MALAYSIA CUP: SELANGOR THROWN INTO RED ZONE

0
PETALING JAYA, 1 Nov – Thirty-three time champions Selangor, are not only aiming for their 34th Malaysia Cup title but it is also their last hope to play in the AFC Cup next season.
The Malaysia Cup champions will play in the Asian championships.
The Klang Valley outfit was handed a first-round match against Melaka United – a tough call against Zainal Abidin Hassan’s team.
There is no reprieve for the Red Giants even if they clear the Melaka hurdle.
A win over Melaka will earn Selangor a place in the quarter-finals but it is another tough hurdle – facing five-time champions Kedah or four-time champions Pahang.
Kedah finished runners-up to Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) in the Super League.
For Selangor’s caretaker German coach Michael Feichtenbeiner it will be his first real test since taking over the hot-seat from B. Satiananthan who was removed after Selangor’s 6-1 defeat to JDT in a league match.
Defending champions JDT who also won the Malaysia Cup in 2017 were handed a first-round match against newcomers Kuching FA depth but it is left to be seen if the Southern Tigers, with enough depth on the bench, will be at full strength as they have a date to keep in the AFC Champions League (East Zone) in Doha, Qatar around the same period.
The winner of the JDT-Kuching FA match will face Kuala Lumpur for a place in the quarter-finals. The City Boys became the beneficiaries of Sabah’s premature exit from the Malaysia Cup after the East Malaysian team was not given the greenlight by the National Security Council due to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) due to the pandemic.
Kuala Lumpur earned a free ride into the quarter-finals after getting a bye in the first round.
Eight time champions Perak has a tricky first round encounter against surprise package Kelantan United. Newly crowned Premier League champions Penang will face beleaguered Felda United who will see no action in the M-League next season.
The Malaysia Cup first round matches will be from Nov 6-8 followed by the quarter-final matches on Nov 12-13. The semi-finals are scheduled on Nov 17 and the final on Nov 22.

PETALING JAYA, 30 Oct – It is just the beginning of a long battle after Pahang slapped a two year ban on naturalized Malaysian, Mohamadou Sumareh earlier this week for gross indiscipline that has also dragged in the FA of Malaysia and FIFA.
The Gambian-born Sumareh has been in the limelight in the football fraternity after securing his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) to play for Thai club, Police Tero FC in the Thai Football League.
The Pahang FA disciplinary board which met on Tuesday, found the international guilty of four charges and slapped him with a two year ban from all football activities in the country.
However, nothing has been mentioned if it also involves Sumareh’s international career with Harimau Malaya.
Among the charges filed against Sumareh by the Pahang FA is failing to show up for Pahang’s training from Aug 3-28.
He also failed to turn up for Pahang’s home match in the Super League against Johor Darul Takzim at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan on Aug 28.
The national striker was also charged for breaching Article 6.6 of his contract by referring directly to FIFA and not to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) on his grouses over the late payment of salaries.
Sumareh has been playing for Pahang since 2017. The East Coast state had played a key role for the player to obtain his Malaysian citizenship which saw him win a place in the national squad under chief coach, Tan Cheng Hoe.
The ban by Pahang came as a shock to Sumareh who said he is ”sick and tired” with the latest developments in the matter and wants to be ”left in peace” to concentrate on his football career.
“I am not feeling good and beg for the matter to be put at rest.”
Meanwhile, Cheng Hoe is left perplexed with the turn of events but has left the matter to be settled by FAM.
“For now let us wait and see what going to happen next,” said Cheng Hoe from Penang.

