Mat Yo opened account for Sarawak United against Perak II.
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 10 – Sarawak United cleared a tough hurdle with a 3-0 win over Perak II in an afternoon match at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Wednesday for their second win in as many matches in Premier League.
After a 2-0 win over Kelantan United in their first match played at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka, the big win over Perak II is a boost to their confidence in the second-tier Premier League.
Sarawak United, however, was reduced to 10 players late in the game when Zahril Azri was given the marching orders for a second bookable offense in the 82nd minute. He was first booked 28 minutes into the match.
For head coach E. Elavarasan, it is ”’another important three points” in a long journey this season where the Hornbills have set a high target of a top-two finish which will guarantee the team a promotion to the elite Super League.
International Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, popularly known as Mat Yo, opened the scoring 36 minutes for a 1-0 lead at half-time. Terengganu-born Norshahrul has been having a good run with the team. He had a hand in both the goals against Kelantan United.
Uche Agba converted a penalty in the 75th minute to make it 2-0 for the team. The Nigerian hitman, however, was not finished yet. He scored a gem in the 84th minute with a cool lift with his left foot into the right corner from an acute angle inside the six-yard box to take his tally to three in two matches.
“The win is certainly a big confidence boost to the team. It is a positive result but we have to work better,” said Elavarasan who also played all his foreigners in the match with Brazilian midfielder Sandro Mendonca thrown into the fray midway in the second half.
Injured South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon passed a late fitness test for an ankle injury to start the game Sarawak United wanted to win badly.

SELANGOR FOOTBALL’S GERMAN DNA SUFFERS A DOUBLE BLOW

KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 9 – Big-spending Selangor FC walked off the pitch at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu with their tails between their legs after an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Terengganu FC in Tuesday’s Super League match.
The defeat came in the wake of Selangor’s 3-1 win over Sri Pahang in their first match played at home. For Terengganu, it was their second win in as many matches following their 2-1 win over UiTM FC 2-1 last week.
More embarrassing for the Red Giants was Terengganu scored all four goals on the night when defender Shahrul Nizam Ros Hasni turned the ball into his own net in the 74th minute to narrow the deficit for the visitors.
Terengganu opened the scoring on 35 minutes when Ghanaian Jordan Mintah rose high above his markers to head home a perfect cross from the left.
At the hour mark, it was a 2-0 lead for Terengganu when substitute Rahmat Makasuf drilled home a left-footer – with his second touch of the ball after coming on for the injured Faisal Halim seconds earlier.
Terengganu goalkeeper Rahadiazli Rahalim was in top form on a night when Selangor’s international Shahril Fikri rocked the right upright in the first half while Ifedayo Olusegun was not able to break through with any threatening move.
Selangor’s new Swiss signing Oliver Buff who scored a brace against Pahang was lost in the park.
Terengganu hammered the final nail into the Selangor coffin when substitute Hakimi Abdullah scored the third goal deep into four minutes of added time.
The Red Giants are coached by a German Karsten Neitzel who brought his German coaching staff.
It was an embarrassing day for Selangor football when the feeder squad Selangor 2 was beaten 2-1 by Negri Sembilan in a Premier League match at the Selayang Stadium. Selangor 2 is coached by another German – Michael Feichenbeiner, who is also the Selangor FA technical director.
Meanwhile, seven-time Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim was made to slog for their 2-0 win over newly-promoted Penang at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru. Leandro Velazquez (80th, penalty) Fernando Rodriguez (85th) were the scorers.
At the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar, Kedah defeated Sabah 2-0 for their first win in two matches after losing to JDT last week.

FITNESS TEST FOR KOREAN MIDFIELDER LEE CHANG-HOON

KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 9 – Sarawak United is hoping to ride on the team’s winning start in the Premier League and keep the momentum going when the East Malaysian outfit squares up against Perak II on Wednesday in a late afternoon match to be played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh (kickoff 4.45 pm).
Head coach E. Elavarasan has a bunch of experienced players in his squad – both local and foreign – and they can be counted upon to deliver. However, the prevailing current hot and humid conditions are a disturbing factor not only to Sarawak United but all teams playing late afternoon matches.
Elavarasan has not decided on his lineup against Perak II but has made it known that he will rotate his foreign legion for the first few matches. For the match against Perak II, his South Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon will be given a fitness test.
The Korean played a near full match against Kelantan United but was replaced in the last minutes of the game after taking a hard knock. Sarawak United won the match 2-0 at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka.
”Frankly, it is the prevailing weather conditions that are a concern. Still, we are ready to face the challenges and look towards another positive result,” said Elavarasan on his arrival in Ipoh with the team.
Foreign signings – defender Taylor Regan (Australia), striker Uche Agba (Nigeria), midfielder Sandro Mendonca (Brazil) plus Chang-hoon bring a wealth of experience with them having played for other teams in the M-League.
International Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, popularly known as Mat Yo, and goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee, are popular ”value-added” local buys who have added stability to the team this season.

