. I hope to make good and do my (football) career good. Hopefully, my left foot will not desert me,” said the striker who kept his emotions in check for the media interview.
The skillful Safawi has already made a name for himself in this region and has received rave reports on his football skills.
Football pundits believe that Europe is the right place for Safawi to take his football skills, maturity, and experience a notch higher.
“I am going on loan to Portimonense for one season. The rest is left to be seen but I hope to make the best of this opportunity given to me. It could be the beginning of my ‘new’ career in the game.”
With the Super League title already in the bag, the Malaysian football kingpins are strong favorites to win the Malaysia Cup.
JDT has stamped their authority and showed they are the “untouchables”  in the league and complete their curtailed league fixtures with an away match against Melaka United on Oct 10.

TMJ THE ‘PLAYER’ WHO MADE IT HAPPEN FOR JDT – MORA

0
JOHOR BAHRU, 3 Oct – Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) who clinched the Malaysian Super League title for the seventh consecutive time on Sunday after a 4-1 win over Sabah owes it all to the club owner His Royal Highness Brigadier General Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.
The Crown Prince of Johor who took over the club in 2013 and a year later clinched the league title – transforming JDT into a football powerhouse in the country as the Southern Tigers brushed aside big names like Selangor, Kedah, Perak, Terengganu and Kelantan.
JDT became a brand name in the country as the Southern Tigers and thus began the reign of the Johor outfit and along the way established professionalism in every aspect of the game – both on and off the pitch.
The team also won the Charity Shield five times – in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 while they won the Malaysia Cup twice (2017 and 2019) and the FA Cup in 2016.
In the continental championships JDT won the AFC Cup in 2015 – the first Malaysian team to achieve that success.
JDT was never in doubt of landing their seventh league title and the 4-1 win over Sabah at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri was testimony of JDT’s supremacy on the field at the state of the art stadium.
Coach Benjamin Mora said after the win over Sabah: “We had the eagerness and mentality to win” – and this, according to Mora, made all the difference for the team.
In the same breath the Mexican was quick to point out that “one player” who made or rather makes all the difference to the JDT team is ”TMJ” (Tunku Ismail).
“TMJ is the key player in JDT…we owe our success to him. Without him it would have been difficult for JDT’s achievements so far. There is still lot more to do as we look to win more titles, both, local and international.”
The Super League title confirmed JDT’s place in the AFC Champions League for new season and JDT is not going to rest on its laurels with the Malaysia Cup competition next on te list for MFL.
”I am emotional winning the (Super League) title. I am happy to play my small part and be part of the winning team. My stay here has been memorable and I have been here five years…so the emotions.”
The Mexican also revealed that JDT missed its “family” in celebrating the seventh league title and this “family” is the fans who had to follow the strict SOP due to the Coronavirus pandemic. He described the Covid-19 pandemic as “‘difficult times” for him but he did enough for JDT to retain the league title.
JDT’s last match is away against Melaka United on Oct 10.

JDT IS KING OF MALAYSIAN SUPER LEAGUE WITH THEIR SEVENTH TITLE

0
JOHOR BAHRU, 2 Oct – Winning their seventh consecutive Malaysian Super League title has put Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) among the elites and a feat hard to emulate by others after the Johor outfit hammered Sabah 4-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri – their new home this season.
The win gave Southern Tigers the title with an unbeaten record although the league was shortened to one round.
JDT finished on top with 26 points from 10 matches with Perak with a game in hand settled in second place with 17 points. Kedah also has a game in hand is third with 16 points.
It was a slow start for the homesters and needed 38 minutes to open scoring despite a dominant performance against Sabah who tried their best to match in every aspect of the game.
The floodgates opened when Afiq Fazail relayed the ball to Diogo Luis Santo for a simple tap past Sabah custodian, Rozaimi Rohim.
Until the goal, Diogo was a frustrated player on the pitch and was even involved in a shoving incident with his marker Mafy Balang.
Local hot-shot, Safawi Rasid got into the scoring act on 58 minutes with an unstoppable left-footer into the Sabah net from just outside the penalty box but the East Malaysian side pulled one back in the 74th-minute through their Thai striker Dennis Buschening.
JDT shrugged off the setback and Safawi got his second on the night from an assist by substitute Ramadhan Saifullah for a 3-1 lead after 81 minutes.
The fourth goal came quickly for JDT when Leandro Velazquez blasted home a freekick.
The Southern Tigers roared and the rest is history on a night when hundreds of JDT fans had the luxury of watching the match via ”In-Car Live Viewing” at the stadium parking area. Only those with car pass were allowed into the stadium compound.
In another match, Petaling Jaya City FC came from behind to beat UiTM 4-2 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium to keep their hopes alive to remain in the Super League.

ARUL’S PICK TO PUSH MALAYSIAN HOCKEY FORWARD

0
KUALA LUMPUR, 1 Oct – It is the beginning of a new journey for national hockey head coach A. Arulselvaraj when he named a 38-player squad on Thursday – picked after the end of the recent Razak Cup competition at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The Johor-born Arul who took over the hot seat from Roelant Oltmans when the Dutchman quit the team following Malaysia’s failure to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics is starting afresh to breathe new life into the game.
Swelling the training squad to 38 players gives Arul ”more options” when he trims the squad to 25 players.
More importantly, it will keep everyone in the training squad on their toes as Arul is looking at more than hockey skills.
“To be in my team the players will have to make a lot of personal ‘sacrifices’ which also includes family and friends. Discipline on and off the pitch is demanded. I have been given the mandate to rebuild the national hockey team.
“That journey begins now. New names have been included. Those who were dropped from the national team before will now get the chance to redeem their shortcomings. I have my own criteria when it came to selecting the players.
”Commitment, desire and hard work must be second to none,” said the Johor-born Arul who has given the Saari brothers Faizal (forward) and Fitri (midfield) a chance to win back their places in the team.
Another player who did not play in the Razak Cup due to a personal tragedy just before the tournament started – losing his two-year-old daughter Nur Ayra Delisha – pulled out from the Terengganu team to be with his wife who is expecting the couple’s second child.
Firhan, a forward, is described by Arul as a “good hockey player” who can still fight for his place in the team.
With 185 international caps to his credit, Firhan is an asset to Malaysian hockey as the team prepares for the Asian Champions Trophy now rescheduled to be held from March 11-19 2021 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Kuala Lumpur has the biggest number of players in the training squad with seven. Two of the KL players who have got the nod are Pavandip Singh and Harvinder Singh, both midfielders.
Razak Cup champions Perak and runners-up Terengganu, have six players each while Pahang has three players. Police, Perlis, Negri Sembilan, Sabah, and Johor have two players each while Selangor and Penang have one each.