SABAH DEALT A CRUEL MALAYSIA CUP BLOW

0
PETALING JAYA, 29 Oct – It is not the way to go out but Sabah will not take part in this year’s Malaysia Cup after the National Security Council (NSC) failed to give the team the clearance to leave the state due to Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) which has been extended to Nov 9.
It is all the more hurting for the East Malaysia when it was revealed by Malaysian Football League (MFL) chief executive officer, Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan that Sabah’s postponed Super League match against UiTM FC scheduled to be held at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Saturday will not take place.
Instead, UiTM FC has been awarded the match with a 3-0 win and three points which moved them up go sixth place with 17 points in the 12-team league while Sabah ended up in 10th position with nine points.
There were more to come when Sabah to feature in this Sunday’s Malaysia Cup draw and the team drawn against the East Malaysian side will be awarded a berth in the quarter-finals with a 3-0.
This is year’s Malaysia Cup will be played on a new format on a knockout basis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is certainly a cruel blow to Sabah football as the team was looking forward playing in the prestigious and oldest football competition in this region.
While Sabah is feeling the Covid-19 heat, teams from the Klang Valley – Selangor, Petaling Jaya City FC, UiTM and Kuala Lumpur – will be feature in the Malaysia Cup although Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are also under CMCO.
According to Ghani these teams will play their matches in Green Zones which will be decided with the help of MFL.
Pasukan-pasukan yang layak ke Piala Malaysia 2020:
JDT, Selangor, Felda United, Pahang, Kedah, UiTM FC, Sabah, Kelantan, Perak, Melaka United, Pulau Pinang, Kuching FA, Terengganu FC, PJ City FC, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan United.

FOOTBALL GETS MESSIER IN ‘UNGRATEFUL’ SELANGOR

0
PETALING JAYA, 24 Oct – Just what is brewing in the Selangor football camp these days and who is calling the shots as things seem to get messier – leaving big question marks.
The latest news shocks all. The Selangor FA (FAS) has kicked out five players – three seniors (Nick Swirad, Farizal Harun, Khyril Muhymeen Zamri (pic)) and two youngsters, Anwar Ibrahim, Zahril Azri Zabri) from the team’s training while still on its payroll as they are still under contract has left a bad taste.
Why are the players being punished in such a manner?
Is it because of the ”hidden hands” who had a big say in the removal of chief coach B. Satiananthan to carry out their agenda? These hidden hands are still there calling the shots for their own agenda.
Everyone knows that there is big money in football. It is like the sickening political scenes in countries where the people are at the mercy of the political goons who want the power to swell their bank accounts. Football is no different.
Michael Feichtenbeiner, the German caretaker coach of the Red Giants after Satiananthan was sacked is tight-lipped on the five players.
Feichtenbeiner, who is also the technical director of the FAS, has been praising the Red Giants for the big wins against relegated teams Police and Felda which pushed Selangor to mid-table in the final league standings after he was named the replacement for Satiananthan.
Feichtenbeiner believes that his brand of football brought a change in the Selangor team. He also believes that promoting five players from Selangor’s feeder team that plies its trade in the lower-tier Premier League will give the senior team that much needed boost in the Malaysia Cup.
The five new ‘seniors’ in the team are Bajram Nebija, Quentin Chen, Danial Asri, Aqil Fadhly, and Shahrul Nazeem.
It is now left to be seen if the German “brew” will do wonders to the Klang Valley outfit in the coming Malaysia Cup which is scheduled to begin next month with the first-round matches to be played from Nov 6-8. Selangor has won the Malaysia Cup a record 33 times.
Interestingly, Feichtenbeiner was also the head coach of Selangor 2 – a team that did not finish in the top bracket in the Premier League. Selangor 2 finished seventh in the league – winning four, drawing one, and losing six of their 11 matches.

PERAK WANTS AFC CUP BERTH VIA THE MALAYSIA CUP

0
PETALING JAYA, 23 Oct – Wounded Perak has not given up hopes of playing in next season’s AFC Cup but it takes a mammoth task on a winding journey to fulfill that hope – to win the prestigious Malaysia Cup.
The Bos Gauros last won the silverware in 2018 but could well play a role in this if the team gets a perfect draw as this year’s Malaysia Cup which will be played in a new format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The country’s oldest football tournament will be played on a knockout basis with the first round matches for the 16 teams scheduled from Nov 6-8.
The quarter-finals will be from Nov 12-13 followed by the semi-finals on Nov 17. The final is slated for Nov 22.
Perak had heartbreak in their final Super League match which was against Kedah at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Oct 11.
The Bos Gauros lost 3-2 in a match which they needed to win while Kedah needed just a draw for second place in the league which came with a place in the AFC Cup.
Perak coach, Mehmet Durakovic is counting on his fired-up team after the league disappointment to go for the ”kill” in the Malaysia Cup.
However, in the same breath, the Australian is aware of the tough task the team has.
“It won’t be easy…this is the Malaysia Cup and it will be played in a different format. That (format) makes it all the more difficult. At the same time, there is something at stake for us to fight for (the Cup which comes with the AFC Cup slot,” said Durakovic.
”The team is training hard and we will do whatever is needed to do to take the opportunity we have to play in the Asian meet.”