ELAVARASAN TO ROTATE HIS FOREIGN PLAYERS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 8 – Former international Sharbinee Allawee gave a good account of himself in goal to help Sarawak United to a 2-0 win over Kelantan United FC in their opening Premier League match at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Sunday.
Terengganu-born Sharbinee was a last-minute signing by Sarawak United coach E. Elavarasan to tighten things up in the last line of defense.
The vastly experienced Sarbinee turned out to be a wise buy by the East Malaysian hopefuls as the team is eyeing a promotion to the Super League next season.
Sarawak United next plays Perak II and this is considered a tough one because the match will be played in the late afternoon. Perak II is also riding high with a 1-0 win over Kelantan FC in Kota Bharu in their first match.
It will be a test of character for both teams at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Wednesday. Elavarasan also revealed that he will rotate his foreign imports in the first couple of matches due to several factors.
Elavarasan

Topping the list is that players Sandro Mendonca and Uche Agba were late arrivals and only had a couple of training sessions after serving quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sandro a Brazilian midfielder came on as a substitute in the last 15 minutes of play against Kelantan United.

Uche scored Sarawak United’s second goal via a penalty after 32 minutes after Christie Jayaseelan had given his team the lead in the 12th minute.
”It is an afternoon match and the current hot and humid weather conditions will have a  bearing on the players. Perak II not only won against Kelantan FC but also played the match in the afternoon,” said Elavarasan after the team’s workout at the MAHSA University grounds on Monday.
Sarawak United left for Kuala Lumpur at around 2am on Monday after the match against Kelantan United.
”Sharbinee had a good game despite joining the team late. Taylor (Regan) and Mat Yo (Norshahrul Idlan Talaha) were in the thick of the action and so was Lee Chang-Hoon. We could have scored more in the second half if we had been sharper with the chances.”
Elavarasan gave credit to the team for winning the first match of the season. ”This is important (to win the first match) as it is usually difficult to play the first match,” added Elavarasan who is into his second season with Sarawak United.

WINNING START FOR SARAWAK UNITED IN PREMIER LEAGUE

Jayaseelan scored in the 12th minutes for Sarawak United.
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 7 – Sarawak United FC roared to a 2-0 win over Kelantan United in their opening Premier League match played at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Sunday.
Full points from the match against Kelantan United is a perfect start to the East Malaysian outfit and head coach E. Elavarasan in their bid to gain promotion to the Super League next season.
Sarawak United has undergone a massive revamp and has appointed former national coach B. Satiananthan as the technical director.
Christie Jayaseelan paved the way for the win with a 12th-minute goal. Nigerian hitman Uche Agba made it 2-0 on 32 minutes when he converted a penalty.
Elavarasan did not field his Brazilian midfielder Sandro Mendonca in his starting line-up but it did not matter on a night when Sarawak United dominated the proceedings.
”The first match is always a difficult one. So the win over Kelantan (United) is a good start for the team. It gives confidence to the players for the coming matches,” said Elavarasan after the win.
Sarawak United has also signed up experienced foreigners for the new season. Apart from Sandro, there is also the towering Australian defender Taylor Regan and Korean midfielder Lee Chang-hoon. Sandro and Taylor played for Selangor last season.
Sarawak United’s next match is away against Perak 2.
Meanwhile, Perak FC and Petaling Jaya City FC shared points with a scoreless draw in a Super League match played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.

BASEL HIGH FOR PEARLY-THINAAH WITH YONEX SWISS OPEN WOMEN’S DOUBLES TITLE

KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 7 – It was a fairy-tale run for unseeded Malaysian women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah when they nailed the Yonex Swiss Open Super 300 title with an inspiring 21-19, 21-12 win over third-seeded Stoeva sisters Gabriela and Stefanie of Bulgaria in the final in Basel on Sunday.
The Malaysians ranked 30 in the world, stunned the World No 14 opponents to pocket USD 11,060  in prize money that came with the title. The Bulgarian sisters settled for USD 5,320 for their efforts.
It is the first Super 300 for Pearly and Thinaah who have made great strides in their game since coming together in 2019.
The pair reached the quarter-finals in the Yonex Thailand Open and Toyota Thailand Open in Bangkok in January.
Winning the Swiss Open spells of bigger things for Pearly, 20, and Thinaah who is 23. They had dumped their senior compatriots and second seeds Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean in the semi-finals on Saturday – winning 10-21, 21-14, 21-16.
This is the first time they played against the experienced Bulgarians. Riding on their confidence boosted by reaching the final in Basel, the young Malaysians not only kept their composure but had superior court coverage.
They took the break at 11-3 in the first game but lapsed in concentration after that and allowed the Bulgarians back into the picture.
The Malaysians checked their nerves in time and won 21-19. It was an easier second game for Pearly and Thinaah who romped home 21-12 for the historic title win.
Meanwhile, top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won the men’s singles with an easy 21-16, 21-16 win over Thailand’s three-time junior world champion Kunlavit Vitidsarn in the final in 47 minutes.

David Rowley
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 6 – Newly promoted Penang made a winning start in the Super League with a 1-0 win over Kuala Lumpur City FC at the City Stadium with David Rowley snatching the winner in the 27th minute.
The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for KL City who beat Selangor 4-2 on penalties in the inaugural Caring Cup at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras last week.
Coach Bojan Hodak was a disappointed man as the visitors feel they were denied a penalty. However, Hodak refused to elaborate on it and let others judge what they saw.
At the Petaling Jaya Stadium, Selangor got their campaign to a winning start with a 3-1 over Sri Pahang with a brace by new Swiss signing, Olver Buff.
The other goal came from Shahril Fikri. Pahang’s consolation goal came from a freekick by Nor Azam Azih.
Melaka United escaped with a 1-1 draw against Sabah at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka. Sabah scored first Hamran Peter in the 45th minute before S. Kumaahran equalized on 63 minutes.
Terengganu FC staged a strong rally to beat UiTM FC 2-1 at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam with two late goals.
Fauzi Latif gave UiTM the lead before David Da Silva (77th) and Hakimi Abdulla (87th) hit the target for Terengganu.

YONEX SWISS OPEN: ZII JIA FALLS IN THE SEMIS

0
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 6 – Malaysia will feature in the women’s doubles final of the Yonex Swiss Open in Basel, Switzerland on a day when men’s doubles top seeds Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and men’s singles second seed Lee Zii Jia fell in their semifinal matches.
Also making the exit in the last four was the mixed double pair of Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing (No 5 seeds) who also tumbled to French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue in straight games 21-19, 21-10.
However, for Malaysia’s rising young pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah stunned their seniors and No 2 seeds Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, coming back from a game down for a 10-21, 21-14, 21-16 in a 66-minute thriller. This is their first Super 300 final in the world tour event.
Pearly Tan-Thinaah, currently ranked No 30, has been going great guns and made the last eight in the Yonex Thailand Open and the Toyota Thailand Open in January this year.
Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik had a great start against Germans Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel by winning the first game 21-13.
However, the Malaysians lost their bearings in the next two games which they lost 13-21, 16-21. The match lasted 52 minutes.
Zii Jia, ranked No 11, was disappointing in his 18-21, 10-21 defeat to Thailand’s three-time world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn whom he had beaten in his previous two meetings.

WITHOUT FANS IT IS A LONG, LONG JOURNEY FOR THE M-LEAGUE TEAMS

Teams are missing their fans and supporters who are often the driving force behind their success.
KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 6 – When Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) retained the Charity Shield with a 2-0 win over Kedah Darul Aman FC (KDA FC) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru on Friday to kickstart the new Malaysian Football League season the absence of football fans stood out like a sore thumb.
And the glaring absence of the fans in the coming matches will be felt as the season progresses.
It will sorely felt across the country unless the authorities concerned with the Covid-19 pandemic, lift the restrictions on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
For that to happen, we all have a role to play. From football fans and the public in general, let us take the bull by its horns and adhere to the strict SOPs. Adhering to strict SOPs will surely help the cause and bring down the daily positive cases.
Teams are missing their fans and supporters who are often the driving force behind their success – and the fans are missing their favorite teams.
More importantly, the stadium stands have become ”dull” without the rivalry of the fans.
JDT’s long-serving Mexican coach Benjamin Mora hailed his team’s win in the Charity Shield match which also gave the Southern Tigers three points in the Super League. JDT is a seven-time Malaysian Super League champion since 2014.
”This is not the best from JDT and also Kedah. It is going to be a long, long journey for the teams in the league. The short pre-season preparations for the teams showed…we were not 100 percent and so was Kedah,” said Mora.
Still, Kedah’s Singaporean coach Aidil Shahrin Sahak was quick to admit defeat saying “JDT was the better team” on the night.
“We will move on from here. There were loopholes and work on plugging that,” said Aidil who was paraded an all-local backline.
“We take one match at a time and hope to be competitive in the coming matches for positive results. Some of the players who missed the Charity Shield match will be returning…and this gives us hope.”
For the record, it was JDT’s fourth successive Charity Shield title.

ZII JIA IN YONEX SWISS OPEN SEMI-FINALS

KUALA LUMPUR, Mc 5 – Mixed doubles top seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying are out of the Yonex Swiss Open after a shock defeat in the quarter-finals to Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje in three games 14-21, 21-19, 21-15 on Friday.
Also biting the dust in Basel were fellow professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie who also went out in similar fashion – losing in three games after winning the first 21-14 but lost the next two 21-14, 21-19 in an hour-long match against Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France.
However, fifth-seeded Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing lifted the gloom to advance to the semi-finals after knocking out India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa 21-17, 16-21, 21-18 in a 70-minute thriller.
Kian Meng-Pei Jing will (pic below) get the chance to exact revenge on Thom-Delphine when they meet each other in Saturday’s semi-finals in the Super 300 event that offers USD140,000 in prize money in the Olympics qualifier.
In the men’s singles Malaysian No 1 Lee Zii Jia, seeded second, stayed on course when he gunned down India’s B. Sai Praneeth. The Malaysian defeated the fifth-seeded Praneeth 21-14, 21-17 in 45 minutes.
For a place in Sunday’s final Zii Jia will next meet Thailand’s three-time world junior champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn who ousted another India Ajay Jayaram 21-9, 21-6.