AIDIL SHARIN STAYS WITH KEDAH

0
PETALING JAYA, 22 Oct – Singaporean coach, Aidil Sharin Sahak has verbally accepted a new two year contract with Kedah which is expected to be signed soon after his existing contract expires at the end of this year.
Without doubt, the passport for a new contract came via Kedah’s place in the AFC Cup next season after he guided the Red Eagles as runners up in the Super League which was won by Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) for an unprecedented seventh year running.
Kedah beat Perak 3-2 in their last league match which was played at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh – a win which they needed although a draw would have been enough for Aidil and company.
Knowing that continuity is needed to carry Kedah in their challenge in the AFC Cup and also in the new M-League season, the Kedah management has verbally agreed to further improve the team – with about 90 percent of the players expected to be retained.
However, this will be decided when next month during the Malaysia Cup campaign but for sure Kedah players, both local and foreign, will be in demand for the new season after the Red Eagles came through a turbulent five months when the team was not paid the salaries.
It was ”smooth sailing” for the Red Eagles since the change of management with new supremo Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (who is also the Menteri Besar), settling a close to RM15 million in debts.
Despite the off the field issues, Kedah players were lauded for showing their professionalism on the field and did not let the team down.
Aidil has repeatedly said he loves the players and the Kedah fans which has a strong base although he was linked to Perak and later Selangor.
There were reportedly also several other offers from teams in the country and also overseas.

BWF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 CANCELLED

0

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 Oct – Organisers of the BARFOOT & THOMPSON BWF World Junior Championships 2020 have today confirmed that the event has been cancelled.

The ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and uncertainty left BWF, Badminton New Zealand and
tournament organisers no choice but to cancel the event.

BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund in a statement today said: “We are of course disappointed not to be able to stage the 2020 version of the BWF World Junior Championships, but the entry restrictions in place and complexities related to the Covid-19 situation makes it impossible for the event to be planned and therefore hosted in New Zealand in January 2021 as currently scheduled.”

With a host for the next edition already in place for later in 2021, and the uncertainty of the Covid-19 situation expected to stretch into next year, postponement was not an option.

However, Badminton New Zealand are still committed to hosting the BWF World Junior
Championships and the BWF have accepted a proposal for them to stage the 2024 edition as a replacement for the edition lost.

Hosts for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 championships were already awarded by BWF Council in 2018, making 2024 the next available year.

“We would like to thank Badminton New Zealand, tournament organisers, its partners ATEED and the New Zealand Government, for their enthusiasm and commitment to staging the World Junior Championships,” said Lund.

“It only seems fair recognition of their efforts to stage these championships that we award them the 2024 edition.

“We appreciate that some junior players will turn 19 years old in 2021 and unfortunately miss out on a BWF World Junior Championships experience. We can only encourage them to continue to develop their talent as badminton athletes and start to enter open international events.

“It has been a difficult and extraordinary year during the pandemic but we all look forward to a more consistent junior international badminton calendar in 2021 and the next BWF World Junior Championships in China in October 2021.”

Badminton New Zealand Chief Executive Joe Hitchcock said: “Although we are tremendously disappointed with this news, it is the right decision to make due to the current situation. We know that the world was looking forward to visiting New Zealand and enjoying a truly inspiring event with the best young badminton players on the planet and we feel for all those impacted by this cancellation.

“We are, however, thrilled that fans and players from around the world will still be able to enjoy a uniquely Kiwi badminton experience, albeit a few years later than originally planned. We are particularly grateful to the BWF, Barfoot & Thompson and our event partners, who have been incredibly supportive and accommodating to ensure that we could get across the line to host the 2024 event,” Hitchcock said.

ATEED Head of Major Events, Richard Clarke, said: “Whilst the news is understandably
disappointing for the badminton community and Auckland as a host, we are delighted to hear that the event will not be lost to our region.

“The decision by the international governing body to award the 2024 event to New Zealand speaks volumes for our reputation as a world-class events destination and we cannot wait to extend our hospitality.”

The new date sets up an exciting period of international badminton events in Auckland, New Zealand, with the BARFOOT & THOMPSON BWF World Junior Championships secured for 2024 to be followed by the BARFOOT & THOMPSON BWF World Senior Championships in 2025.
